The Queen returned to the hospice in Berkshire in 2002, after the creation of an extension made to accommodate more people. Her Majesty delighted royal fans and dashed concerns over her health as she travelled to Maidenhead accompanied by the Princess Royal. There, the Queen attended the official opening of the new Thames Hospice building. The 96-year-old monarch, joined by the Princess Royal, was making a rare public appearance outside Windsor Castle, to formally launch the new home of the Thames Hospice, which has been welcoming members of the Royal family for decades. Now situated beside a picturesque lake surrounded by trees in nearby Maidenhead, the hospice's new building features an open plan reception with an airy atrium, a café and a shop.
