A boundary for vd Dussen on the fourth ball. The Durham bowler is the latest in a long line of England fast bowlers to suffer injury lay-offs. A reverse sweep on the second, and he gets another boundary. Topley's foot slips on the third. Slip's gone, and the chance goes begging, de Kock gets away with a boundary behind. A change in the field to entice vd Dussen into that sweep. A terrific sweep by vd Dussen, but it's stopped before the boundary. This is a quietly important game for an England team who have suffered a crisis of confidence in the last few weeks. 16th over: South Africa 97-1 (de Kock 58, van der Dussen 25) No real movement for Curran, so he is mixing things up. The forecast is a lot better from around 4pm, so there should still be scope for a shorter game. “It’s also a cause of much consternation at the mo with the powers that be, given it takes about five minutes to walk in and throw half a dozen warm up pitches on the mound. 21st over: South Africa 119-2 (de Kock 69, Markram 7) There was one ball remaining in the 21st over when rain stopped play. The finest exemplar of the power of the bullpen is here ( slightly whiffy language).

The leg-spinner responded by suckering the in-form Van der Dussen in a game of cat and mouse, which concluded with him clumping a catch to Bairstow on the midwicket fence. He's on to 37 and England will want to see the back of him soon. 12:22 p.m: In the 20 deliveries since Van der Dussen left us, South Africa have not hit a boundary, with Rashid and Curran putting the breaks on nicely. 10:10 a.m: Last time England were at Headingley, we found Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root in swashbuckling form en route to dominant seven-wicket win over New Zealand.
