34-year-old fast bowler gave away just one boundary and dismissed Rohit, Kohli, Pant.

In the short term, he has done enough to merit opportunities against South Africa in the T20Is at the end of this month. He had to ask his employers, Myerscough College in Preston, for permission to play in this series; his BTEC students will give him a hero's welcome when he returns to work next week. Eight balls, three wickets - and three of the biggest in international cricket, in terms of reputation. Gleeson's selection was primarily intended to address that issue, after he nailed his yorkers for Lancashire in the T20 Blast this year. His second ball disappeared over midwicket for four, but it was the only boundary that he conceded across his four overs. On Saturday at Edgbaston, he dismissed all three of them in the space of four balls.

"Gleeson is a Lancashire boy, but was not picked up by the county. Broad added: "It would be great to see Gleeson on a different type of pitch. "He bowled a heavy length, used his bouncer, bowled the wobble seam and the cross seam. The left-hander inside edging one through to the keeper when looking for a big swing to leg. "(The recovery) was a long, slow process. He stuck to what worked for him, getting the biggest India wickets and causing the batters issues. He came on at a very difficult time, under pressure, and he did fantastically well. "I just want to keep playing cricket and enjoying it, playing for as long as I can. He stuck to a plan and delivered. When asked whether the T20 World Cup was on his radar, Gleeson said: "You want to play in the big occasions, don't you? I cannot think of a weak ball he bowled. England Test paceman Stuart Broad added of Gleeson: "It was incredible.

5 talking points as Richard Gleeson shines despite England ... (Mirror.co.uk)

England were beaten by 49 runs in the second T20I against India at Edgbaston, falling to a series defeat.

He continued to have success in the second T20, picking up 4-27 while bowling largely back of a length. After returning from a career-threatening back injury, he picked up 23 wickets at 16.34 in the T20 Blast this year and earned an England call-up, promptly delivering at Edgbaston with 3-15 from his four overs. Once dubbed a "bits and pieces" cricketer by Sanjay Manjrekar, Jadeja is crucial to this Indian side as a genuine all-rounder, particularly given the concerns over Pandya's fitness. However, when you bowl predominantly at the death like Jordan does, you are bound to get punished a few times and he has bounced back impressively this series. It has been a long journey to the top for Gleeson, who became England's 95th T20 player at the age of 34, having not made his professional debut until he was 27. "You have to make use of the six overs when the fielders are outside and there is an approach we want to take," Rohit said.

Gleeson stars on his England debut after his surprise call-up by Matthew Mott to face India.

Brook struggled again, making just eight, but he was far from the only one as England were made to pay for allowing India to rebuild to 170-8 having been 89-5. Indeed, only last summer he was considering retiring altogether due to back problems. Only since his return to Lancashire has that stance been re-considered.

Richard Gleeson enjoys dream debut with wickets of Rohit Sharma ... (Daily Mail)

Gleeson removed captain Rohit Sharma in his first over before snaring Virat Kohli and the dangerous Rishabh Pant in consecutive balls.

It was a rare example of English success on another poor day for the England Twenty20 team. Retirement was talked about as a possibility. But the chasm between two teams with aspirations of becoming world champions this autumn was huge. Sharma showed no such generosity when the roles were reversed, however, and accepted the slip catch created by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Virat Kohli took the catch to dismiss debutant Richard Gleeson to leave India on the brink of victory The game was in the balance at the halfway stage after new boy Richard Gleeson struck three times in his opening spell to help limit India to 170 for eight.

The 34-year-old dismissed ley India trio Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant in claiming figures of three for 15.

From 49 without loss India had slipped to 61 for three, thanks to Gleeson, who not long ago was contemplating retirement after a stress fracture in his back. The expectation was Kohli would partner his successor as India captain but it was Pant who came out with the skipper, a sign of the tourists’ commitment to attacking the first six overs. But it was the inclusion of Gleeson – who replaced Tymal Mills, with David Willey coming in for Reece Topley – who made the biggest splash on a balmy Saturday afternoon after Rohit and Pant’s fast start.

Moeen cleared the leg-side boundary off both Jadeja and Pandya, who had instant revenge when the batter mishit to mid-off. Richard Gleeson: Playing for England wasn't on my radar (The Cricketer)

Gleeson, who at 34 years and 219 days became the third oldest debutant for England in T20I cricket at Edgbaston on Saturday, impressed with 3 for 15 in four ...

I had a job, I had a career that was all lined up and this was just an opportunity to see what happened. Why not aim for the T20 World Cup. I just want to play in the big occasions. I just wanted to try and play the highest standard that I could. "I'll be out of contract 10 days after the T20 Blast," he said. So each time I reach that next level, I then want to reach the level higher than that. "After that, I got a job with Lancs Cricket Board coaching on the Chance To Shine programme. Then James Middlebrook [who had just finished playing for Northants] - who was playing for Bedfordshire; I was playing for Cumberland - picked me up and says, I think you've got something I'll put you in touch with Northants. It went from that. I was just focused on trying to get back playing for Lancashire and playing cricket again. Playing for England just wasn't on my radar. "I did some landscape gardening whilst I was playing in Australia after I finished university and then I got a factory job for six months just to tide me over," Gleeson says. "And not in 2016, either. And I thought well, maybe if there are a couple of injuries.

England collapse to series defeat vs India despite Richard ... (Mirror.co.uk)

England have once again been comfortably beaten by India as they collapsed to a 49-run defeat following Richard Gleeson's magnificent 3-15 on debut.

Moeen Ali did his best to try and give his side a chance but when he was caught for 35 off Hardik Pandya, England's hopes disappeared with him. Harry Brook, once again preferred over Phil Salt to fill the vacancy left by Eoin Morgan's international retirement, managed just eight off nine balls and holed out off leg-spinner Chahal. After Ravindra Jadeja's crucial unbeaten 46 propelled India to 170-8, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal helped the visitors bowl England out for just 121.
