Mercury Prize: All you need to know about this year's nominees (BBC News)

Harry Styles, Sam Fender and Little Simz are among the artists competing for this year's Mercury Prize, arguably British music's most prestigious award.

And when it all threatens to get too heavy, the band sweeten the pill with a series of sweetly addictive pop melodies. [ Under The Radar] The end result is an album that's both socially compelling and primed for a stadium singalong. But there's an undercurrent of empathy, especially on Tall Poppies, which tells the story of a handsome football prodigy who never pursued his dream. [ The Forty-Five] Their second album is appropriately in-your-face, especially in the lyrics, which rip into the racist and sexist critics who've questioned their place in rock music. [ Under The Radar] Crookes' smoky, jazz-tinged delivery has been compared to Amy Winehouse - and for once the comparison is earned. The scat singing and synth horns on Music For A Sushi Restaurant capture his quirky charisma; while Boyfriends' critique of toxic masculinity is the song every girl wishes Harry would sing to her while he painted their toenails. [ The Guardian] The result is a mysterious, brooding album that embraces everything from Celtic folk to Americana, anchored by Buckley's bewitching vocals. [ The Skinny]

Florence Pugh worked with Harry Styles on Don't Worry Darling, but how was it?

We do know some things about Don't Worry Darling, but the mystery behind the psychological thriller is one of its most intriguing aspects. She said "it was a joy to walk into the hair and makeup trailer every day" and noted "the way that everything looks delicious and golden" in the footage we've seen has been awesome. The "As It Was" singer has appeared in films before, but he's still mostly known as a singer, and him taking on a leading role in Don't Worry Darling has been a big topic of conversation.

Mercury prize: Sam Fender, Harry Styles and Self Esteem lead pack ... (The Guardian)

Women including Little Simz and Jessie Buckley dominate this year's cohort for the best British album of the year, which falters on recent diversity gains.

That serves as proof that British and Irish music thrives during unsettled periods in history, with the albums chosen covering everything from imaginative pop to pioneering rap to Cornish language folk-rock. Accolades such as the Mercury prize “help artists in a continually shrinking financial landscape”, said Smith. “It shafts more of a spotlight – that you clearly need – on them. “We’ve seen so many bands that we admire get nominated for this award over the years,” Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers told the Guardian. “It’s just so surreal to now be one of the nominees. They’re joined by Leeds four-piece Yard Act, whose debut album The Overload runs on “skittery-but-muscular post-punk funk: punchy disco drums, stabbing guitar, the melodies driven by the bass”, wrote Petridis. “It all helps doesn’t it?” singer James Smith told the Guardian of their nomination. “It means everything to us,” said bassist Georgia South. “When you start you think, we’re two kids who wanna rock out and make music, but the more we went along and realised how much diversity is missing in the music scene and the heavy music scene. London rapper Kojey Radical’s nominated debut album, Reason to Smile, was nearly a decade in the making. Forest Floor also reveals the inspiration of Scottish folk music – another genre historically short on love from the Mercury committee. The Glasgow and Edinburgh jazz festivals gave me my start – both really amazing places.” Guitarist Amy Love told the Guardian they were glad to have been nominated for their second album, which they recorded during lockdown. Self Esteem (AKA Rebecca Lucy Taylor) receives her first nomination for her second album, Prioritise Pleasure, which topped the Guardian’s album of the year list in 2021. Simz leads a pack dominated by women, with seven of the 12 albums by female solo artists or mixed groups. Little Simz is the only artist here with Mercury history: her third album, Grey Area, was nominated in 2019.

However you feel about Harry Styles' Mercury nomination, he won't ... (Gigwise)

But does it go against the ethos of the awards? | Gigwise />

When it comes to winning, my money this year is on Self Esteem’s extraordinary sophomore album Prioritise Pleasure. For Harry’s House on the other hand, it really is the taking part that counts. The one thing all of these albums have in common is that none of them won. Since it began in 1992, the prize has been awarded to artists from virtually every genre, and in fairness many of them have been up and coming acts whose sales have been massively helped by the win, with artists such as James Blake and the XX receiving stratospheric sales increases after winning the prize in the early stages of their career. Maybe some pop music snobs will now give Harry’s House a listen based on its nomination, but the effect is likely to be negligible. A lot of the complaints appear to centre on the idea that Styles’ nomination somehow goes against the perceived ethos of the Mercury Prize, which is ostensibly to provide exposure to innovative new acts rather than celebrating established ones. Well, while some have celebrated Styles’ inclusion on the 2022 list, some have been vocal in their criticisms of the decision.
