Responding to a clip of his comments that was posted on Twitter, Campbell replied, writing: “Weirdo.” Zahawi said: “The people, by the way, who are egging us on to divide and to turn on one another, are people like Alastair Campbell, and wherever Alastair Campbell is you want to be on the opposite side of the argument, in my view.” Zahawi criticised people who are “egging” the Tory party on to become more divided and used the former spokesman for Prime Minister Tony Blair as an example.

If only voters could have faith that the next Prime Minister will be a person worthy of the trust placed in them. Such is the stench from Mr Johnson’s time as Prime Minister that merely opening a window wide enough to let in another Conservative leader will not do. As for Mr Javid, despite the wave of amnesia doing the rounds, the public has not forgotten that he resigned once before from a Johnson cabinet, in February 2020. Nor did Mr Sunak seem to have the stomach or forbearance for a fight when his wife’s tax arrangements, and his holding of a US green card, became public earlier this year. They got one, for a while, but now the arrangement has gone the way of four day old fish and the rush to get rid is on. A better metaphor for the Conservatives’ relentless self-absorption would be hard to find.

He could have talked about the global economy, the cost of living crisis, future spending plans, and indicated a direction of travel be wished to take. Happily it all led to a sudden spike in traffic to the special episode of The Rest Is Politics that Rory Stewart and I recorded shortly after the Javid/Sunak resignations. Might have to skip PMQs. Just let me know when the lying crook has finally gone, and taken his team of third- and fourth-raters with him. But you’re a grown man and you have a fair bit of experience, and rightly or wrongly, have a reputation in the Tory party for being reasonably competent. But as I emerged from the showers at at the Parliament Hill lido this morning, I quickly realised from the avalanche of calls, emails, texts, tweets and general social media merriment that our new Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi had gone into the interviews with possibly the most bizarre top line message of all time. After all, I have been banging on since before Johnson became Prime Minister about him being the worst person on Earth to be put in such a serious and important job at such a difficult time for the country and the world.
