Trade minister likens Boris Johnson to Paul McCartney playing new songs when people want the hits.
Asked which of the pair they would support, 67% picked Mordaunt, and just 28% went for the former chancellor. Seen by some as the “woke candidate” for her antipathy to the urge by some colleagues for the party to focus on “wedge issues” such as gender identity, Mordaunt stressed that she believed there was a “biological difference” between those who were born male and female. Mordaunt touted her Brexiter credentials, saying her plans for a “modern economy” focused on growth and competition, rather than tax and spending, would “yield a Brexit dividend”.
Penny Mordaunt has emerged as an early favourite for the top job, with many bookmakers putting her level with former Chancellor Rishi Sunak.
However, she was replaced by Ben Wallace when Mr Johnson took over as leader two months later. Ms Mordaunt is the only candidate so far promising to reverse the Treasury’s “stealth tax” of freezing income tax thresholds. Ms Mordaunt has recently been pushing for state-wide trade deals with the US and has been leading the work on joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership trade bloc. She is a Royal Navy reservist, following in the military footsteps of her father. The 49-year-old is from Torquay in Devon. She is the daughter of a former paratrooper, and says she is named after the Royal Navy ship HMS Penelope. Before becoming an MP, Ms Mordaunt was head of youth for the Conservative Party under former Prime Minister John Major, and was head of broadcasting under William Hague. She also briefly worked as head of foreign press for George W Bush’s presidential campaign in 2000.
Leadership hopeful tells colleagues she's the party's 'best shot' at winning next election.
We have a manifesto that we have to deliver and standards and trust to restore”. “I stood on the same platform as Boris Johnson and every other member of parliament in my party. “If we do not win the next general election all those opportunities and the vision the British people had from us leaving the EU will not be realised. We don’t fear any of them.” I am your best shot at winning that election,” she added. We’ve got to catch up after Covid and we have a war.
Penny Mordaunt, who polling suggests is the most popular candidate among grassroots members, quoted Margaret Thatcher as she referenced the divisive issue ...
"I am very different from Boris Johnson but we are still on the same manifesto, and I think we both believe in the same things." She brushed off questions about whether she would call a snap general election, arguing that having stood on the same platform as Mr Johnson and other Tories in the 2019 election "we have a mandate and a big majority". And she bragged to loud cheers among supporters: "I am the candidate that Labour fear the most." "We don't have to spend more money to deliver these services, we just have to do them in a better way." The candidate said: "We have to admit that Whitehall is broken." She is the latest candidate to use the issue as a wedge to gain support in her bid to become Prime Minister.

I’m backing her to be our next Prime Minister.” See the list She said she would fix a “broken” Whitehall machine through the “white heat of modernisation” with a “tighter” cabinet.
Back again then, to the same old tiny sweltering hot anteroom of a Westminster curry house for yet another leadership campaign launch.
Mr Sunak, naturally, is not the only candidate to be claiming to be the candidate Labour most fears. The Tory leadership contest still has almost a full two months to go. According to Penny Mordaunt, the problem with the Tory party is that it “lost its sense of self”. She had the temerity to compare it to Paul McCartney’s Glastonbury set. Because two long years in Downing Street, and careful stewardship of a rolling bin fire of an economy, surely won’t eradicate that single point advantage. The entire point of what’s happening to the Tory party is that the country absolutely 100 per cent do not want to hear their greatest hits anymore. There is, as ever, nothing of interest to say about Mr Johnson’s PMQs. All bluff, all bluster, and all over very soon indeed. “This,” she said, “was a country that stands up to bullies.” (Alba are Alex Salmond’s SNP splinter group, in case you’ve got the good fortune never to have heard of them.) The main point is that Paul McCartney is quite possibly the single most loved British thing on the planet and his Glastonbury set has been instantly revered as arguably the greatest in Glastonbury history. Maybe the country did stand up to bullies, 40 years ago. Whereas around the country, people are crying out, quite literally in agony, about how the NHS is completely dysfunctional, about how they can’t pay their energy bills, how they can’t afford to buy food. Six years ago, on almost the same day, in the same room, it was the same thing, only the other way around.
CONSERVATIVE contender Penny Mordaunt defended her Brexit referendum claims that the UK did not have the power to block Turkey's accession into the European ...
But I think it was disingenuous of him to claim that the UK could have vetoed it when it was his own policy and he had given that undertaking." Iain Dale interjected: "But he could have vetoed it. "Obviously, he’s gone," Ms Mordaunt said. Ms Mordaunt hit back: "Because David Cameron gave an undertaking that he would support their accession. In an interview with Andrew Marr show, she also falsely claimed Turkey joining the EU was "very likely" though accession talks have failed since 2016. During the 2016 Brexit referendum, Tory leadership candidate Penny Mordaunt – who was then Armed Forces minister – made the misleading claim that Britain would not be able to stop Turkey from joining the EU – and potentially start coming into Britain in the wake of the 2015 migrant crisis.
The trade minister launched her pitch to be the next prime minister by assuring Conservative MPs she is best placed to keep them their seats.
“Well, they’re very sensible people because I’m a threat to their campaign,” she said, but added that the only people she will take the fight to is the Opposition. She argued that having stood on the same platform as Mr Johnson and other Tories in the 2019 election “we have a mandate and a big majority”. “I’m the candidate that Labour fear the most – and they’re right to,” she told Conservatives and reporters closely crammed into the sweltering room. The long-term Brexit backer said the Government supply side reforms would yield a “Brexit dividend” on investment, infrastructure and innovation. Leadership contender Penny Mordaunt has told Conservative MPs fearful of losing their seats under Boris Johnson that she is the candidate “Labour fear the most”. But she insisted she is “very different” from her would-be predecessor but indicated she would not call an early general election to win her own mandate if she entered No 10.
Penny Mordaunt will believe momentum is with her - whereas Foreign Secretary Liz Truss should feel anxious, writes Robert Peston. | ITV National News.
So the question is whether he has enough backers signed up or likely to come over such that he can lend some of their votes to any candidate he would feel more confident of beating in the final run-off. You will notice I am making a bold assumption - which may not hold - that Sunak is very likely to get to the long run-off contest over the summer, since he needs only another 32 votes to reach the magic 120, which guarantees a spot in the last two. For those Boris Johnson loyalists who want Sunak beaten at all costs, one question is whether they transfer their loyalties from Truss to Mordaunt - especially since recent polling (for example by YouGov) shows that Sunak may struggle to beat Mordaunt in the final run-off when Tory party members make the important decision on which of the two top candidates will be party leader and prime minister.
MP for Portsmouth North, Penny Mordaunt, launched her Tory leadership campaign at the Cinnamon Club in Westminster, London.
If I have a hysterectomy or mastectomy, I am still a woman. And I am legally a woman. A new YouGov snap poll of Conservative party members – put into field yesterday after the confirmation of candidates – shows that she is the new favourite for leader among members. Ms Mordaunt also said she stands by the Conservative manifesto commitment to meet the Nato target for defence spending of 2% of GDP and increase it by 0.5% above inflation every year. The naval reservist and former defence secretary pledged to return the party to traditional Conservative values of ‘low tax, small state and personal responsibility’. Penny Mordaunt launched her campaign for the Conservative Party leadership with the statement ‘I’m the candidate that Labour should fear the most’ – and the latest polls back this.

She then said: "I do feel strongly that I need to stand up for what is in the national interest... "A lot of people will say they really like her, really admire her. David Davis, a heavyweight in the Conservative Party, has endorsed the international trade ministers over her track record of defending Brexit despite resistance when Theresa May was still in power. I’ve actually seen Penny in operation." She was the best performer. You know, she’s held two Cabinet posts.

Penny Mordaunt will succeed Boris Johnson as the next leader of the Tory party, an exclusive Conservative leadership election forecast suggests.
So far in the leadership race, Ms Mordaunt has performed well - gaining public declarations of support from Conservative colleagues to help her progress through the first phases of the race. Mr Zahawi, brought in by Boris Johnson after Mr Sunak’s resignation, got 25 and Mr Hunt only 18. The forecast predicts that the trade minister will finish in first place, with 133 MP votes.
Rishi Sunak has come out on top but did not get enough votes to establish a commanding position.
But less than a week ago, the conventional wisdom in Westminster was still that he stood an outside chance of victory – and a month ago he was regarded as one of the favourites. Mr Zahawi lost his bid for the leadership when Ms Mordaunt effectively stole his pitch to be the unity candidate – but his endorsement will be highly valued. They are both set to get senior jobs in the new Government, whoever is elected, but they would need a remarkable run of good luck to have any serious chance of reaching No 10 themselves.
Second place in the first ballot to succeed Boris Johnson – plus a shock poll – has drawn the trade minister into the spotlight.
And the YouGov survey showed Mordaunt is now the clear favourite for leader among these Conservative members. While never a rank outsider, Mordaunt has been put in the second-tier of leadership hopefuls because of better name recognition among other candidates. The MP for Portsmouth North since 2010, Mordaunt’s career before politics was largely in public relations.
Scramble is on for Tory hopefuls to pick up the votes of Jeremy Hunt and Nadhim Zahawi, who have been eliminated.
That could all change with the TV debates on Friday and Sunday. With Braverman likely to be eliminated in tomorrow’s vote, the remaining five are set to participate. After the announcement, one ally of the Foreign Secretary described the results unenthusiastically as “solid”. She will have lost votes to Braverman and to Kemi Badenoch, who was only ten votes behind her. One ally of Sunak, the former chancellor, predicted that some survivors may fail to secure the requisite 30 votes tomorrow as MPs focus on the leaders.
Ex-chancellor and trade minister will face four other candidates in next round of voting by MPs.
Jeremy Hunt and Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi were both eliminated in the first round of voting among Tory MPs, with former chancellor Rishi Sunak topping the ballot ...
He said: “We will cut taxes and we will do it responsibly. That’s my economic approach. Around 160,000 Tory members will then choose the next party leader and prime minister. Elsewhere, former army officer Tom Tugendhat, who has pledged to boost defence spending, took a thinly-veiled swipe at Mr Sunak’s refusal to set “arbitrary targets” in this area, telling reporters: “We will never put the safety of our country in doubt because of bean counters and spreadsheets. The naval reservist and former defence secretary pledged to return to traditional Conservative values of “low tax, small state and personal responsibility”. Mr Rees-Mogg argued that the Foreign Secretary is “fiscally on the right side of the argument”, unlike Mr Sunak. The minister told Sky News that Ms Truss “opposed the endless tax rises of the former chancellor, which I think have been economically damaging, I also was opposed to (them) in Cabinet”. Ms Mordaunt officially launched her campaign yesterday by telling colleagues who had been fearful of losing their seats under Mr Johnson’s leadership that she is their “best shot” at winning the next election. Ms Dorries, the Culture Secretary, accused the former chancellor’s campaign of deploying “dirty tricks” and backed Ms Truss as the Brexiteers’ candidate. Scottish Tory MP John Lamont, who is backing Ms Mordaunt, said the result of the first round of voting was “promising”. “Everyone in our great country should be born with the same opportunities and be able to know that the town they are born in has opportunity”. Mr Hunt, who failed to get the 30 votes required to get to the next stage, has held the offices of health and foreign secretary and lost to Mr Johnson in the 2019 leadership race.
Jeremy Hunt and Nadhim Zahawi are knocked out in the first ballot of Tory MPs, with six candidates left in the race to succeed Boris Johnson.
They are absolutely gutted and it’s because he f***ed it last week by taking the position of Chancellor and then telling Johnson to go.” An MP on his team said: “It is like what happened with David Cameron who came from the outside. A member of Mrs Badenoch’s team told i: “We’re delighted with that result, we’re through with headroom. In each future round, the lowest-placed candidate will be eliminated. Mrs Braverman narrowly avoided elimination as she won 32 votes. A source close to Mr Sunak said that having picked up a quarter of the vote he was the clear frontrunner, adding: “Every poll shows only Rishi can beat Starmer, and is the candidate the public think would make the best PM.
She clashed with right-wing Conservative MPs at a major hustings event attended by the six candidates left in the contest after the first round of voting.
At the 1922's hustings Sir John, a leading supporter of Ms Braverman, challenged Ms Mordaunt on the issue and was later said by colleagues to be "incandescent" at her reply. Ms Braverman is now one of Ms Mordaunt's leadership rivals and has already criticised her over a move to replace "woman" with "pregnant person" in the 2021 legislation. And she was challenged at a hustings staged by the 1922 Committee over her handling of a bill to allow Attorney General Suella Braverman to take maternity leave last year.
'I didn't even know where she was,' says ex-negotiator in scathing attack on favourite's Brexit credentials.
Ms Truss has appealed to Brexiteers by claiming she was a “reluctant Remainer” at the 2016 Brexit referendum. “All three of those candidates … are saying very interesting things, things that the country needs to hear. Tory members predict trade minister will rise to top as former chancellor fails to clinch a high percentage of first round votes.
Former Brexit minister and other Liz Truss allies hit out at Mordaunt after she came second in first ballot.
“Even if the style is different, the substance will not be very different.” Mordaunt, who had little interaction with the EU during her ministerial career, is not well known in Brussels. Those who have followed her career are not enthused about her moving to No 10. “I’m afraid this became such a problem that after six months I had to ask the PM to move her on and find somebody else to support me. In an interview with the Spectator she suggested tax cuts could be paid for through extra borrowing. She wouldn’t always deliver tough messages to the EU when that was necessary and I’m afraid she wasn’t fully accountable or always visible. “I’m sorry to say this, she did not master the necessary detail in the negotiations last year.
Penny Mordaunt's belly flop on ITV series Splash! goes viral as politician competes to become the next Prime Minister of the UK.
‘We will stand with Nato in defence of our common values and we will not flinch from the hard graft and putting boots on the ground on the alliance’s borders.’ Following her bid for leadership, Ms Mordaunt has vowed to make defence the ‘first duty’ of government should she emerge victorious in the race for Number 10. ‘Petition for ITV to put all episodes of Splash! on Demand if Penny gets to the final 2,’ one penned.
The former Brexit minister said Ms Mordaunt was not up to the job when she was his deputy in talks with the EU.
She wouldn’t always deliver tough messages to the European Union when that was necessary. Lord Frost continued: “I am quite surprised at where she is in this leadership race. MPs are voting today and I think they need to know the facts.

The remarks were seized on by the Truss campaign, with Treasury Chief Secretary Simon Clarke saying: “Lord Frost’s warning is a really serious one. He told TalkTV: “I am quite surprised at where she is in this leadership race. “Because I don’t cut taxes to win elections, I win elections to cut taxes, and I’m convinced that I’m the best person to beat Keir Starmer and the Labour Party at the next election.” She wouldn’t always deliver tough messages to the European Union when that was necessary. “She wasn’t fully accountable, she wasn’t always visible. A second round of voting will take place on Thursday, which will see the lowest placed of the six remaining candidates eliminated from the race – although pressure is already growing from Ms Truss’s allies for Suella Braverman and Kemi Badenoch to abandon their bids and for their supporters on the right of the party to unite around the Foreign Secretary.
Latest updates: foreign secretary says she is 'ready to be prime minister on day one' as another round of voting is due to start.
He was also reluctant to discuss what role Gavin Williamson was playing on his campaign, and, when asked if Williamson was a good education secretary, he sidestepped the question. I try to monitor the comments below the line (BTL) but it is impossible to read them all. But now the main threat is coming from Penny Mordaunt, and Truss will take a swipe at her by implying she does not have the experience to be PM from day one. I felt she did not master the detail that was necessary in the negotiations last year. Whenever I have needed to step in to support people I have and furlough is a fantastic example of that. (Mordaunt has served in cabinet, but as international development secretary, one of the most junior jobs, for about a year and a half, and as defence secretary for less than three months.) Sunak, the former chancellor and Tory leadership candidate, said that “of course” he intended to stay in the UK if he did not become prime minister. She wouldn’t always deliver tough messages to the European Union when that was necessary. Sunak played down claims that Sir Gavin Williamson, the former Tory chief whip and former education secretary, is playing a major role in his campaign. Truss has the support of Boris Johnson loyalists in the party and in the media (especially the Daily Mail), but it feels as if all the candidates in this contest can’t yet work out whether they are supposed to be praising Johnson and his legacy, or rubbishing him. That claim is half justified by recent polling from Ipsos Mori, which shows more people think he is likely to make a good PM than they think Keir Starmer is, or any of the other Tory leadership candidates are. Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, is officially launching her campaign for the Conservative party leadership this morning but within the last 24 hours she has probably been revising her script quite considerably.
Penny Mordaunt came under fire from allies of Liz Truss as the Tory leadership contest became increasingly bitter.
The remarks were seized on by the Truss campaign, with Treasury Chief Secretary Simon Clarke saying: “Lord Frost’s warning is a really serious one. “I am a loyal person. He told TalkTV: “I am quite surprised at where she is in this leadership race. – Ms Mordaunt used a piece in the Daily Mail to stress her credentials on defence, calling it the “first duty” of Government to honour the UK’s Nato commitment of spending 2.5% of GDP on defence by 2030. She wouldn’t always deliver tough messages to the European Union when that was necessary. Asked what Sir Gavin’s role is, Mr Sunak said: “Like all the Members of Parliament who are on my team, they are talking to colleagues and making the case for my candidacy because they believe that I am the best person to beat Keir Starmer and the Labour Party and I’m really grateful for all their support.” “She wasn’t fully accountable, she wasn’t always visible. “Because I don’t cut taxes to win elections, I win elections to cut taxes, and I’m convinced that I’m the best person to beat Keir Starmer and the Labour Party at the next election.” A second round of voting will see the lowest placed of the six remaining candidates eliminated from the race – although pressure is already growing from Ms Truss’s allies for Suella Braverman and Kemi Badenoch to abandon their bids and for their supporters on the right of the party to unite around the Foreign Secretary. “Whenever I have needed to step in to support people I have, and furlough is a fantastic example of that. I am loyal to Boris Johnson. I supported our Prime Minister’s aspirations and I want to deliver the promise of the 2019 manifesto,” she said on Thursday morning, to cheers from her campaign team. The Foreign Secretary is bidding to see off rival Penny Mordaunt, who is under fire from allies of Ms Truss after a surge of support for the trade minister.

And I'm afraid this became such a problem that after six months, I had to ask the Prime Minister to move her on and find somebody else to support me.' Mr Sunak also faced questions after failing to land the knockout blow his team had been expecting. However, separate research by Savanta ComRes tonight underlined the challenges Ms Mordaunt would face with the wider electorate. Late July and August - CCHQ will assume responsibility for leadership election and will send out ballot papers to around 200,000 Conservative Party members. 'I think our number one economic priority is to tackle inflation and not make it worse. But of course it doesn't.' The lowest-scoring candidate will be eliminated each time. One source said the rivals should 'recognise the reality of the situation'. Penny Mordaunt (right) performed better than expected in the first round. She has been installed as the bookies' favourite after bombshell polling suggested that she would win head-to-heads against any of her rivals. 'We are at a critical moment for our country,' she said. Ms Truss's team have unveiled ministers Ed Argar, James Heappey and Tom Purseglove as new backers.

Treasury Chief Secretary Simon Clarke - who is also backing the Foreign Secretary, added: "Lord Frost's warning is a really serious one. “It’s not always easy but it’s fair because if you’re running for an office like this, I think it’s fair that those who know you express views,” he said. Despite losing five votes since yesterday and trailing behind the competition, a Tom Tugendhat campaign source insisted he will not be pulling out of the Tory leadership race. The winner will become Prime Minister on September 6. Ms Braverman, who ran a hard-right campaign vowing to leave the European Convention on Human Rights and restrict benefits, won just 27, less than yesterday. At the moment they’re playing games.”
Seemingly from nowhere, the Minister of State for Trade Policy has become one of the front-runners in the battle to replace Boris Johnson in September.
Indeed, she's got a strong military background: her father was a parachuter before retraining as a teacher, and she was named after HMS Penelope. She was also a member of the Royal Navy from 2010-2019, and is currently the only female MP who is a Royal Naval Reserve. It is her military knowledge and experience that she hopes might help her get the top job at No 10, particularly in the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. An MP for Portsmouth North since 2010, Penny's first big roles in government were under David Cameron, when she was both Armed Forces Minister and Defence Secretary, becoming the first woman to hold the former role. According to a report published in the Daily Mail earlier this week, only 11 per cent of the public can identify MP Penny Mordaunt when shown a photograph of her.

He added: “Anything but blue please.” Sometimes I didn’t even know where she was. She then addressed the matter again later in her speech, claiming: “I can tell you if you have been in the Royal Navy and competed against men, you know the difference between men and women.” Attempting to clarify her position, during her leadership launch Mordaunt said: “Let me deal with the issue that is floating in the background there. He continued: “She did not master the detail that was necessary in the negotiations last year, she wouldn’t always deliver tough messages to the EU when that was necessary, and I’m afraid she wasn’t fully accountable and she wasn’t always visible. Penny Mordaunt closed her gap on frontrunner Rishi Sunak as the race to succeed Boris Johnson at the helm of the U.K.'s governing Conservative Party ...
Johnson is staying on in an interim capacity while the leadership race plays out, and will step aside September 6, after the new leader is confirmed in the job. Truss, who earned the valuable backing of former Brexit negotiator David Frost Thursday, is popular among the Right of the Conservative Party, and both her and Badenoch, a former equalities minister who has run on a free-market, anti-‘woke’ ticket, are well-placed to gather up support from Braverman’s backers. Under Conservative Party rules, MPs get to have the first say on the field of hopefuls, eliminating the lowest-placed candidate in successive rounds of voting before the final two are put to a vote of the wider Tory membership.
Analysis: Confident message from MP relatively untainted by association with Johnson seems to resonate with many Tories.
(Hunt has not returned the favour, swinging behind Sunak on Wednesday after winning just 18 votes in the first round). She is a trade minister – but unlike Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, Suella Braverman or the ill-fated Nadhim Zahawi, did not sit in Boris Johnson’s cabinet, or form part of his inner circle. At her campaign launch on Wednesday, she took plenty of questions and parried them wryly – contrasting with the more senior Liz Truss’s woodenness at her own speech the next day.

Wolverhampton focus group members say Liz Truss is like John Major and Rishi Sunak 'too slick'
Voters think she isn’t associated with the ruling class in Westminster. Many have never heard of her, but they like the cut of her jib – and they think she might be a breath of fresh air,” Mr Dorrell added. “I just think Brexit is one big mess,” said a mother of two, who works in a car dealership. When the group was shown a video of the Labour leader, two out of the five could not name him but recognised him. “She looks devious,” said the engineer. Another, who runs his own mobile disco company, said: “She’s a bit like the [John Major] Spitting Image puppet. “Liz Truss just seems a bit cold.”
