Channel 4 accused of bias by Tory MPs after leadership debate (Telegraph.co.uk)

'Woke presenter' Krishnan Guru-Murthy criticised by Conservatives who said 'candidates can barely get a word in'

Channel 4 said it used a vetting process from Survation, the polling firm. None of them put their hands up when asked if they trusted politicians, while three raised their hands when they were pressed on whether they felt the Conservative leadership candidates were offering enough support on the cost-of-living crisis. But this did not stop Conservative MPs from questioning the decision to hold the first televised contest on the channel.

Tory leadership rivals clash over trust and 'fairytale' economic plans (The Guardian)

Head-to-head sees open arguments over tax and identity politics, with no candidate willing to say Boris Johnson is honest.

A separate spat saw Mordaunt and Badenoch clash with visible enmity about the former’s views on trans rights. A separate show of hands after a debate on energy bills saw just three people say they felt politicians were doing enough to help people. A long section on trust saw none of the five willing say whether Johnson was honest. When Truss argued that better monetary policy would mitigate inflation even with tax cuts, Sunak snapped: “Liz, we have to be honest. In an earlier Zoom-based Q&A, hosted by the Conservative Home website, Truss sought to regain the initiative in the race by promising to scrap a planned rise in corporation tax and suspend green energy levies, costing more than £20bn a year overall. It’s as simple as that.”

Unfortunately we’ve not been immediately able to find any information about the 180 innovations Ms Mordaunt described, and it’s unclear what types of innovations she was referring to. According to Ofgem, environmental and social obligation costs account for around £153 of an average direct debit energy bill under the current price cap. However, she has signalled that, unlike some of her competitors, she would not reverse the recent 1.25 percentage point increase to National Insurance. The Institute for Fiscal Studies has published a round-up of some of the proposals and how much they could cost. The RAC has previously referred to filling up a 55 litre fuel tank when talking about the cost of fuel for an average family car. Tax was also a key topic for Ms Mordaunt, who said that her pledge to halve VAT on fuel would save the average family £10 every time they fill up.
