Tory leadership race continues after Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak ... (The Guardian)

Keir Starmer has said a Labour Government would fix “broken” water and energy markets through regulation before nationalising the railways because of ...

Do get in touch with anything we’ve missed at [email protected]. The report, published by centre-right think tank Public Policy Projects (PPP), comes as the Conservative leadership debate focuses on tax cuts. This morning, politicians have been sharing their views. Meanwhile, MP David Davis dismissed the suggestion that Rishi Sunak was “mansplaining” to Liz Truss as “spin”. He told Sky News: “Sometimes it’s important to intervene in debates.” Simon Clarke, chief secretary to the Treasury and a supporter of Liz Truss, has said the 7% mortgage interest rates figure brought up in the debate by Rishi Sunak “is not part of Liz Truss’s plans”. We’ve got to recognise that after the pandemic we’re in a different situation financially to the situation that we were in before, and we want a responsible government that says if we’re going to do something we will tell you how we’re going to pay for it.

The Foreign Secretary looked startled while she was mid-sentence during a live TV debate with Tory leadership contender Rishi Sunak.

That's the best way to pay down our debt." A recession would be a disaster, it would be a disaster for people who are homeowners. "Less investment will mean fewer jobs, fewer opportunities, lower wages and lower productivity in the future. She said: "Let's be clear, his (Rishi Sunak's) plan is to raise taxes. We apologise to our viewers and listeners." Really sorry that such a good debate had to end.

Tory hopefuls TV debate dramatically halted after host Kate McCann ... (Evening Standard)

The Tory leadership debate dramatically went off-air after a presenter fainted in the TV studio.

“Really sorry that such a good debate had to end. “Under Rishi’s plan we will end up raising corporation tax to the same level it is in France, more than 10 percentage points higher than it is in Ireland.” The former chancellor added: “As we think about ‘well, how do we fix this problem, how do we fund the things, the public services that we rely on’, is it reasonable to ask the biggest companies in the country to pay a bit more tax? Before the debate stopped Sunak said it was “entirely reasonable” to ask the largest companies to pay “a bit more” tax because they received taxpayer-funded support during the pandemic. TalkTV has apologised to viewers and said in a statement: “Kate McCann fainted on air tonight and although she is fine, the medical advice was that we shouldn’t continue with the debate. “We are working hard to fix the issue and will return to normal programming soon.”
