As doors began to creep open for the British/American pairing, they secured three consecutive games as they entered the second set with a comfortable hold. They were unable to come last year, so it’s nice to play in front of them, and [thanks] to Des for playing with me this year. Pretty impressive considering they only pairing up two weeks ago, hey!

“It will be difficult, maybe Wimbledon sees everyone go and they will open the grounds up and let everyone come in if they’ve got a grounds pass but I guess that will just depend on how long our match will go on.” He later added: “Hopefully we get a nice British crowd to cheer us on and hopefully we do not have too big a gap between the ladies’ semis. “And he’s the defending champion.” “But as long as they come out on top, then I think we are quite happy about that.” Mr Cartner said: “We hope it will be a tight match so it goes on a bit longer, a bit more exciting. “We are terribly excited,” he told the PA news agency.

Skupski and Krawczyk are the first pair for 25 years to win back-to-back mixed titles at SW19.

Asked how he would try to get over the defeat, Salisbury said: “Probably not play tennis for a while, not think about tennis, not watch tennis. Obviously there’s pressure, you’re serving to get into the final. We played some bad points the rest of the match but obviously we played two bad ones on match point. It was very special to do that at Wimbledon. They weren’t able to come last year. “To try to defend the title with someone you won it with the year before is something I wanted to do personally.

Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk take Wimbledon mixed doubles ... (The Guardian)

The first silverware of this year's Wimbledon went to the British-American pairing in the first mixed doubles final to be played on Thursday night.

Spectators were crammed around Court No 14 to try to get a glimpse of two of Britain’s most famous wheelchair players, Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid, with Hewett emerging the winner 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, to move into the semi-finals. I think they go: ‘Right, wheelchair draw is going to be 14 and 17, all round one matches,’ whereas actually I think there needs to be a little more consideration – two Brits, people want to come and watch.” The disappointment was clearly too much to take and the No 14 seeds eased through the final two sets to clinch victory. In part, the move was to try to avoid the half-empty stadiums seen in many years and to give the mixed doubles a unique slot of its own. Even allowing for the fact that the Centre Court crowd was treated to an extra match, including the trick shot king, Mansour Bahrami, a grounds pass ticket, which allows access to everywhere except the show courts, was just £20, one-tenth of the price of a ticket to Centre Court itself. The mixed doubles has always been popular with fans at Wimbledon; for those who play tennis recreationally, it’s the form of the game they probably play the most.

Britain's Neal Skupski and American Desirae Krawcyzk retain the Wimbledon mixed doubles title by beating Matthew Ebden and Sam Stosur.

It led Mektic to take a selfie of his injury to the amusement of the crowd - with opponent Farah even running over to join him and Pavic for a picture in a moment of light relief on Court One. Ram netted a powerful Ebden return to send it to a fourth set, where the Australians built on their momentum and broke in the 10th game to set up a decider. Croat second seeds Mektic and Pavic won 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-0) 4-6 6-2 7-6 (10-4) after four hours and 22 minutes against the sixth seeds to set up a final meeting with Ebden and Purcell. "It's incredible," said Skupski, 32, after claiming his second Grand Slam doubles title. "It's especially nice that my parents are here. Both pairs traded breaks in the second set before an Ebden foot fault contributed to a break to love that proved crucial as Skupski and Krawczyk served the match out.
