It was Charlene's wedding dress from Neighbours. Backlit and plumped up in a corner while the classic Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan episode played in the ...
Neighbours became, in my mind, the pseudo-documentary on which I based one of the key decisions of my life. I still have days like that, wherever I am in the world. When I recently shared the photo on Facebook, I embellished the post with what I thought was an obvious lie: “He had been in the soap for seven episodes as waiter Jason Byrne in Mr Udagawa’s hotel complex.” Despite the ludicrousness of the claim, some of my friends believed it. Their wedding – along with all the 80s frills Minogue wore – is a reminder of when I needed to believe there was something else. As we prepared for the move, I sorted through some of my partner’s old Polaroids from the 80s. The wedding of the century. I was married in a five-minute ceremony, wearing a Stetson, before heading to the pub. The media in the 90s was littered with Australians. They were everywhere. I was friends with lots of them; I married one. And the echoes of Erinsborough were in my brain. And there I was … sobbing at a wedding dress in a museum in Hobart, Tasmania. I hate weddings. This was the meringue that I believe sealed my destiny.
Past Ramsay Street stars reunite with present cast to end the show the way it began: not with a massive explosion, but with a heartfelt celebration of ...
I was prepared – nay, eager – to be cynical about the end of the Erinsborough era. There is a feeling of calm and community. And so Neighbours ends the way it began: not with a fire or a tornado or an affair, but with its people. This is the scene where we’ll relive 37 years of love, tragedy, sadness and friendship. Donna (Margot Robbie) in particular doesn’t even seem to be in character as she gushes about what the street and its people have meant to her. Old fans of the show will know this can only mean one thing: Scott (Jason Donovan) and Charlene (our Kylie) are back. No one’s home because they’re all witnessing Toadie’s latest wife agree to her own demise (he drove the first one into the sea, another was a sham, and he lost his soulmate to cancer), so Charlene decides to break in for old time’s sake. The casting and story choices in the final episode are an effort to rectify this – but one wonders what a show so significant could have achieved by prioritising a more representative neighbourhood, and telling other stories? As expected, many of them “return” to give Toadie their best for his new marriage, as a floating head on a Zoom call: a tried and tested soap trope that’s never felt more timely. It’s has also been justifiably criticised – by commentators and the actors themselves – for its poor treatment and representation of marginalised groups, including people of colour and the queer community. Neighbours stitched itself into the tapestry of our lives. The street is disbanding.
Hollywood didn't beckon for all residents of Ramsay Street. Some of them went on surprising career paths instead.
Ritters joined the show when she was eight and left when she was 15. Since 2015, she has lived in Berlin, working as a reporter and anchor for Deutsche Welle, most recently covering the Ukrainian war. He was Charles Widmore on Lost. He was the vice-president on 24. He was on The West Wing, and Ugly Betty, and NCIS, and CSI, and JAG. He was even in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Dale has perhaps the best-furrowed field of any Neighbours actor. A decade ago, he was also a YouTuber; he uploaded a video where an alien welcomes you to the Galactic Federation of Light. He took the show to court.

"Because of Neighbours, it's where I ended up. But a recent trip to the Neighbours set was a particularly memorable day - seeing the doorway of Lassiters, inside the Waterhole, and chatting with the actors who play Paul and Harold. "I don't know how I am going to say goodbye. You would sometimes go to his swimming pool, he would sometimes come to your swimming pool. You could call him by his first name. "We always tried to show we were wallowing in the sun, getting a suntan. I'd like to think I'm going to hang the suit up and walk away, but I think it'll take a bit of a while to shake off." Smith - who also wrote episodes but never those including his own character - said the show's success in the UK partly was down to the portrayal of a different way of life. Stefan Dennis, who has played Paul Robinson since the show started in 1985, told the BBC that it was going to take a while to "say goodbye to Paul". Hundreds of fans gathered to watch on a big screen in Melbourne - the city where the show is set and produced.

Consider this my petition for a streamer to do a UK Gold and pick it up from the beginning. This was simply an opportunity to reflect and honour the people who have called Ramsay Street home. And who better than its matriarch Susan to do the honours? In the episodes building up to this, there have also been flashbacks to the old days as well. Shane Ramsay, one of the Neighbours originals, seemingly because he's a man with two cars. It's no spoiler to say that Scott and Charlene are back, driving into Ramsay Street blasting out a song that will no doubt fill Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan fans with glee. There's something really lovely about seeing so many stars past and present appearing on screen to be part of this final goodbye. So this truly is the end of an era. Brad and Beth! Phoebe and Todd! Libby and Drew! And I'm sure I'm not the only one who used to be convinced that Jim Robinson (Alan Dale, now of The OC and Lost fame) sang the theme tune. And you invite back the big-hitters. Back in the 1980s and '90s, Neighbours was event TV. Scott and Charlene's wedding, Bouncer's dream, of course, but also so many other relationships, love triangles and tragedies. But while growing up and getting on with adult life meant we kicked our daily 5.35pm habit a while back, it still provided comfort TV on those days we happened to be at home and free to drop in.

As Ramsay Street closes its doors, Caroline Frost reflects on how Britain became good friends with the Aussie soap.
The Aussies’ love affair with Britain – the motherland, as they still call it, fondly and ironically in equal measure – existed years before the arrival of a TV soap. I think I lasted a whole two weekends when I moved to Melbourne in 2006 before finding my way there – and Neighbours nights are standard in the pubs of St Kilda, a few miles away. Swimming pools in back gardens were luxuries of which most Brits could only dream, but presented in wholesome, everyday fashion a million miles from the Colbys and the Carringtons. We all became surprisingly versed in Australian geography, nodding knowledgably when Madge disappeared to Queensland and Helen Daniels made one of her surprisingly frequent trips to the Bungle Bungles. Words such as “barbie”, “dag” and the family-friendly “rack off” entered the local vernacular. TV critics queued up to deride Neighbours as cheap, wobbling wallpaper rubbish, but Fleet Street couldn’t ignore its mass-market appeal, and I’m convinced it was no coincidence that Sky TV came along so soon after – launched by Rupert Murdoch, an Australian no less, the master of recognising what works. A less well-known but even more delightfully random aspect of the case is that the Beeb had only ever alighted upon Neighbours (which began in March 1985 Down Under) because they wanted the Going for Gold format from Australian producer Reg Grundy, and he had insisted they buy something else from the catalogue as well.
Neighbours launched the careers of some of Australia's biggest talents, from Margot Robbie and Kylie Minogue to Natalie Imbruglia and Delta Goodrem.

Even though the show is coming to an end, we feel that it should be kept going in some way as a school for young actors. All us oldies, the ones who were together in the show, we’ve all been together. ‘I don’t think anybody wants to be around for a good few hours then!’ I’m a very lucky person that I got to do it.’ I was working with one particular person who I haven’t seen for a very long time.’ ‘I think it took quite a long time for everybody to get their head around the fact of it,’ she said.

Everybody is there (Charlene and Scott! Jane and Mike! Harold! Toadie! The Kennedys!), and nobody seems to have aged a day since arriving on the street. The Canadian queens have had time to size each other up and this week it is double trouble as they must demonstrate those all‑important lip-syncing skills in pairs. Even if you haven’t watched the teatime soap in more than a decade (ahem), tuning in to say goodbye to Ramsay Street with this hour-long special is a must.
Ahead of the Neighbours finale, Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan discuss returning as Scott and Charlene.
To be a part of that legacy and see people’s careers develop and project Australia to the rest of the world. And of course friendships and the fact ‘plain Jane super brain’ and Mike have a storyline coming up, I’m incredibly excited. We are quite a way from going to shopping centres (appearances) and all the things we used to do, the memories are coming back – the pigeon boxes, our scripts, the early morning calls, shooting at Lassiters, all of us straight out of school, just kids and a lot of life has happened since then. Neighbours wrapping up has put a completely different spin on all of it – it opened the door for this to happen. It’s not lost on us in terms of what this show has given us, the cast, writers, directors, the country, the way it has portrayed Australians around the world, it changed a lot of things for a lot of people – now it’s time to scream about it. And something you have to ‘scream’ about the moment, and this is one of them, we’re very aware of the significance.

Longtime Neighbours fans will remember Sonya Mitchell was a dog trainer for Toadie Rebecchi who went on to become his second wife.
She said: "At the end of 2017 Neighbours was at a point where it was negotiating its future (following Australian broadcaster Network Ten going into administration), and there had to be changes budget-wise for it to move forward in every department, and I was part of that. I feel death was the only option in order to be true to them. Check out more of our Soaps coverage or visit our TV Guide to see what's on tonight.
Takaya spoke to Metro.co.uk ahead of Neighbours' untimely end, revealing that the soap has saved people's lives.
I’ll probably have a trip to the UK and to LA. Seeing my family in Sydney and Brisbane is definitely on the cards because we haven’t been able to see them much in the last six years, and especially the last couple of years because of Covid. The biggest thing I’ll miss is the fortune of being given a character and storylines that mean something to people. I’ve been so lucky to have so many things that mean so much to so many people, it’s extraordinary. It’s easy to brand the show as a silly soap, and sure we can have ‘silly’ moments – but life can be silly and outrageous! I think in the last ten years, the era of Jason Herbison, Neighbours has become a frontrunner in terms of diversity of all aspects and representation – whether that be sexuality, gender, race. I literally have messages on my phone from fans to say that the storylines we’ve told have saved their lives, and it shows the importance of what we do. – but ultimately, at the core of it, the things that have been done on the show have been so much more important than people think. It’s an ideal storyline to show the ultimate arc for David, coming to some sort of a close, in a way. I know that, with the show ending, they wanted David and Aaron to have a happy ending. I think the last few weeks would’ve been a lot harder, if I didn’t have something that, psychologically, I had to delve quite far into and get excited about. Whereas this is the kind of the first storyline where it’s just been a pure joyride of a full-on crazy rollercoaster of a storyline! You might see someone staring off into the distance for a second, but they can only sit in that for a second as they have to get back into their jobs.

Neighbours is more than just a TV show – it is a source of comfort and entertainment for generations of fans who have watched it for decades – it is one of the most loved TV shows in the UK and brings lots of viewers from all backgrounds to Channel 5’s catalogue of channels,’ the petition reads. Gracious, generous and energetically invested in his role, the Hollywood actor stole the last episodes – and invited us to reflect on the passage of time.
At the risk of overstating it, because this is afternoon soap opera and not a Guillermo del Toro flick, he invited the audience to reflect on their own passage of time. He wasn’t a pixelated face on a TV screen. The promised cameos turned out to each be a handful of seconds in a video montage – which, in fairness, is what we expected, and we still went “LANCE!!!” when he came on screen. Perhaps it’s obvious that an Emmy-award winning actor would put in a strong performance, but it seemed there was more to it than that. It was gracious and generous. In this sea of characters we once knew, one made a particular splash.

Find out if Australian actor Chris Hemsworth appeared in Neighbours before landing roles in Home & Away, Star Trek, Thor and The Avengers.
Here’s a fun fact for you: While Chris had but a bit part in Neighbours, his younger brother Liam Hemsworth and older brother Luke Hemsworth both had bigger roles on the show. Chris has since starred in a host of movies, including The Cabin in the Woods, Snow White and The Huntsman, Vacation, Ghostbusters, In The Heart of the Sea and Spiderhead. The year was 2002, and an 18-year-old Chris appeared in a single episode of Neighbours (episode 4,069 to get specific) as a one-off character called Jamie Kane.
