Liverpool rescue a point at Fulham, but could be left playing catch-up (ESPN)

Fulham showed they don't want to be in the Premier League just to make up the numbers again as they drew 2-2 with Liverpool at Craven Cottage.

He is the first Liverpool player aged 23 years or younger to score in a Premier League season opener since Philippe Coutinho in 2015. The other was in 2006-07 when Liverpool drew 1-1 at Sheffield United and finished third. BEST: Aleksandar Mitrovic -- Can he finally do it in the Premier League? On this evidence, absolutely. "We got a point for a really bad game by my side, and now it's a question of how did it happen. Liverpool were much more threatening when he went off just before the hour mark. City have a tough-looking opener at West Ham United on Sunday, but they now have a chance to establish an early advantage over their closest rivals. Klopp was concerned about Liverpool's injury problems before kick-off -- Caoimhin Kelleher, Diogo Jota, Ibrahima Konate, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kostas Tsimikas and Curtis Jones are all unavailable -- and Thiago Alcantara may now be added to that list. It can only be a matter of time before he starts. But both moments were products of his movement and energy. This is the only the second time that Liverpool has started a Premier League season with a draw against a newly promoted side. LONDON -- Fulham showed they don't want to be in the Premier League just to make up the numbers again as they came close to beating Liverpool at Craven Cottage, with the game finishing as a 2-2 draw.. Aleksandar Mitrovic, who scored 43 goals in the Championship last season, showed that at the age of 27 he might finally be ready for the Premier League. After heading home the first goal, he then won and converted a penalty to make sure the home side collected a point.

Núñez and Salah deny Fulham dream start after Mitrovic torments ... (The Guardian)

Fulham were denied a fine win against Liverpool on their return to the Premier League by Mohamed Salah, who rescued a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage.

As Klopp jogged to the dressing room at half-time he had multiple problems, compounded when Thiago Alcântara pulled up with a muscle injury soon after the restart. Alexander-Arnold, at the back post, had no answer to Mitrovic’s power and goalscorer’s instinct. The continuity allowed Fulham to attempt to do to Liverpool what they did to Championship opponents last season: blow them away from kick-off. “The attitude was not right in the beginning,” said Klopp. The £85m man’s first Premier League goal, a smart backheel, came within 15 minutes of his introduction and he also played his part in Mohamed Salah’s goal to rescue a draw. Until his arrival six minutes into the second half Liverpool had been listless, frequently beaten to the punch by Fulham. The Uruguayan, direct, speedy and hungry, soon had the promoted team on the back foot.

“The fact the skipper's arched effort only cannoned off the woodwork, however, means that Klopp and his staff will have to sift through the frustration and disappointment for over a week now until Crystal Palace visit Anfield on August 15. And they twice led a Liverpool side that Fulham must regard as likely to be among the season’s most difficult visitors to Craven Cottage. And if Jordan Henderson's last-gasp, 25-yard curler had dropped inches lower, Jurgen Klopp will have been able to puff out his cheeks and move on from a taxing examination in west London with three precious points in the bag. “This was the first time Fulham had avoided defeat in the opening game of a top-flight season after winning promotion, which is a good sign – as was a performance roared on by an appreciative home crowd. The £85m man’s first Premier League goal, a smart backheel, came within 15 minutes of his introduction and he also played his part in Mohamed Salah’s goal to rescue a draw. That could be seen on the faces of Klopp’s players at the final whistle here, when Fulham’s energy and intensity was rewarded with a point the home side fully deserved.

Jurgen Klopp calls out Liverpool stars after disappointing Fulham ... (Daily Express)

LIVERPOOL salvaged a point against Fulham on Saturday after going behind twice in their Premier League opener.

First half, we started the game in a specific way which was the complete opposite to how we wanted to start. The result is fine, I don't think we deserved more than that, but the performance is massively improvable.” Luis Diaz, who had earlier had a goal chalked off for offside, then curled an effort against the post. Then we wanted to fight back but you don't fight it easy anymore, the pitch was dry, stuff like this. I said already to my colleagues, the attitude was not right in the beginning. “The best thing about the game is the result actually,” Klopp said after the match.
