West Ham second half player ratings: Harrison Ashby stars in ... (Football.London)

How West Ham's players rated in the second half of their pre-season friendly against League One side Ipswich Town on Tuesday night at Portman Road during ...

Armstrong Okoflex showed more attacking intent and played with more confidence in the second half, having perhaps lacked a bit of end product before the break. Spanish playmaker Pablo Fornals struggled to make an impact in the second half after some early promise, with one or two of his passes going stray. One of the quieter performers in the first half, Chesters came out of the traps in the second half and doubled David Moyes' side's lead just after the hour mark in bizarre circumstances. He first played Michail Antonio through on goal with a delicious through ball down the right wing where the Jamaican international really should have done better in front of goal before his well-struck long shot minutes later led to Chester giving West Ham a 2-0 lead. A solid first half from Harrison Ashby led to an excellent display after the break. Polish stopper Lukasz Fabianski had a quiet first half and largely had just regulation saves to make, will have been disappointed to concede to one of Ipswich's only threatening chances of the second half.

There was still time for 17-year-old midfielder George Earthy to be sent on for a late debut in place of Armstrong Okoflex and Fabiański to hold a looping late header from Kayden Jackson as West Ham saw out the final few minutes to score a welcome warm-up win. Into the second half and the two teams traded half-chances in a lively opening, with Pablo Fornals and Aji Alese shooting wide for West Ham and Lee Evans firing high for Ipswich. Ipswich will have designs on reaching the Championship themselves this coming season, but West Ham have bigger ambitions and, with that in mind, Moyes split his squad in half to get maximum miles into their legs, with a second group going to National League Boreham Wood on the same night.

The Blues made their seven remaining outfield changes, leaving Walton as the only remaining starter. Downes, who had been going quietly about his business, was robbed on the edge of the Ipswich box, with Sam Morsy claiming possession and threading Ladapo through superbly. They were joined by George Edmundson, Lee Evans and Kayden Jackson, who returned to action for the first time after recovering from injuries which ended their 2021/22 campaigns.

But the home side found themselves further behind just after the hour. Kurt Zouma followed up to score after Town stopper, Christian Walton had saved his initial goalbound header. However, Ajibola Alese forced the Town frontman to rush his effort, which beat Lukasz Fabianski but hit the outside of the post.

Town Continue Pre-Season at Home to Hammers - Ipswich Town ... (TWTD.co.uk)

Town continue their pre-season friendly programme against Premier League West Ham United at Portman Road this evening (KO 7pm).

The Hammers were last at Portman Road in pre-season ahead of 2020/21 when they comfortably beat the Blues 4-1 and before that they visited Suffolk in 2018 when they won 2-1. The Hammers’ side at Portman Road could include two former Blues, ex-full-back Aaron Cresswell, who moved to the East Londoners from Town in the summer of 2014, and midfielder Flynn Downes, who signed from Swansea last week. The game is the Blues’ third fixture of pre-season following the 7-0 thrashing of Needham Market at Bloomfields at the end of last month and the 5-1 loss to a strong Arsenal side behind closed doors at London Colney just over a week ago.

Ipswich Town 0-1 West Ham United - Half-Time - Ipswich Town News (TWTD.co.uk)

Kurt Zouma's 31st-minute goal has given West Ham United a 1-0 first-half lead over the Blues in this evening's friendly at Portman Road.

After a poor Downes touch on the edge of the Town box, Morsy dispossessed him and sent Ladapo away on goal in the clear from halfway. It didn’t take too long for the Hammers to take the lead following the restart. Following a 31st-minute corner, Antonio crossed from the left to Kurt Zouma, who had lost his marker. Neither side threatened again before the half-time whistle. The Blues did have spells on the ball, however, with Aluko showing his cleverness in possession, while Ball showed what he’ll add to the Town side, putting a foot in when required, keeping it simple and having a presence in the middle of the park. Christian Walton was in goal.

West Ham United will take on League One side Ipswich Town at Portman Road in one of two friendlies that David Moyes' side are taking part in on Tuesday ...

Zouma on the right and Alese on the left of the two centre-backs. A first involvement from the ex-Ipswich man. West Ham break on the counter, Fronals part of it at first. Took time on the shot and found the post with Alese getting back and doing just enough to put him off. A good passing move and it came out to Ashby, who crashed an effort off the post. West Ham lead 1-0 at the break in a fairly tight first half, Ipswich arguably better. Ipswich arguably the better team, but Zouma's goal the difference so far. Pablo Fornals with plenty of energy and is chasing onto loose Ipswich passes and trying to make things happen. A low effort but he turned it wide. A quick drinks break follows. The defender outjumped Cresswell to head past Fabianski. A crazy goal to digest but it's Daniel Chesters who turns it in.
