Other images show Thorpe Park engulfed in smoke because of the fire. It comes following record-breaking temperatures in the country with Surrey sweltering in 39C heat earlier this week. A wildfire at Hankley Common has been declared a major incident by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) as firefighters battle flames at the popular nature reserve for the third time in a week.

A huge wildfire on the outskirts of the capital has seen towns across West London fill with smoke.

There are myriad firefighters there but it's very difficult to get to because it's on a common, so the sort of vehicles that can get to it are quite small. Surrey Fire and Rescue Service has issued a message to people, while a Thorpe Park visitor said they "could barely breathe" because of the smoke.

It is the third time in a week that firefighters have been called to Hankley Common to tackle flames at the site. "Our control room are receiving an incredibly high number of calls currently, and we are in attendance at a number of incidents around the county. In a tweet at around 2.30pm, SFRS said: "We have declared a major incident at Hankley Common due to a large fire in the open. The major incident carried "high volumes of smoke across a large area of the county" and SFRS told people to stop calling 999 about smoke clouds. The land surrounding Thorpe Park has been checked and will continue to be monitored." There's a very high wind at the moment too."

The smoke plume began to subside at around 4pm as firefighters controlled the blaze, and the incident was downgraded as a ‘major incident’ at 6.40pm.
