"When the police make an appeal, Jodie decides to come forward, believing her information to be of little consequence. Like this story? The official synopsis reads: "It’s business as usual for Jodie, a single mum who runs her own hairdressing salon, until she glances out of the window and catches a glimpse of an altercation between two men, but unbeknownst to her one of the men is about to be murdered.

Witness Number 3, review: low-budget Channel 5 thriller punches ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Creative directing, a strong cast and excellent writing can't mask the budget constraints, but this is a tense and convincing crime drama.

Her thought process is also fairly convincing: she comes forward to do the right thing, later considers withdrawing her statement out of fear of retribution, but then decides to go ahead because she refuses to be bullied. The colour palette is subdued, and lots of scenes take place in the dark. Jodie (Nina Toussaint-White) provides the police with descriptions of the pair, unaware of what crime has been committed.

That escalation and the fear of what's next for Jodie will have viewers hanging onto the edge of their seats – but what will really grip viewers and keep them watching is the early suggestion that someone in Jodie's life has betrayed her. The killer is a major player in a powerful gang and, after Jodie leaves the police station, she's being followed – almost as though the gang have been tipped off about her (we'll get to that in a moment).

It was a success and we saw her dancing with her child. Don’t read on if you haven’t seen it but the case of Jade, 41, who had a tumour low down in her throat was just devastating. Jodie’s first warning was being sent footage on her phone of a woman being gagged and bound. What they did for the likes of Dimitri, saving his arm and shoulder, was heroic. My one irritation with this otherwise grimly absorbing drama, which continues tonight, was that the first thing you’d do is change your phone number. Gang-related witness intimidation is a well-known problem (Dispatches did something on it a few years ago).

As a viewer, you are meant to feel that too, you are meant to suspect. You are in her head and you feel the paranoia that she feels and I don't think a lot of crime dramas focus on that. Her specialist areas including literature, the British Royal Family and knowing all there is to know about the latest TV shows on the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and every streaming service out there. Each of these episodes is an hour long, packing in all the drama, emotion and heart-stopping high stakes you could want from the Channel 5 show. Our sister site, TechRadar, has tested all of the major VPN services and they rate ExpressVPN (opens in new tab) as the absolute best. Without Jodie, Witness Number 3 just wouldn’t be the same and Nina has recently discussed with Express.co.uk (opens in new tab) and other press the choice for the drama to be shown through her characters’ eyes. The Witness Number 3 cast is led by Bodyguard star Nina Toussaint-White who many fans might also remember for her role as Syd Chambers in EastEnders back in 2009. Just like the Undeclared War ending showed sacrifices being made to prevent a serious cyber attack, Witness Number 3 shows the single mom and business owner placing herself in danger in the pursuit of justice. After seeing an appeal for witnesses, Jodie comes forward and becomes the anonymous Witness Number 3, though with a local gang member the focus of the murder enquiry, things soon escalate. It begins with strange text messages as a focused campaign of intimidation starts, pushing Jodie into paranoia and attempting to secure her silence. We reveal what you need to know as the show continues… But it’s not long before she finds herself paying for her good deed when she becomes the focus of a terrifying campaign to intimidate her.

Nina Toussaint-White is Jodie, a hairdresser who witnesses a crime only to finds herself the target of the assailant's gang.

Happily, for the remaining three episodes (not to mention our sense of civic responsibility), she’d decided to do the right thing and stand firm. The third of these chance onlookers was the titular Witness Number 3 – her official title on police forms – the owner of a hairdressing salon, called Jodie. Matters turned ominous when she was asked by a grungy-looking stranger if he could use her phone because he’d locked himself out of his flat.
