This additional one-off payment will go to the pensioner households across the UK who receive the Winter Fuel Payment and will be paid on top of any other one-off support a pensioner household is entitled to, for example where they are on pension credit or receive disability benefits. Information seems to be updating on the Government cost of living payment page sporadically. These payments will be exempt from tax, will not count towards the benefit cap, and will not have any impact on existing benefit awards. The first payments will be made between 14 July and the end of the month. For the July payment, you will need to have been qualified for one of those benefits on May 25, 2022. When he was Chancellor, Rishi Sunak said that all households will get a £400 payment to help offset the soaring price of energy bills.

Money is provided on a discretionary basis, meaning councils have the power to decide who gets it and how. The DWP is using a computer programme to identify those people who qualify for the payment. For the July payment, you will need to have been qualified for one of those benefits on May 25, 2022. This package of benefits means any low-income household could get up to £1,500 in help from the government.
