Jarrod Bowen had a shot blocked for the visitors as they looked to get a goal back in this friendly, before Jon McLaughlin pulled off another impressive save as he got a strong hand to a shot from Pablo Fornals to push it out for a corner. It was another debut goal, this time for Rabbi Matondo. He combined well with Tom Lawrence in the box as the ball was flicked into the path of the 20-year-old and fired home his first goal in Light Blue. Within minutes it was 2-0 to Rangers, James Tavernier again started the move, this time sending the ball infield to Tom Lawrence, who fed it out to the left to Ryan Kent. The winger struck the ball first time to send a powerful ball into the back of the net. The move started with captain James Tavernier down the right, as he fed the ball forward to Rabbi Matondo. He cut back the ball back from the byline, picking out Tom Lawrence and the Welsh international drilled a lovely low finish beyond Lukasz Fabianski.

On a balmy evening in Glasgow, the Hammers gave a first start of pre-season to Declan Rice as they took to the field for their fifth game of the summer.

There has been a palpable sense of renewal and realignment in Rangers' off-field activities across pre-season.

There is genuine promise in the astute-looking acquisitions of Matondo, Lawrence, Davies and Souttar, in particular, but also in the Bassey and Aribo deals. That is, they not only proved capable of being robust when confronted by a leading side from one of the big five leagues but able to give such an opponent a bloody nose. On that front, it helps that Rabbi Matondo - essentially a replacement for Aribo following the Wesh winger’s £2.5m move from Schalke - proved so exhilarating on his Ibrox bow.

The Rangers family tie charging emotional Union Saint Gilloise ... (Scottish Daily Record)

The Belgian champions hope to write another chapter of their miraculous rags to riches story by sending Rangers packing.

“We need to be careful because Rangers have a lot of experience in navigating each transfer window. O’Loughlin began planning for it back in January and does not expect Rangers to have been caught cold either by the loss of Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey. We try our best to create an environment of excellence where the guys can grow in a professional context. We look for a sporting return from the players as well as a cultural return. Back in the 90s, when English clubs were allowed to compete again in European competition, we started to see a lot of ties that really caught the imagination - a Manchester United or Arsenal against Juventus or Real Madrid. I suppose there’s no point in us hoping for this or that to happen - we’ve just got to prepare our best for the game and deal with what’s in front of us.” “It was something for the football romantic because of the history of those clubs. “I worked with him at Charlton for a while and, above all else, he is a fantastic human being. As I say, my father was from west Belfast and my mother’s side of the family are from Elgin. There were a lot of good historical clubs that we could have come up against - clubs with domestic and European pedigree. Director of sport, Chris O’Loughlin takes it all in his relaxed Irish stride these days, having been there for the start of Union’s unfathomable rise. “But I also have, on the other side of my family, a Scottish background.

The Ibrox side are on course to enjoy their most profitable transfer window with Bassey poised to follow Joe Aribo in leaving for big money.

It's understood a fee of £19m plus add-ons for the Nigeria international will be finalised in the coming days. For a while, at least. Van Bronckhorst's £8.5m move down south to Arsenal was the catalyst but there were several other notable departures. And, of course, the exciting part for fans is watching that cash being re-invested into Giovanni van Bronckhorst 's squad. Some considerable sales have been made down the years, either during the summer or in the January window, but not with any great regularity for a number of seasons. Joe Aribo has joined Southampton in the Premier League and Calvin Bassey is about to become Rangers' most expensive sale if, as expected, his move across Europe to Dutch champions Ajax is finalised in the coming days.
