Should he sign for Saints, he would join Gavin Bazunu, Mateusz Lis and Armel Bella-Kotchap in the Southampton squad after their summer arrivals, while 18-year-old Manchester City midfielder Romeo Lavia is also expected to complete a move to the south coast shortly. But now, it is expected that Aribo will leave Ibrox this summer to head to the Premier League, with Saints understood to be confident of sealing a deal to sign him, despite reported interest from Crystal Palace, Fulham and Nottingham Forest. With Aribo in the final year of his deal, Rangers are expected to be reluctant sellers, but there is reported to be a £10million release clause in his contract. Back then, Southampton were among the clubs linked with a move to sign Aribo, who had also reportedly been attracting attention from Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester City after helping Charlton to promotion from League One. But instead of a move to the Premier League, he opted to sign for Rangers, where he has since gone on to make 149 appearances, scoring 26 goals.

Right-back and centre-back were the only ones missing for a player who, at 16, was viewed as a left-sided centre-back. “For a player of his talent, he could and should have scored more goals throughout this period, but when he did score they tended to be quite spectacular.” It’s the least his form and all those special, ridiculous moments, deserve. In no way is that designed to talk the player down. He could and should have dominated more games. He could and should have scored more goals.
