If you build it, people will come, goes the line from Field of Dreams. That soon will be put to the test. And for the next 10 days Eugene, Oregon will seek to conjure up an even greater feat: by making the rest of America follow suit.

The Scottish veterinarian has flitted between the two middle distances of 800m and 1500m but will only race the longer distance in Eugene. Like her team-mate Hodgkinson, she came away from Tokyo with a silver to break her duck in the chase for a first global medal. She has continued that form with one of the quickest times this year to win at the Bislett Games. The problem is that she is up against the American Athing Mu and Kenya’s Mary Moraa in her bid for gold. Like Coe, Burgin is coached by his father, and he looks clear of the hamstring and groin injuries that curtailed him last season.

Fan's Daily Viewing Guide & Preview of the World Athletics / Track ... (LetsRun.com)

A brief day-by-day breakdown and viewing guide of the World Championships starting with the first weekend.

The World Championships don’t waste any time in presenting you what is always one of the premier events, the men’s 100m final, and for US fans it will be on primetime NBC. Doesn’t get any better than this. American Galen Rupp, the greatest American long-distance runner of his generation, will get to compete in Eugene where he ran for the University of Oregon. Rai Benjamin of the USA and Alison Dos Santos of Brazil will be ready to fill any holes left if Warholm is not healthy as they became the 2nd and 3rd fastest ever at last year’s Olympics in getting silver and bronze, in a race that may have been the greatest race in track and field history. In the 10,000m, world record holder Joshua Cheptegei will square off against Selemon Barega, who beat him at the Olympics last year. For the first 4 days of Worlds, the action is broken up into “morning” (which may be in the afternoon on the East Coast) and evening sessions. The highlight of this session is the women’s 10,000m final. American medallists Courtney Frerichs and Emma Coburn get started in the steeplechase. Plus we’ll see if African record holder Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya, who beat American favorite Fred Kerley earlier this year, is able to advance after arriving Eugene less than 3 hours before the race starts after he only got a visa at the last minute. There is now a mixed-gender 4×400 relay where 2 men and 2 women run the legs for each country. We’ll have a brief overview of the key events and tell you where you can watch them. On TV, the action will be split between the USA, CNBC, and NBC networks with the weekend primetime action being on NBC. They start Friday, July 15 in Eugene, Oregon, and continue for the next nine days ending on Sunday, July 24.

Plus more of the latest results, memorable moments, news, and notes from the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

The United States 4×400 mixed relay team has automatically qualified for tonight’s final after coming in first place in the first heat. But it is highly likely that Felix (who has announced her impending retirement) will make her final World Championship appearance in the final, set for 7:50 p.m., Pacific time tonight. All three American 1500m contenders–Sinclaire Johnson, Elle (Purrier) St. Pierre, and Cory McGee–advanced past the first qualifying heats and will compete in Saturday’s semi-finals. She finished with the fastest time of the morning in 9:01.54. Joining in the semi-finals are expected international stand-outs such as Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon, the reigning Olympic gold medalist; Great Britain’s Laura Muir, who took silver in Tokyo; and Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay, an Olympic medalist in the 5000m. Wayment was ultimately edged into fourth place in 9:14.95 to Gega’s 9:14.91. Finot finished in first in 9:14.34 and set a national record. Each American woman came in fourth place in their heats and would have to wait to find out if they qualified based on time. Starting Friday, July 15 and lasting 10 days, World Athletics is putting on its championships for the world’s best track and field athletes. And unlike last year’s Olympics, these champs are open to fans—we’re looking forward to packed stadiums for the more than 20 events. The second heat, in which Wayment ran, was by far the biggest nail biter. Tsegay ran the fastest time of the night in 4:02.68 in the third and fastest heat. Wayment ran comfortably around fourth place most of the race, waiting until the bell lap to make her move.

Fred Kerley crossed the finish line in 9.86 seconds to win the gold while Marvin Bracy snagged silver, and Trayvon Bromell captured bronze.

But, in the final, Kerley showed the power and determination needed to finally get an individual gold on the world stage. “I am a fighter and this is why I decided to be in Eugene. After Kerley switched to the short sprints at the start of 2021, many experts scoffed at the decision. I promise I will do my best to make you dream!” “I’ve got a medal in 400m and 100m. This shows me I've got what it takes to get it done.” Fourth place went to 21-year-old Jamaican Oblique Seville, who ran 9.97 after clocking the fastest time in the semifinals (9.90). Bronze went to the man who began the season as a specialist decathlete, Simon Ehammer from Switzerland, who decided to concentrate on this event in 2022, where he heads the world list. Britain’s world 200m champion Dina Asher-Smith, whose Olympic aspirations were undermined by a hamstring injury, was fastest qualifier to tomorrow’s women’s 100 metres semi-finals in a season’s best of 10.84. "Now, in order not to compromise the rest of the season by risking a more serious injury, I have to postpone the challenge. Apart from a foul in the first round, Tentoglou was a model of consistency in the men’s long jump final, producing efforts of 8.30, 8.29, 8.24, 8.32 and finally 8.20m. Ealey’s winning mark in the women’s shot put came in the opening round, and although Gong threw big in the fifth round it was not enough to alter the result. There was gold for China on the night, however, as Jianan Wang - who took bronze at the home World Championships in Beijing seven years ago - won the men’s long jump with a final effort of 8.36m to defeat Greece’s Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou, who had to settle for silver on 8.32m. "I am a fighter and this is why I decided to be in Eugene. "We said we were going to do it and we did it," Kerley, who came from behind to take the title a year after winning Olympic silver in Tokyo, said in the on-track interview, moments after the crowd had finished chanting "USA! USA! USA!" It was a happy return for Wang, who won the world junior title in Eugene eight years ago. Fred Kerley led a United States clean sweep of the men’s 100 metres medals on day two of the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, clocking 9.86sec to finish ahead of compatriots Marvin Bracy and Trayvon Bromell, who took silver and bronze, respectively, in 9.88. This, however, was an achievement on home soil at the first outdoor World Championships to be held in the United States. It was the first time American sprinters had taken all three medals in this event at the World Championships since Carl Lewis, Leroy Burrell and Dennis Mitchell won respective gold, silver and bronze at the 1991 Tokyo edition.

For what it’s worth, my money is on Taylor winning the re-match, if it happens. And while this uncertainty about a re-match continues, this bad feeling is only going to intensify. From a Scottish perspective, this is a travesty. For Taylor’s sake, I hope an agreement is reached soon. A re-match either needs to be agreed upon – and if Taylor is as desperate for that to happen as he says he is, it shouldn’t be too hard – or else the Scot needs to make it clear he’s going to move up to 147lbs and move on from this controversy. One suggestion from McColgan is to allow people to bet on races and individuals in the same way people bet on horse racing.

U.S. champ Melissa Jefferson will lead the attempt to prevent a Jamaican sweep. If Fisher falters, fellow U.S. Olympian Joe Klecker is willing and able to pick up the slack. Grant Fisher’s U.S. record of 26:33 is the fastest time in the world this year. World 10K titles are almost always won by runners who can also sprint past their rivals in the final 200 meters. Unlike in hotter summer global marathon championships, there should be less incentive for the top contenders to dawdle and thereby open opportunities for slower entrants. And those are just the biggest of the big names. Of course, Fisher isn’t the only man in the field who can close like that. The U.S. squad is rounded out by Army First Lieutenant Elkanah Kibet and financial analyst Colin Mickow, who both train around demanding professional responsibilities.
