As the bright blue Thomson aircraft soared into the skies above Finningley in April 2005, it was heralded as a bright new future, not only for Doncaster but for much of northern England with the then town being linked up to holiday hotspots around the globe.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport: Latest blow for owner Peel after ... (Doncaster Free Press)

The announcement by operator Peel that is potentially considering closing Doncaster Sheffield Airport will have come as a huge shock to many.

Subsequently, the airport became a wholly owned subsidiary of Peel Holdings. In 1990 the airport was privatised, with British Aerospace taking a 76% shareholding in the new company. Originally called Speke Airport, the airport was operated by the RAF and known as RAF Speke at the outset of World War II. However, in 2002 the airport sought a strategic partner to assist with future development and Peel Airports Ltd was selected as the preferred company, taking a 75% stake in the airport, to be increased to 89% after 10 years, with a commitment to invest £20m over the first five years. Situated in the Tinsley area and just off the Parkway leading into Sheffield, the airport opened in a blaze of glory and publicity in 1997. But the company has a long and chequered history with airport operations in the UK, owning a number of bases as part of its vast commercial property empire.

They first began operating on a small scale from Doncaster in 2006, flying to Polish cities and serving the growing community of Poles who had settled in South Yorkshire after the country joined the EU. The airport's most famous tenant is the Vulcan To The Sky Trust, who care for the XH558 aircraft - a Cold War survivor. South Yorkshire had been without a regional airport since the last scheduled flights from Sheffield City ended in 2002 - the site having struggled to attract airlines in the early years of the budget travel revolution because of space constraints. At the time, EasyJet's decision was blamed on operational restrictions, as only one aircraft was used and it was not based at the site.
