First wife's resting-place in Trump's New Jersey golf course might benefit ex-husband's long-held tax planning purposes.

Trump has kept silent about his plans for how the “Eternal Donald” will be commemorated in the earthly realm. But Trump, true to form, had not at that time settled on a course of action. Plans then filed with local and state authorities listed a proposal for a pair of graveyards – one for the family, another with 284 plots for sale. US public radio station NPR reported in 2012 under the online headline “Fairway to Heaven” that Trump planned to build himself a mausoleum on the property, prompting some local objections. “As a tax researcher, I was skeptical of rumors Trump buried his ex-wife in that sad little plot of dirt on his Bedminster, NJ golf course just for tax breaks. Harrington later tweeted the full New Jersey tax code for cemetery land.

Under New Jersey law, land being used for cemetery purposes is exempt from a whole raft of taxes.

While registering the golf course as a cemetery would exempt it from taxes, the former president already found a way to slash his tax bill for the New Jersey club by registering it as a farm, the Huffington Post reported in 2019. Trump himself has previously expressed wishes to be buried at his New Jersey golf club, telling the New York Post in 2007 that he wanted to be laid to rest in the “beautiful land” of Bedminster. Brooke Harrington, a tax researcher and professor of sociology at Dartmouth, said in a tweet on Sunday that using the golf course as a cemetery was “a trifecta of tax avoidance.”

The mother of three of the ex-president’s children — Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump — died July 14 at 73 years old; officials said it was an accidental death from blunt impact injuries to her torso in her New York home. Tax documents from the Trump Family Trust published by ProPublica also show plans to designate a property in Hackettstown, N.J. — 20 miles from Bedminster — as a non-profit cemetery company. Insider reports New Jersey state tax code states any land that is dedicated to cemetery purposes is exempt from all taxes, rates, and assessments.

The Trump family's course is in an area with sky-high land taxes, but exemptions are made for cemetery land.

US public radio station NPR reported in 2012 under the online headline “Fairway to Heaven” that Trump planned to build himself a mausoleum on the property, prompting some local objections. It came after photos of Ivana Trump's modest single plot near the first tee on social media spilled into questions about why Donald Trump would choose that spot. “Folks…it’s a trifecta of tax avoidance.

Trump further amended the proposal to include a 284-plot cemetery, which would have gravesites available for sale. He later amended his proposal to create a cemetery on the property to suggest building more than 1,000 possible graves. Trump has planned for at least a decade to build variations of a cemetery on the course.

She tweeted, “As a tax researcher, I was skeptical of rumors Trump buried his ex-wife in that sad little plot of dirt on his Bedminster, NJ golf course just for tax breaks. The college professor also added some personal thoughts to her thread that vocalized what many people were thinking after seeing such a sad grave alone on a golf course. Thanks to New Jersey’s unique tax code, “land dedicated to cemetery purposes owned by any person shall be exempt from all taxes, rates or assessments.” So by burying Ivana on the golf course, the former president can take advantage of that cemetery loophole — and make it look like he took care of his first wife at the end of her life.

Why Ivana Trump Was Buried at Bedminster Golf Course: 3 Theories (New York Magazine)

With his ex-wife Ivana Trump's burial in a simple grave, Donald Trump's 15-year dream of turning his Bedminster, New Jersey, property into a cemetery has ...

“It’s never something you like to think about, but it makes sense,” Trump told the New York Post during his first attempt to make Bedminster a cemetery in 2007. And the Trump family has definitely been pursuing the tax advantages of cemetery ownership. Over the weekend, this tweet from Brooke Harrington, a professor of sociology at Dartmouth, sparked speculation that Bedminster’s real appeal as a graveyard lies in New Jersey tax law. The company’s filing with the state said Trump “specifically chose this property for his final resting place as it is his favorite property.” That’s because Trump had already found a way to lower his taxes on that wooded, largely unused parcel. The grave is in a place where golfers would not see it as they tee off for a round of golf. There is, however, ample evidence that Donald Trump thinks Bedminster is a phenomenal place to be laid to rest. While Ivana maintained a friendship with her ex-husband through her final days, and her daughter, Ivanka, was married at the club, it does not appear that Ivana ever publicly praised the property. Locals balked at the proposal, which they deemed gaudy, and Trump withdrew the plan. Photos taken by The Post Thursday show Trump’s grave alone against a bucolic scenery of trees and shrubbery. Many found the decision to bury Ivana at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster puzzling. Ivana Trump, former president Donald Trump’s first wife, died on July 14 at the age of 73, owing to injuries she suffered in an accidental fall at her Upper East Side townhouse.

Ivana Trump's burial place is now garnering suspicion that its location could mean tax breaks for her ex-husband, former President Donald Trump.

Trump appears to have been trying to get some form of cemetery on the golf club’s grounds for more than a decade. Trump later withdrew that plan, and came back with another to build a cemetery with about 1,000 graves, according to a 2017 Washington Post report. Trump National Golf Club comes in at more than 500 acres, while the plot where Ivana Trump is buried reportedly measures about 1.5 acres, according to the Daily Mail. Now, due to the intricacies of New Jersey’s tax laws and how they apply to “cemetery companies,” some say the course could be getting a tax break. Those include property taxes “on lands dedicated to cemetery purposes,” income taxes, sales and use taxes, business taxes, and inheritance taxes. Rumors abound about the New Jersey gravesite of former U.S. President Donald Trump's first wife.

Furthermore, given the photographs, and an acknowledgement from a Trump representative regarding the location of her grave while denying the rumors connecting it to tax laws, we rate the overall claim as “True.” Helmore, Edward. “Will Ivana Help Donald Trump with Tax Breaks from beyond the Grave?” The Guardian, 31 July 2022. The gravesite has been inserted into a wider shot of a golf cart on a golf course fairway. According to the code, a cemetery company is exempt from paying real property taxes, income taxes, sales and use taxes, business taxes, and inheritance taxes; cemetery trust funds are also exempt from taxes. The Huffington Post reported in 2019 that he had saved around $88,000 that year. According to the report, she was buried in a place that was not visible to golfers as they tee off for a round of golf. A 2017 Washington Post report revealed how he had been trying to convince local authorities to let him build cemeteries at the golf course since 2007. It’s clear that this photograph is fake when it’s compared to the pictures published in the New York Post article.
