Wimbledon 2022 results: Nick Kyrgios reaches first Grand Slam ... (Sporting News)

Nick Kyrgios, Australia's combustible star, kept his composure to beat Cristian Garin in straight sets in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

Kyrgios is already muttering at the baseline. Kyrgios gets on the board with two aces and an unreturned serve. The first real baseline rally sees Garin go too long off the forehand. He's angry at missing a second-serve return at 0-30, though, and Garin digs out some big serves at the right time. And just like that, Kyrgios takes the first set! Garin is throwing in one too many baseline errors right now, although he's just hit another ripping forehand winner off a Kyrgios first serve. Kyrgios hits his first return winner of the match — a sign of the confidence with which he's playing. A quick-fire hold for Garin is just what he needed. Terrific court coverage from Garin sees him get to a Kyrgios drop volley and hit a winner. Kyrgios took umpire James Keothavong to task in the changeover. Garin is getting a few errors off the Kyrgios racquet now whenever he can keep a baseline exchange going. Garin returns well again and Kyrgios simply scoops a forehand wide.

Nick Kyrgios reaches first ever Wimbledon semi final with straight ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Nick Kyrgios is just one match away from a place in the Wimbledon final after steaming past Cristian Garin in straight sets.

Ultimately, Kyrgios shows enough character to come through that game - one that included his fastest serve of the match so far - and Garin will now serve to stay in the set. "He was the one hitting balls at me, he was the one that hit a spectator, he was the one that smacked it out of the stadium," he said. Kyrgios is a delight to watch when in full flow - a sliced backhand sets up two booming forehands the second of which is a down-the-line winner. Keeping the pace high too, Kyrgios reaches 0-40, and faltering in the face of such pacey consistency, Garin strikes a return which wobbles out to the sidelines. But Kyrgios has power to spare, and his next return is too heavy for Garin to hit back accurately. Garin's serve is too returnable and Kyrgios can send back a return which Garin smothers in the net. His next serve is the longed-for ace, which Garin is able to strike, but straight into the net. Garin gets the advantage after an error from Kyrgios, but Kyrgios brings them back to level with a forehand winner. Garin gets break point after Kyrgios' shot is called out: late, and Kyrgios explodes in the vague direction of his box. Garin gets a helping hand from the netcord on his backhand, as the ball skitters over - Kyrgios can run for it, but doesn't reach it before it droops out of play. Kyrgios gets back on track with another strong serve, forcing Garin to net, but he is able to win the next point to set up 40-30. A glorious forehand from Garin floats past Kyrgios to hand him the first points of the game, before Kyrgios produces two impossible-to-return serves, one an ace on his second serve.

Nick Kyrgios reaches first Wimbledon semi-final with victory over ... (The Independent)

The Australian won 6-4 6-3 7-6 to reach the last four at a major for the first time in his career.

Garin was tasked with mounting another fightback from the jaws of defeat and he refused valiantly to cave in the third set. He maintained his level and repeated that feat just three games into the second set to break again and go 3-1 up, and it became clear this was a different type of Kyrgios performance as he rejected every chance of provocation. When Garin produced a brilliant forehand winner in the next game, Kyrgios did prompt laughter as he repeated: “that’s too good”. In truth, it was he who was playing at a level Garin simply couldn’t match. He broke to love in both of the first two sets, delivered aces when danger reared its head, and retained his composure as a tiebreak threatened to drift away from him in the third. A wonderful forehand passing shot set up two break points at 2-3 and, although Kyrgios descended into one of his unintelligible monologues after wasting the first, Garin erred at the crucial moment to put the match on even footing. There were brief moments when the lava bubbled and Nick Kyrgios’ temper threatened to erupt but, for those craving the Australian’s full repertoire of antics, this was almost an anti-climax.

Nick Kyrgios was dressed in all white and was all business as he defeated Cristian Garin to earn a spot in his first grand slam semifinal.

He has a great chance to win the tournament.” He’s in the semi-finals,” Garin said. Garin reeled off four consecutive points to turn a 1-3 deficit into a 5-3 lead. “But I’ve been advised by my lawyers that I can’t say anything about it at this time.” He didn’t face a single break point in the third set but each time he made inroads on the Kyrgios serve he was met with aces as the set progressed to a tiebreak. “I thought my ship had sailed.

Garin battled hard to extend the third set into a tiebreaker and looked set to drag the match into a fourth set when he led it 5-3 but Kyrgios hit back to win the last four points. It was a generally low-volume Kyrgios, who has been summoned to appear in a Canberra court next month on an alleged assault charge, although he did lambast his sizeable entourage as the match dragged on. In surpassing his previous best Wimbledon run to the quarter-finals eight years ago, Kyrgios becomes the first Australian man to reach a Grand Slam semi-final for 17 years.
