I can be trusted to deliver.” Ms Truss said the Tories can win the next election, but acknowledged it will be “an uphill battle”. Writing in The Telegraph, she said: “Under my leadership, I would start cutting taxes from day one to take immediate action to help people deal with the cost of living. She said she would “keep corporation tax competitive” – hinting that she wants to look again at Mr Sunak’s plans to hike the rate in April 2023, but did not go so far as to match some of her fellow contenders’ pledges to scrap the rise entirely. “It is built on a clear and longstanding Conservative philosophy, including bold supply-side reform,” she added. As the race for leader heats up, more Tories have declared their allegiances. The levy was introduced to raise funds for the NHS and social care, but has proved controversial at a time when households are feeling the squeeze from soaring food and energy bills.

'The long way out of this, the better way, is to turbo growth. Mr Cummings has issued a string of attacks on Tory leadership contenders via social media in recent days, particularly Ms Truss – widely seen as Mr Sunak's main rival for the Tory crown. She suggested that the £2trillion debt mountain should be put on a 'longer-term' footing in order to give immediate wriggle-room. This could be a completely clean and fair fight about Conservative values. Mr Shapps said he wants to rebuild the economy so it is the biggest in Europe by 2050, and address the cost-of-living crisis. I can be trusted to deliver.' Mr Javid said his plan for the economy would cover both short-term measures - including a new package of support worth up to £5 billion to help with energy bills - and a 'longer-term' vision for tax reform. well, not working class. Mr Hunt also attempted to differentiate himself from the crowded field with a pitch based on his decision to stay on the backbench while Boris Johnson was at the helm of the Government. And there have been claims that allies of Mr Johnson are aiming to stop Mr Sunak winning the Tory leadership contest over his 'treachery' in resigning from Government on Tuesday night - a move that precipitated the PM's downfall. At this point the new leader will be able to command a majority in the House of Commons - and the Queen will invite them to take over as PM. This pair are then expected to go head to head in a national vote of the Tory membership.

He told The sun: “A 10p cut to fuel duty is one of the quickest ways I’ll help with the cost of living but I’ll also deliver long-term tax cuts to ensure people have more money in their pocket.” The foreign secretary said she would “get the private sector growing faster than the public sector, with a long-term plan to bring down the size of the state and the tax burden”. Jeremy Hunt, who has been both health and foreign secretary, expressed a desire to “cut all taxes” in an interview with BBC Breakfast. “I think there’s a risk in a leadership contest of announcing tens of billions of pounds of unfunded tax cuts, much as though we would like to see those,” he told Times Radio. He conceded “there need to be spending reductions” to fund tax cuts, but refused to say which services would be hit. “And announcing fantasy tax cuts to help get through a leadership election, I think, is unwise.”

Speaking to Kay Burley on Sky News, Mr Prystaiko said: "I have to say that he was very popular. That once again is not confirmed yet, but I suspect that will be the case. When inflation is that high, you don’t normally want to be putting significant additional amounts of money into the economy. Ms Truss told the Telegraph: “It isn’t right to be putting up taxes now. "As foreign secretary, he was in Ukraine a couple of times, he knew the nation, he understood the gravity of the situation and he managed to accumulate on it, to get together with this effort and bring Ukraine what we needed at the time the most." "That means that we'll hold a succession of ballots over the next few days in order to get to that position."

Liz Truss: Heir to Thatcher bidding to lead Britain out of crisis (Gulf News)

She revealed more of her cultural beliefs in a 2020 speech in which she called for “a new approach to equality ... founded firmly on Conservative values” and took aim at the cultural influence of “post-modern philosophy”. “I am a low-tax Conservative”, she told the Telegraph in May. “The way we’re going to weather the storm is through economic growth, through growing the economy,” she noted of the country’s current economic woes. She was environment minister from 2014 to 2016, where she was mocked for a speech in which she vaunted British cheese, saying it was a “disgrace” how much the country imported. Truss twice failed in bids to become an MP before finally succeeding in 2010, when she was elected as representative for the east England constituency of South West Norfolk, four years after being voted in as a local councillor in southeast London. She was promoted to government in 2012, becoming a minister in the education department, and has since held a series of portfolios. She has described herself as a “disruptor-in-chief” who is “not afraid to speak her mind and believes liberating people to start and grow businesses without burdensome red tape is the key to our economic future”. Only the second woman to be foreign secretary, she has appeared to channel Thatcher since assuming the role last September - despite insisting to the Daily Telegraph recently that she is her “own person” and “not trying to emulate anybody”.

In response, Ms Truss said: "I think it's fair to say that when I was in my youth I was a professional controversialist and I liked exploring ideas and stirring things up." It will seek to trust markets once again, to keep spending and taxes low and get the debt down. Her instincts are practical but unmistakably centre-right – and will be a healthy and welcome reversion to traditional conservatism in that area after some of the blind alleys of the Johnson era. It will seek to move forward from Brexit – not always looking back, for good or ill. It will favour social mobility and the grounded education people need to achieve it. As international trade secretary, she embraced the opportunities of Brexit with an enthusiasm no other politician that supported Remain in the referendum has come close to matching.
