A pilot and passenger had a lucky escape when the plane - believed to be a Piper Cherokee - overshot the runway before crashing through the perimeter fence and careering across the busy A429 into a ditch.

THE fire service has shared new images from the scene of a plane crash, which shut a major Wiltshire road for most of Thursday.

"We have conveyed one patient to Great Western Hospital and one patient to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, both by land ambulance." One of the responders was a fire crew from Stratton St Margaret Fire Station in Swindon. A plane crashed through airport perimeter fencing and came to rest in trees before landing in a ditch, after overshooting the runway at Cotswold Airport ...

Police closed the road for several hours and multiple fire crews attended. Emergency services responded to an air accident incident at around 10.30am which saw a light aircraft crash off the airport runway and into a ditch on the A429. Originally it was reported three people had been taken to hospital, but updates from the emergency services today have said it was in fact two who were treated.
