Derby County 1-0 Oxford: Conor Hourihane seals win for Rams (Sky Sports)

Highlights of the Sky Bet League Two clash between Derby County and Oxford United.

Oxford went close in the 58th minute when Billy Bodin's drive was tipped over but Eastwood made a brilliant save three minutes later to turn behind a Collins volley. Derby responded when James Collins had a shot deflected behind before Nathaniel Mendez-Laing burst through on the right in the 38th minute but Simon Eastwood came out to save. Oxford had chances in front of a 31,000 crowd before Hourihane's quality finish gave Derby victory in the club's first competitive match since exiting administration at the start of the month.

Match Report Derby County 10 Oxford United (Derby County Football Club)

Derby County kicked off their 2022/23 Sky Bet League One campaign with a 1-0 win against Oxford United at Pride Park Stadium.

Louie Sibley’s introduction on the hour mark was a big moment in the game. But, in the early stages of the game, it was a player who had risen through the youth ranks at Moor Farm which stood out both for his attacking and defensive impact. Jason Knight played the ball over the top for Nathaniel Mendez-Laing to race on to, he picked out a cross to Barkhuizen who was rising at the back post. A major moment in the club’s history. Friday 1st July 2022 marked a huge moment in the club’s history as Clowes Development (Ltd) completed their purchase of the football club and took it out of administration. Docked 21 points for entering administration and for historical breaches of profitability and sustainability rules, the Rams suffered relegation to League One for the first time in 36 years.

CONOR Hourihane's late strike denied Oxford United a point at Derby County on the opening day of the Sky Bet League One season.

James Collins took on Moore and saw his shot deflected into the side-netting, before Nathaniel Mendez-Laing got in behind following a quick free-kick. The U’s lacked the attacking firepower on the bench for one last roll of the dice and they were unable to create another chance in the closing stages. Findlay had been impressive on debut but his pass out of the back went loose and the hosts capitalised, with Hourihane curling past Eastwood and into the bottom corner. United looked solid with the two holding midfielders, while Findlay seemed to be first to every corner, but Derby had two chances towards the end of the half. Matty Taylor turned his man and only had Wildsmith to beat, but he struggled to get the ball out of his feet under pressure and fired wide. James Henry made his first start of 2022 on the right of the front three, with Marcus Browne in the middle, while Findlay was handed a competitive debut and Simon Eastwood got the nod in goal.

Hourihane's winner for Derby against Oxford provides relief after ... (The Guardian)

Conor Hourihane capped his debut for Derby with a second-half winner in their opening 1-0 victory at home to Oxford in League One.

Another symbol of the togetherness born from the chaos was in the dressing room at full-time. Rosenior is unfazed about having to make the big calls – on his first day he released a player whose kids attend the same school as his – but there is no such thing as a selection headache just yet, a thin squad meaning the team picks itself. Clowes’s first Derby game was against Nottingham Forest at the Baseball Ground in 1978 but few have been as anticipated as this.

Three Talking Points as Oxford Lose at Derby (Vitalfootball)

Oxford United kicked off the 2022/23 season with a defeat at recently relegated Derby County.

As far as debuts go, this was a near-perfect display from the Scottish defender. Not only did he win almost everything that came his way in the air, but he also threw his body on the line and blocked several attempts from the hosts. Billy Bodin and James Henry began the match as the widemen, with Josh Murphy on the bench and Jodi Jones not in the squad following his late arrival to the squad.

Sibley is fighting hard to claim a regular place in a Derby team that has significantly boosted its attacking options in the summer, but he did his cause no harm at all. But the reality is that he should regard it as a compliment to his ability. He may have had to sacrifice a season ticket in the north stand for a seat in the boardroom, but by rescuing Derby he has left them reinvigorated, refreshed and relishing a new era under his leadership. The price he will pay as a result is that he will be singled out for special attention. Indeed, you got the feeling that no matter what the result, Derby already felt like winners before a ball was even kicked. Everywhere you looked there was no shortage of passion or love gushing from the terraces as Derby fans bellowed from their hymn sheets to create a crackling atmosphere.

Regardless of whether he goes or not, a couple of new options will be needed in this position with Byrne unavailable at this point. And unsurprisingly, he gave the game a much-needed boost when he came on, proving to be a game-changer for the East Midlands side when he came on for Smith in the 60th minute. The Rams will be keen to strengthen in multiple areas before the window closes, with another goalkeeper and a right-back or two just a couple of key requirements before the summer window closes.

Birmingham City eyeing up second Derby County transfer swoop (Football League World)

Derby County midfielder Jason Knight has emerged on the transfer radar of Championship outfit Birmingham City, Football Insider have reported.

He started the first match of the 2022-23 season for the Rams at right-back in a 1-0 victory over Oxford United this past weekend, but with a month of the transfer window still left to go, he could still be set to exit County with his contract set to expire next summer. And the Poland international could be joined by Knight if John Eustace gets his way, with the new Blues head coach believed to be a big fan of the 21-year-old, having coached him in the Republic of Ireland setup. The Blues have already raided the Rams for one player this week, with Krystian Bielik returning to St. Andrew’s for a second stint after completing a loan move from Pride Park for the duration of the 2022-23 season.

Derby County weighing up transfer move for Swansea City man (Football League World)

League One outfit Derby County are keen on luring Swansea City forward Kyle Joseph to Pride Park, according to this morning's update from Alan Nixon.

They may benefit from bringing in another addition or two in the forward department though if they are to let Joseph go – because a shortage of attacking firepower could prove to be costly for them in their quest to push for a top-six spot. For the Swans, another loan deal could be ideal to give him one last chance to impress, because there’s a real chance he could become a useful asset for them in the future despite not being ready for action in the second tier just yet. The Rams aren’t likely to be splashing the cash, so they could potentially be aiming for a loan deal at this stage with the East Midlands side having four more loan spots to fill in their matchday squad.
