Manchester United vs Melbourne Victory LIVE (Manchester Evening News)

Live updates and analysis as Man Utd face Melbourne Victory in their second pre-season match under Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag is already quite animated and it has nothing to do with the possibility of speaking to the media. The A-League side are getting a lot of men behind the ball and they are competing for every loose ball. United had a fitness advantage against Liverpool on Tuesday, but this is a big night for Melbourne Victory and United are struggling with their intensity at the moment in a game they probably expected to cruis through. Maguire is starting as the right centre-back, which is insignificant in essence but playing him on the left side was somehow cited as an excuse for his error-strewn performances last season. That was a magnificent team goal, started by the goalkeeper. Melbourne look well organised and are lively on the counter whereas United’s forwards have not settled into a rhythm just yet. Maguire is getting cheered whenever he gets the ball. United are being noticeably more patient with the ball in the final third. Ten Hag is still stood in the technical area as he observes. Tyrell Malacia is on the bench. United’s 10 half-time subs are currently warming up and it looks like a front three of Chong, Amad and Rashford, so you would think there’s a good chance that means Rashford through the middle. Sancho looks the most likely to create something.

Manchester United transfer news LIVE (Manchester Evening News)

We'll bring you the latest Man United transfer news including updates on Frenkie de Jong and Lisandro Martinez all day long.

Club sources have confirmed discussions are progressing for United to sign the 24-year-old centre-back. United turned their attention to Martinez last month after his Ajax teammate Jurrien Timber opted to stay with the Dutch champions. Club sources have confirmed discussions are progressing for United to sign the 24-year-old centre-back. Ronaldo also didn't travel with the rest of the squad for their pre-season tour and is now in Lisbon. History has a case of repeating itself, and United fans will hope it does soon. But for 90 minutes at least against Liverpool, the saga was forgotten and United provided a glimpse of what life after Ronaldo (part two) might look like.

The Red Devils have agreed a £63million fee with Barcelona for the 25-year-old, who is set to be sold as the La Liga giants look to balance their finances. So, with that being the case, Express Sport has decided to get a little creative… If De Jong does move to United, he’ll become the latest player to turn out for both the Red Devils and Barcelona. But United remain confident they can get a deal over the line and that the 25-year-old is open to a new challenge in Manchester. They can’t offer De Jong that same bait, either, with the Red Devils due to be strutting their stuff in the Europa League. That development came after the Red Devils had sent Richard Arnold and John Murtough out to Catalonia in order to broker a deal.

"What I'm saying, there is absolutely nothing of an agreement [with United] or anything official," De Jong told reporters last month. De Jong and his partner Mikky Kiemeney have recently purchased a house in Catalonia, while the player still believes he can play an important role in Xavi's team. They have agreed an initial £63million transfer fee with Barcelona but are struggling to persuade the player to move to England. The Catalan giants can't register new signing Raphinha, who scored 11 Premier League goals for Leeds last term, until they trim their budget. How am I going to leave Barcelona?" Ten Hag is looking to rebuild the club's stuttering squad but has signed just one player so far, defender Tyrell Malacia.

Ten Hag's side have turned the game on its head in a matter of minutes. Dalot's cross is flicked on by Elanga to Martial and from six yards out, the Frenchman ...

It's a period of transition for the club with the Dutchman now at the helm and their supporters will have been encouraged to see a very different United performance in Thailand than they were used to seeing last season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick. Today's match against Melbourne Victory will understandably be less of an indication as to what fans can expect for next season. Luke Shaw is once again preferred to new signing to Tyrell Malacia, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Donny van de Beek and Eric Bailly also notable names amongst the substitutes. The Portuguese was hugely popular during his eight years with Man United between 2007 and 2015, making 230 appearances and scoring 40 goals. McTominay sees another shot blocked by the Melbourne defender. A shock lead for Melbourne. Fernandes is played down the right, he pulls it back for McTominay and his shot is blocked behind for a corner. Probably a little harsh... The half-time whistle blows almost immediately after Martial's strike. This is Maguire's first appearance of the season after he missed the Liverpool game in Bangkok on Tuesday with a niggle but he was alarmingly slow to react the danger and watched Chris Ikonomidis breeze ahead of him to slot home Folami's cross. HERE HE IS! As time looked to be running out, Nani is introduced for Melbourne against his former club. So a 4-1 win for United and more for Erik ten Hag to chew over. He replaces goal-scorer Ikonomidis.

Match Hub and Highlights: Melbourne Victory 1 United 4 (Manchester United)

Manchester United made it two wins from two games on Tour 22, as Erik ten Hag's side came from behind to defeat Melbourne Victory by four goals to one.

Former Reds winger Nani was then introduced with just a few minutes to go, making his debut for the hosts seven years after his departure from Old Trafford. Fred's goal was the only difference when the two sides met at Old Trafford last December, and attention now turns to next week's pre-season showdown. Then, just moments before the break, the Reds went ahead. The scoring was then completed with just minutes remaining, when Edmond Lupancu diverted a Tahith Chong cross into his own net to make it 4-1, ensuring a second pre-season win for our new Dutch boss. With 15 minutes to go, United had a third, as Eric Bailly burst forward to feed Rashford. The England international nudged his effort beyond Izzo, and opened his Tour 22 account in the process. Zidane Iqbal showcased his talents with a superb piece of skill, as the Reds continued to dominate possession.

His finish for the third goal was unerring after showing a burst of pace to break through. A couple of sharp forward bursts but not as eye-catching as others in the attack. Liked to bustle forward with the ball and will surely feature again in pre-season as Ten Hag decides what to do with him. Showed his natural composure with an ice-cool clearance under pressure right in front of his own goal and he mopped up Bailly's mistakes on a couple of occasions. His development will be interesting to watch in the season ahead. Will hope to return to his regular left-back position before the end of pre-season. Basically assumed a wing-back role with Victory camped in their own penalty box more and more as their legs tired after he break. We witnessed a few of his trademark 'low percentage' passes that came off and he linked the play neatly as normal but hardly a vintage display. Looked a liability at the back as he twice surrendered possession in dangerous positions with loose touches or slack passing. Two long-range efforts went high and wide, with several team-mates barracking him for choosing to shoot with the first of them. Serious doubts remain and Ten Hag will be anxious to get a deal for Lisandro Martinez over the line soon. Unable to replicate his delightful chip in the Liverpool game but wasn't for the want of trying.

What we learned at the MCG (Manchester United)

Erik ten Hag's Manchester United secured a second win of pre-season, by beating Melbourne Victory 4-1 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, in front of around ...

Still, it shows we have plenty of options for rotation in the forward positions, with Erik commenting in his Thursday press conference that he feels Donny van de Beek could also occupy an attacking midfield – and perhaps even a false no.9 – role. The Ivorian stood out when fielded there in the Liverpool clash, as he set up Facundo Pellistri’s goal – our fourth of the game – but Marcus soon swapped with him, latching on to Eric Bailly's through ball to score our third. The signing of the 35-year-old former United winger has been headline news in Australia all week and even though he’d only travelled Down Under earlier this week and trained twice with his new team-mates, Nani – who stopped to grab a quick word with MUTV before kick-off – was named on the Victory bench. Eight of the 10 replacements had also played in Bangkok, but for Ethan Laird and Tahith Chong, it was a chance to get some minutes in the legs and time on the pitch for United after spending much of the recent time out on loan. For the second friendly in a row, Erik opted to change his entire outfield line-up at the break, with Rashford captaining a younger and more inexperienced side in the second half. The Reds were behind for much of the first half, following a shock early Victory opener, but a couple of goals before half-time from Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial put us in the driving seat.

United's free transfers (Manchester United)

Manchester United confirmed the signing of Christian Eriksen on a free transfer on Friday, with the Dane agreeing a three-year contract. The midfielder's short- ...

Much debate was had about his future but Sir Alex made a decisive move for a player who had grown up with the enemy at Liverpool. The fact he took on Cristiano Ronaldo's no.7 jersey showed the manager was not worried about any of that, saying: "He'll give us experience in the penalty box. The decision disappointed Bhoys boss Martin O'Neill but Sir Alex had been impressed with somebody who caught his eye when he was believed to be scouting Vincent Kompany during a Champions League tie with Anderlecht at Parkhead. "Our relationship with Celtic has always been a good one," stressed Ferguson. "We took Brian McClair in exactly the same end-of-contract circumstances before the Bosman ruling came in. We tried to get Karim Benzema but, as soon as that dropped through, we went for Michael." That was evident early in his Reds career, when he scored a memorable injury-time winner in the Manchester derby, and he finished with 17 goals in 52 outings, including a strike in the League Cup final against Aston Villa. He also helped United win the league in 2010/11, something he had failed to manage at Anfield. However, he was later allowed to join Middlesbrough on a free transfer.Every pre-season game, including Tuesday's match against Crystal Palace, will be shown Fortunately, his output matched his ego and his signing proved a masterstroke, as he led the line superbly under Jose Mourinho. Like Cavani, he had left PSG and wanted to taste English football for the first time. "We were desperate to get him when Peter left because he was here when he was a lad but couldn't get a work permit," said the boss. The late Irish midfielder, who sadly passed away in 2018, failed to renew his contract with Celtic and signed a pre-agreement instead with United in January 2004, as was permitted under the Bosman ruling. However, injuries hampered his second campaign and he left this summer, with 19 goals in 59 matches to his name. The Dane's were big shoes to fill but Ferguson was convinced in the new man after agreeing a four-year contract. With Dean Henderson loaned to Nottingham Forest for the 2022/23 campaign, he could be hoping for more first-team exposure this term. Blanc played 75 times for the Reds and helped the team win the Premier League title in 2002/03. The stylish France international had been on United's radar for so long, even after appearing against Alex Ferguson's team for Montpellier during our successful European Cup Winners' Cup run in 1991.

Frenkie de Jong's hint as Barcelona and Man Utd transfer saga set ... (Daily Express)

MANCHESTER UNITED are hellbent on signing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona in this summer's transfer window.

€85m is a large price, but at the same time it wasn’t so long ago that he was seen as one of the hottest prospects in European football. “Ten Hag needs to be able to get the players he wants. And whether United are able to bring in a midfielder, as the clock starts to tick, is something only time will tell. It will be fascinating to see if the Red Devils can get a deal over the line, with the saga starting to resemble the failed pursuit of Cesc Fabregas back in 2013. And De Jong has now dropped a hint he’ll be with his Barcelona team-mates for their upcoming pre-season tour of the United States. Manchester United agreed a fee with Barcelona for De Jong earlier in the week, with the Red Devils prepared to pay an initial £63million to land their No 1 target.

Manchester United 'swap deal' has gone quiet despite Erik ten Hag ... (Daily Express)

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Erik ten Hag would love to sign a right-back in this summer's transfer window.

Manchester United want to land a new right-back this summer. “Aarons is exactly the sort of player they need to be looking at this summer.” “They may not be straight starters immediately but they go and they stay there for 10 years and have a really good career and they impact the club at different levels.” Erik ten Hag is unconvinced by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, while Diogo Dalot continues to struggle for consistency. Manchester United are looking to sign a new right-back as they look to challenge for the biggest trophies under Ten Hag. But there’s nothing at present to suggest the Red Devils are in for the Netherlands international.

Stam headlines 12 players United signed from Eredivisie clubs amid ... (United In Focus)

With Lisandro Martinez set to become Erik ten Hag's second signing, we take a look at Manchester United's previous Eredivisie signings.

Blind was signed by Van Gaal on deadline day in the summer of 2014 from Ajax, and he proved to be a decent option given his ability to play at left-back, centre-back and in centre-midfield. After arriving from PSV in 1998, Stam won three consecutive Premier League titles and was a key part of the Manchester United side that won the Treble in his first season at the club. A former Ajax youth player, Fosu-Mensah joined Manchester United as a 16-year-old in 2014 and made his first-team breakthrough at the club under his compatriot Van Gaal in 2015-16. Park quickly established himself as a cult hero in Manchester and he was a nailed on starter for Fergie in the big games due to his selfless running and qualities with and without the ball. What a piece of business this was from Sir Alex. After catching United’s attention with his performances for PSV, the South Korean legend was brought to Old Trafford in 2005. After making his debut in the crushing 4-0 defeat to MK Dons in the League Cup under Louis van Gaal, the midfielder went on to make 75 appearances for the United first team.

Man Utd are close to completing a third signing of the summer but they are still yet to secure either of their top targets for priority positions.

It had been expected a move for a central defender might only happen once one or two had left the club, but Arsenal wanted Martinez and that forced United to show their hand. With United now around halfway through their pre-season tour they are committed to ending their time in Bangkok, Melbourne and Perth with the only new face on board. It will naturally be frustrating to Ten Hag that he is now three weeks into pre-season training and the club still haven't signed players in the two key areas prioritised at the start of the window.

MANCHESTER UNITED aren't abandoning their transfer pursuit of Barcelona midfield maestro Frenkie de Jong.

Yet while they’ve agreed a fee with their La Liga counterparts, it’s still unclear if the 25-year-old will make the move to Old Trafford. "I will return to say goodbye to all the workers after the tour with Barca. Christensen has chosen to leave Chelsea to join Barcelona, with the Denmark international arriving on a free transfer. De Jong has travelled with the rest of the Barcelona squad for their pre-season tour of the United States, despite the club’s desire to jettison him. Barcelona need to register a host of new players and selling De Jong, really, is the only way they’re able to do that due to their financial situation. They agreed a fee with Barcelona just a couple of days ago, with the fallen Premier League giants prepared to pay £63million in order to bring the Netherlands international to the club.

Manchester United's Bid For Frenkie De Jong Has An 'Expiration Date' (SPORTbible)

Frenkie de Jong remains a Barcelona player for now, with Manchester United desperate to sign him, and he could remain there if things don't hurry up soon.

The club are hoping to announce the signing of Lisandro Martinez in the coming days, having reportedly agreed a fee with Ajax for the centre back. Jules Kounde and Bernardo Silva have also been linked with the club, and all that comes despite Kessi and Christiansen not being able to register for the club in the league. De Jong is desperate to stay at the Nou Camp, despite his club seemingly being open to let the player go, with Chelsea also reportedly interested.
