Who is Rabbi Matondo? Rangers transfer target brings goals and ... (Scottish Daily Record)

The 21-year-old looks set to become the fourth new face at Ibrox this summer and Record Sport takes a deep dive into the Welsh winger.

But for Matondo, it provided him with a field of dreams that eventually led him to the riches of the Etihad and then the Bundesliga. When he came he had an injury and it took a little bit of time to get over that. “They tried to keep me, but they respected that I knew I was doing what I thought was the right thing for my career. He arrived in the January transfer window and joining a club mid-season isn’t always the easiest. He did play there for Schalke. But he’s a good boy. That saw him swap the Premier League for the Bundesliga in a £10 million move. “Growing up there helped a lot in me becoming who I am today and the way I play. The main critique of the former Liverpool man is his lack of goals. Matondo played just 11 games for Stoke City, scoring one goal in a draw with Nottingham Forest, and it’s fair to say that loan spell away from Schalke didn’t quite go to play for the Welsh international. Not least the loan spell that came after Stoke City last season at Belgian side Cercle Brugge where he proved a huge success under Austrian Dominik Thalhammer and they wanted to trigger a buy-out clause but couldn’t agree terms with the player. French Ligue 1 sides Lorient and Troyes were both interested but Giovanni van Bronckhorst looks like getting the youngster for a fee of around £1.8 million. He’s good but can he do it on a cold, wet Wednesday night in Stoke? No, or any other night for that matter.

Sunderland vs Rangers LIVE (ChronicleLive)

Alex Neil's side get their pre-season campaign under way againt Scottish giant Glasgow Rangers.

Clarke returned to Spurs at the end of the season but Sunderland retained an interest in him and in recent weeks have been talking to the Londoners about a deal. I'd love the chance to play in the Championship; it's a big step up but I'm definitely ready for it." You need to perform all the time, and if you do that you'll be fine. Sunderland secured promotion to the Championship via the play-offs at Wembley in late May meaning the players had just four-and-a-half weeks off over the summer, however Wright had an even shorter break. Bailey Wright is the only likely absentee when Sunderland take on Rangers in the first friendly of their Portugal trip. The floodlights have gone off here.

Rangers vs Sunderland - LIVE updates (Scottish Daily Record)

The Gers take on the Black Cats in the Algarve as they get their pre-season schedule underway.

It's also a chance for the transfer decision makers in Govan to get an up close look at Ross Stewart. Rangers have been heavily linked with the Scotland international, but Colak's arrival means that may be less of a priority now. Scott Arfield, Steven Davis all signed on for another year as well and will get some minutes in the legs. Connor Goldson looked for all the world like he was moving on to pastures new this summer, but Gers fans will be delighted to see him continue in defence after penning a new four-year contract. There could be Rangers debuts for the two new recruits as the transfer business heats up down Ibrox way. It may only be a friendly but the big Croatian will be desperate to get off the mark in the Algarve tonight. Aribo said it was a "dream" to wear the royal blue, but counldn't turn down the riches and profile of the English Premier League. Today's friendly may come to soon after a hectic couple of days, but fans will want to see what the new man can do as soon as possible. Roberts went for the top corner, but McLaughlin watched it all the way and was able to spring to his right and claw the ball away from the top corner and behind to safety. A ball played down the line is well held up by the Rangers number nine, who holds off his man and manages to win a corner after holding off his man with ease. It's a poor goal to concede from the Gers' point of view and Connor Goldson will be asking questions of himself and fellow defenders. That's it for the first 45 minutes and to be kind, we'll descrbe it as typical pre-season fare. Antonio Colak joined up with his new teammates after completing his switch from PAOK and makes his first appearance for the club from the start.

The clubs are yet to confirm Aribo's transfer but he had agreed a move to the English Premier League side, as Football Scotland exclusively revealed earlier this week. He has been heavily linked with a move to Rangers over the summer but has also been in talks with Sunderland over a new deal. It's a first official pre-season fixture of the summer for Rangers and they'll want to get off to a good start. Sunderland and Alex Neil will be hoping to continue the form that saw them promoted back to the Championship last season and it should be a decent match. Jon McLaughlin will be very frustrated with that. It's a debut for Antonio Colak as Rangers fans get to see him in action for the first time. The Nigeria international will join Southampton for a fee of £6million with add-ons set to take that to £10m in a move that is viewed as a bargain for the English side with Aribo in the final year of his contract. Sunderland countered well and Stewart laid it back to Roberts who took a touch and curled it towards the top corner but it's touched wide and out for a corner. The Rangers keeper is the first man to be tested and it was a very good save. Rangers fans had hoped for him to get a chance in the first team as starting keeper but he'll need to improve on that. Not the best of nights so far from Rangers and you'd expect a lot of changes in the second period. It could be a first chance for Rangers fans to see new boys John Souttar, Antonio Colak and Tom Lawrence in action if they are selected by van Bronckhorst. The latter two players joined up with the squad late this week so might not be in from the start but it would be a surprise to see them get some game time.

RANGERS saw their pre-season trip to Portugal end in darkness after their friendly fixture with Sunderland with postponed at half-time.

Van Bronckhorst confirmed on Friday that he was keen to add more firepower to his side ahead of the new Premiership campaign and crack at the Champions League this term. Rangers: Van Bronckhorst now facing 'big blow' at Ibrox (GiveMeSport)

Rangers' potential sale of Nigeria midfielder Joe Aribo to Southampton would be a “big blow” for the club, according to Pete O'Rourke.

Overall, Aribo’s departure will leave a big gap in Rangers’ midfield, and van Bronckhorst and his staff will have to work hard to find the right player to replace the Nigeria international. And an average SofaScore rating of 7.07 for his performances in the Premiership last season suggest that he has been a consistently excellent performer for the Glasgow club, though it seems like the time for a step-up to one of Europe’s strongest leagues. Rangers’ sale of Joe Aribo to Southampton is a “big blow” to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side this summer, according to Pete O’Rourke.

Antonio Colak right age for Rangers peak in Morelos partnership ... (Scottish Daily Record)

Miller sees parallels between Colak's arrival and his second Ibrox stint when he was in his prime.

More firepower was required and, through Ross Wilson and the recruitment team’s work in recent years, I trust them that they’ve landed the right man. If he’s fit and firing, coming off quite a serious injury, then he could have a big part to play in them. It was 17 in 36 appearances last season, 18 in 36 the year before. In laymen's terms, Boydy was the scorer and I was the worker or linker. Can Rangers come to an agreement with Alfredo to get him signed for longer, allowing them to demand a higher fee at some point? I probably went on to play a lot of my best football for Rangers at that time, although I’d had a right good spell at Wolves a few years earlier. At 28, I felt comfortable with the player I was and pretty clear on the role. It was unfortunate Nikica got a bad injury in October that season because we formed a really productive partnership. Then when Nikica Jelavic arrived in 2010, either of us could do pretty much any part of the job. But, for the moment, we don’t know if Colak’s arrival is as a replacement for Alfredo or to work with him. Sure, he’s been on a lot of loans from Hoffenheim back in Germany, struggled for goals in Greece. The Ibrox hierarchy clearly felt this guy was more than capable of carrying the weight of that jersey.

The Ibrox starlet earned rave reviews last season and after extending his deal, Kenny Dalglish believes he will be targeting a top team place.

“Nathan Patterson will hope to put his injuries behind him and follow suit at Everton after leaving Rangers in the previous window for a substantial fee. Jurgen Klopp has shown that if you have the talent, then a pathway to the first team will be provided. On the exodus of top talent, Liverpool legend Dalglish said: “Looking at the quality of youngsters coming through in Scotland right now, I think our game is in a good place. He showed on a few occasions last season that he is talented and has a good mentality. Writing in his Sunday Post column, Dalglish said: “Alex Lowry decided to extend his deal with Rangers, and right now he is in Portugal, with a chance to show Giovanni van Bronckhorst that he is ready to step up and play regular first-team football. Lowry’s former Rangers team-mate Rory Wilson joined Aston Villa at just 16-years-old with Calvin Ramsay leaving Aberdeen for English giants Liverpool and Lewis Ferguson and Josh Doig on the verge of moves to Italy where Aaron Hickey had a spell before joining Brentford, having left Hearts for Bologna.
