Commonwealth Games 'far from irrelevant', insist organisers (The Guardian)

The CGF insists the event is thriving as athletes prepare to compete in Birmingham, and also said it was working with Tom Daley following his condemnation ...

The atmosphere of the Commonwealth Games is always notably different to other events. With thousands of athletes having arrived in Birmingham, the sport should at least be enticing. According to Dame Louise Martin, the president of the CGF, they are working with Daley. We just had a general assembly, we heard from Birmingham, we heard from 2026, we announced that we’re going to have the Youth Games in Trinidad next year. Her organisation has tried to tackle that by initiating the first Commonwealth esports championships. Speaking before the opening ceremony, Katie Sadleir, the CEO of the Commonwealth Games Federation, was adamant that the event has not become irrelevant.

Commonwealth Games 2022: how Birmingham is becoming the ... (The Conversation UK)

Hosting the Games has seem Birmingham dotted with new infrastructure and amenities. But the city's pioneering transformation began over a 100 years ago.

But it should not distract from the city’s innovative and experimental approach to creating healthy neighbourhoods by achieving a new kind of balance between profitability and sustainability. Further funding from the West Midland Combined Authority and Birmingham City Council will top this up to £1.3 billion. Public transport is set to increasingly displace the use of private cars, thereby reducing air pollution and traffic noise. Birmingham City Council still retains the freeholds for most of the land in the city centre today. This includes the ability to focus on enhancing the quality of the built environment. These interventions include the £705 million redevelopment of New Street railway station, completed in 2015. The city council was behind this £500m, 1.8 million sq foot office-led mixed commercial scheme and stands to benefit from additional business rates and ground rents. The city’s gradual restructuring of its economy has seen major corporate players consider the city as a suitable business location. Our research shows that this was, in fact, a Birmingham innovation. Other major corporate players have followed suit including HS2, Goldman Sachs and Microland, the Indian IT infrastructure company. The Games will thus leave a permanent legacy of their own. Cities are places to live and work.

Commonwealth Games 2022: A history of the Birmingham accent ... (iNews)

The distinctive Birmingham accent has long been judged badly with its speakers suffering from bias, but it has deep historical roots and is now being given ...

In a region where cultural identity centred for so long around pride in the strength of local industry, the closure of so many factories in recent years means people are now “reclaiming an identity through voice. “We don’t big ourselves up, it’s to the detriment of our city.” Analysing the Vernon Manuscript – the largest surviving late-medieval English text, written in the West Midlands dialect in around 1400 – they recognised that the typical local pronunciation of “you” may originate from the Middle English word “ow”. In 1960 it was voted bottom for “prestige and pleasantness” in an academic study of British people’s attitudes to 16 different accents. The novelist Maeve Clarke, another member of the creative team, says the accent is “ part of who we are”. “You will hear this wonderful accent wherever you go in the Games,” he said.

Commonwealth Games 2022 sees royal family face watershed test ... (iNews)

This year's Games in Birmingham comes against a backdrop of Commonwealth nations looking to remove the Queen as head of state.

“It’s very easy to look at the Commonwealth and see negatives, a waywardness in terms of its overall purpose and direction, but also see it as a reconstructed empire. The Commonwealth has been Queen Elizabeth II’s great project. That can help us imagine it and think about it in a more positive way? “We know that Charles is not as wedded to the Commonwealth as his mother. “What I have found quite reassuring about the Birmingham Commonwealth Games is the orchestrators of the events appear to be using it as an opportunity to celebrate the diversity of Birmingham.” Although there will be a strong royal presence in Birmingham throughout the Games, the Queen – who is patron of the Commonwealth Games and retains a close association to them – won’t attend in person after a number of mobility issues.

The 'love letter' to Birmingham also centred a message condemning anti-gay laws in Commonwealth countries.

Yes, people want independence but people still want to be a part of the Commonwealth Games. A city that famously boasts it doesn’t boast, might just have something to crow about in the days ahead... They only stepped in to stage these Games when South Africa’s Durban pulled out because of cost concerns. If you go into the Village and see the athletes together, it’s family, that’s how we speak and how we see each other. For too many years they’ve been held together by one woman, now 96, and this sports event. Birmingham’s quirky first-night show won’t have done any harm in that scrap.

Commonwealth Games 2022 schedule: Day-by-day guide to ... (iNews)

Alex Yee has already won gold for Team England, but there is plenty more action on the way across 11 days in Birmingham.

The world’s best bowler in both one-day internationals and T20s, Sophie Ecclestone will be key to England’s hopes of winning the inaugural Commonwealth women’s cricket title. The Northern Ireland gymnast was almost prevented from defending his crown, initially excluded from the games by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) because he has represented Ireland in major competitions. Few would have predicted that result in an event where Australia and New Zealand had contested every previous final, but if England are to repeat the feat, they will need more heroics from Housby, who plays her club netball in Australia. The correct answer is Alex ‘Tattie’ Marshall, a five-time lawn bowls gold medallist who heads to Birmingham 2022 for his seventh Commonwealth Games, having overhauled Wells as Scotland’s greatest four years ago. The Team Scotland athlete now faces the not inconsiderable challenge of backing up that performance in Birmingham as he looks to upgrade the bronze he won in Gold Coast. She now heads to Birmingham to compete for Team Wales on the road as the mother of a four-month-old baby boy. Netball, cricket and hockey finals within a matter of hours promise an unforgettable day of team sport. Saturday 6 August: A massive middle-distance day at the Alexander Stadium as newly-crowned world champion Jake Wightman takes on all comers in the morning 1500m and Keely Hodgkinson tops the bill in the evening’s 800m. World mountain bike champion Evie Richards, from the Malvern Hills, will be favourite for gold in her own backyard and all-conquering Kiwi Paul Coll is the star attraction in squash finals. You don’t need to look far for inspiration as refugee weightlifter Cyrille Tchatchet and Craig Bowler – a para-athlete by name and by nature, who bowls with one arm and neither leg – go for gold. The pool is graced by Maisie Summers-Newton, Australia’s five-time Olympic champion Emma McKeon and her pop star boyfriend Cody Simpson with his 4.6m Instagram followers in tow – surely the most here. Friday 29 July: Triathlon takes over bucolic Sutton Park where England’s Georgia Taylor-Brown battles Bermudan Flora Duffy. They went one-two in Tokyo and occupy those same spots in world rankings.
