HIGHWAYS ENGLAND has warned commuters to avoid the M6 after a police incident brought traffic to a standstill.

Replying to a motorist asking why all the lanes have been closed, a spokesperson said: "It's police led so you will need to take your complaint up with them. It will take time for traffic to start easing but all lanes are running." Further updates from police to follow."

A large stretch of the M6 motorway has been closed throughout the day with major delays expected into the evening after reports of a vehicle fire.

Traffic has been stopped on the M6 southbound and M55 eastbound after a lorry fire today (Friday 29 July).

The southbound carriage of the M6 is shut between J32 for Preston and J31A for Longridge whilst recovery teams work at the scene alongside police and fire crews. A full closure of the southbound carriageway was put in place at 6.50am and was still in place gone 2pm. Fire crews are working at the scene where a lorry caught fire at around 6.15am, between junctions 32 at Fulwood and 31a in Preston.
