Bluebirds hit with second-half goal flurry and red card in nightmare ... (WalesOnline)

Cardiff City were hit with a flurry of second-half goals to consign them to a disappointing 3-0 defeat at the hands of League One side Portsmouth in the ...

Goal. Nelson with a poor pass to Campbell and Pompey intercept high up the pitch. A disheartening evening, to say the least, for Morison, his players and the fans in attendance. Save! Pompey break and Michael Jacobs is found on the edge of Cardiff's box. Some nice footwork and go-forward from Rubin Colwill, who it was nice to see out on the pitch, was about as promising as it got in the late stages for Cardiff, who never really looked like registering another meaningful attempt on goal. A poor pass from Nelson left Campbell short and Pompey nicked in to win it before Pigott was found in the box. The icing on a very ugly cake, as far as Cardiff were concerned. Curtis did not mess about and belted it as hard as he could - almost bursting the net as he doubled the visitors' lead. The referee took his time to award it, but eventually pointed to the spot. But it was almost a nightmare start for City's changed XI, when, just one minute into the match, Eli King was dispossessed on the edge of his own area. With no target man to cross to and with Pompey defending deep, City began to run out of ideas on the edge of the box and were reduced to speculative shots from range. Ten changes in all, with Nelson the only player to start both games, which included debuts for Jak Alnwick, Ollie Tanner, Campbell and a full debut for Jaden Philogene, who came on as a substitute at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. Joe Pigott, Ronan Curtis and Colby Bishop all got themselves on the scoresheet as an exasperated Steve Morison looked on in disbelief from the touchline.

The experienced boys and those who came off the bench contributed as well, so it was a good night for us.” There were five players in the starting 11 who are aged 21 or under and that’s great for the future of this football club. The young ones did well in pre-season and I’ve been saying that all along.

To add insult to injury, Cardiff debutant Daley-Campbell was sent off in the last minute for a challenge on Joe Rafferty. Portsmouth made the breakthrough in the 58th minute when a poor defensive header by Curtis Nelson allowed Curtis to burst into the box and set up Pigott, whose scuffed shot went in off the post. Cardiff nearly got a nasty shock inside two minutes when Pigott caught Eli King dithering on the ball before firing in a shot which forced Jak Alnwick to go full stretch to make his first save for the club and push the ball away for a corner.

Cardiff 0 Pompey 3 (Portsmouth FC)

Pompey cruised into the second round of the Carabao Cup with a second half dismantling of Championship side Cardiff.

And at the other end, the visitors were putting their bodies on the line to prevent City from getting back into the tie. Swabey hesitated before pointing to the spot and CURTIS made no mistake with a penalty that almost ripped the net off. Those two also combined to double the lead, with the former racing clear and unselfishly squaring for the latter to draw a fine save from Alnwick. It was Pompey who were first to threaten when Dale collected the ball at the back post, but he quickly had three defenders on him and could not force a shot through them. Pompey came close to taking the lead in the opening seconds, with Pigott stealing possession and firing in a shot that was turned around the post by Jak Alnwick. Danny Cowley made six changes from the side that were held to a draw by Lincoln in the league at the weekend.
