The process will continue until two are left. Seen as one of the frontrunners in the race, Ms Mordaunt declined to describe Mr Johnson as a good Prime Minister, instead thanking him for delivering Brexit. The minister told Sky News that Ms Truss “opposed the endless tax rises of the former chancellor, which I think have been economically damaging, I also was opposed to (them) in Cabinet”. Mr Rees-Mogg argued that the Foreign Secretary is “fiscally on the right side of the argument”, unlike Mr Sunak. Asked if No 10 is involved in an anti-Sunak operation as the first round of voting loomed, Mr Johnson’s press secretary bluntly said: “No.” Mr Zahawi along with Mr Hunt, who has held the offices of health and foreign secretary, both failed to get the 30 votes required to get to the next stage.

Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt are pulling ahead in the race but the others are struggling to gain publicly declared support from Tory MPs.

In a tweet, Mr Tugendhat said: "This is a fantastic result. Voting cards will be sent to the 200,000 Tory members over the summer and the deadline for them to be complete will be late August. Mr Tugendhat said it was a "fantastic result" to reach the contests' next stage and a spokeswoman for Ms Truss said it was "time to unite behind the candidate" who will deliver economic change.

Jeremy Hunt: Tory saviour or “Theresa May in trousers”? (New Statesman)

As he vies to be the next prime minister and considers a leadership bid, the former health secretary is dividing opinion in both his party and the NHS.

The problem is he is over-exposed as a wannabe candidate,” said a former cabinet colleague, reflecting that Hunt has made himself vulnerable to attacks from No 10. He oversaw a cap on pay increases for NHS staff, and failed to recruit enough health workers – there is still a huge shortage of doctors and nurses plaguing the NHS he left behind. According to one Tory adviser, he risks sounding like “the real Captain Hindsight” (a nickname Johnson gives Keir Starmer) – preaching about where the government went wrong on the health service despite having run it himself for six years. Making a new name for himself during Covid-19 as a Conservative critic of government policy, he voiced “surprise and concern” that Boris Johnson didn’t lock down sooner in March 2020, and warned against “external visits to care homes” at the time. One former cabinet colleague described his name as still being “mud” in the health service today. (Though he is still gaffe-prone, infamously referring to his Chinese wife as “Japanese” during a 2018 Beijing visit.)

As Jeremy Hunt makes his case for the top job in Number 10, the former health secretary has vowed to "win back trust" after Prime Minister Boris Johnson's scandal-ridden premiership comes to an end. It is to restore trust.” Mr Hunt, 55, has sought to use his distance from the previous Government – after refusing a job in Mr Johnson’s Cabinet in 2019 – as a key selling point of his appeal, as ministers scramble to reinstate public trust in the Conservative Party. Last week, Mr Hunt told the Telegraph: “It’s very straightforward why I want to do it [the job of Prime Minister]. "It is because we have to restore trust, grow the economy, and win the next election.

Hunt should not be ruled out of this contest, it may be refreshing for those voting to see a non-Johnson loyalist in the top job. As a remainer and inner-city liberal he has attempted to broaden his support base by offering the job of Deputy Prime Minister to arch-Brexiteer and Northern Tory, Esther McVey. This will come as a surprising move to many Tory MPs and members, and he will perhaps need to do more convincing to the 200,000 Conservative Party Members that he has dropped his pro-EU stance. Hunt is often seen as a more moderate member of the Conservative Party due to his close work with former PM Theresa May and his advocacy of the ‘Remain’ vote in the 2016 Brexit referendum.

Results in from first round of knockout votes in contest to decide next party leader and prime minister.

Two candidates just made it over the line – Tom Tugendhat, chair of the foreign affairs committee, with 37 backers and Suella Braverman, the attorney general who was the first person to declare her intention to run last week, with 32. Zahawi, who was made chancellor last week as Johnson tried to shore up his dying government, gained 25 votes, while Hunt, the former health and foreign secretary who lost out in the final stage of the 2019 leadership election, got 18. Under the rules for the contest – set by the 1922 Committee of backbenchers – MPs needed 20 supporters to be officially included in the election, and more than 30 to progress to the second round.

As you will no doubt have noticed, I've thrown my hat into the ring to become the next leader of the Conservative Party and prime minister.

I hope my party will give me the chance to help unlock it. This will allow us to stop the plans to cut 10,000 personnel from our army and ensure we support Ukraine as is necessary. But this time there are two particular challenges we face – Putin’s aggression in Ukraine and a shrinking economy.
