Bowled over: How we learned to love The Hundred (Nation.Cymru)

With Welsh Fire in action tonight against Southern Brave as The Hundred returns for a second year, we revisit this piece written by David Owens last August ...

It has blown the cobwebs away, opening cricket up to a far wider audience, encouraging kids to explore what the game has to offer. The Hundred has also placed the women’s game squarely on an even footing with their male counterparts. That said I could murder a bag of Hula Hoops and my desire for Tyrrells kettle chips has risen exponentially during the last month. It has allowed the women the opportunity to play in front of the largest crowds they’ve ever encountered, acting as a wonderful showcase for their skills and no doubt inspiring a new generation of girls. Each team’s shirt bearing the logo of a snack brand – has come as a welcome relief from the force-fed diet of gambling adverts that are so unavoidable at football matches. How do you sum up The Hundred – the new limited overs competition that has added a splash of colour to the cricket season.

Tickets for The Hundred are selling fast! If they were to win it this time round, there may not be a dry eye in the house. A large percentage of that side are over for the tournament. I liked them last year too and the women were one game away from doing the double. I'm looking forward to watching the world-class, world-beaters add to The Hundred. I like both of the Southern Brave squads. Under Meg Lanning, you could argue, it's the greatest white-ball cricket side there has been in the women's game. It's a great opportunity for him, if he has another fabulous tournament of smashing it everywhere, as the likes of Mott and Rob Key will be watching on. It's an opportunity to either regain form or, if you're on the periphery, to showcase your skills. The atmosphere was just phenomenal, and it had different feel about it. That's the important stuff. There are two World Cups coming up.

James Vince hits unbeaten 71 as Southern Brave begin men's Hundred campaign with easy victory over Welsh Fire.

They look like the team to beat. Southern Brave were fantastic from ball one tonight. On working in tandem with promising 17-year-old spinner Rehan Ahmed: "I have taken him under my wing a little having been a teacher, although Rehan does not need much help. A real good team performance and James Vince made it look easy. Southern Brave's Jake Lintott speaking on BBC Two: " A great win. "It doesn't feel that easy at the moment! "I don't think we need to do anything drastic. "It was a big toss to lose. "My gold chain? He looked in great form this evening. The spinners did a great job as well. Post update

'It's only going to get bigger and better' - Liam Livingstone on The ... (SPORF)

In an exclusive interview with Sporf, Liam Livingstone lays out his hopes for The Hundred season two, and reflects on the season one success.

“I guess the cool thing for us was inspiring the kids to make cricket cool. The Hundred is cricket’s newest competition that fuses blockbuster entertainment with world-class cricket. It sort of went from there, and I’m guessing it was the easy way to follow, the 100 balls. It was more, go out there and have a smile on your face, and enjoy yourself. I guess you could see that as the tournament went on. On the field, Livingstone had little issue in adapting to the new Hundred format, compared to T20 cricket. So I guess that’s the reason everybody’s excited about what is to come this year. And the Birmingham Phoenix star believes that it has worked a treat. “It just became the norm to stick The Hundred on at night. “So, I’m not comparing us to Love Island, but yeah, I guess it was that easy thing to just stick on while you were making tea, or you’re having tea, or whatever. And I guess it was, sort of, fear of the unknown. However, he witnessed, first-hand, that the audience reception improved as it went on.

James Vince guides Southern Brave to perfect start in Hundred ... (The Guardian)

James Vince, Southern Brave's captain, was top scorer with 71 not out as his side beat Welsh Fire by nine wickets in Southampton.

If the fourth ball of the first innings had set the tone for the remainder, a similarly telling moment came from the fifth ball of Brave’s reply. You keep believing but it was losing the fourth, the fifth and the sixth – it didn’t allow us to get going. The innings started badly, with Joe Clarke out to the fourth ball without a run on the board, chipping meekly to Marcus Stoinis at cover, and never recovered. Those extras brought an imperfect end to what, for all the excellence of the home side’s performance, was in many respects an imperfect opening game. “The only way we would let them back into the game was to lose early wickets so there wasn’t a huge amount of scoreboard pressure. Welsh Fire mustered barely a spark throughout as they lost first the toss, then a succession of wickets and finally, inevitably, the match.

Fire outperformed by the fireworks as new Hundred season starts ... (ESPNcricinfo.com)

Missing stars, a lack of boundaries and no tension in the result. This wasn't the opener the ECB was after.

"The only way we would let them back into the game was to lose early wickets so there wasn't a huge amount of scoreboard pressure. That also exacerbated the impact of the toss, with conditions significantly harder for batters in the first innings than the second. The Ageas Bowl was sold out, though not quite at full capacity with two of the temporary stands for England's T20Is against India and South Africa covered and unused, and felt subdued for much of the night. Fire lost Joe Clarke, Tom Banton and Ollie Pope inside the first 22 balls for 16 runs between them, and despite Duckett's valiant 40 off 31 and two drops from Vince in the field, they were a long way short of a competitive total. The opening night of the Hundred's second season launched with a fireworks display so extensive that the smoke took nearly five minutes to clear. Missing stars, a lack of boundaries and no tension in the result.

The England all-rounder finished the 2021 men's Hundred with the most runs and the highest individual score.

It is quite nice to look back and see we were inspiring the next generation to pick up a bat or ball and play cricket. “I think someone like Harry Brook has the potential to do that. “Things like five-ball overs and the tactics behind it were completely different, especially at the death when you are the fielding side.
