Full Moon in Aquarius, August 11, 2022: The Sturgeon Moon (VICE)

The sun applying to an opposition with Saturn in Aquarius, and the moon joining it, adds extra tension to the pressure to perform and live up to expectations. This full moon is very much about the balance between the self and the collective. Mercury makes a harmonious aspect (or applies to a trine) to the North Node, which can bode well for communication and the timing of discussions, and Venus separates from a trine to Neptune, adding a dash of glamor and romance! Each month, the sun and the moon stand opposite each other on the zodiac wheel, and this opposition is called the full moon. The full moon in Aquarius is like taking a break from a hot, sweaty dance party for a refreshing glass of ice water. This month’s full moon in Aquarius takes place on August 11, 2022, at 9:36 PM ET and is also known as the Sturgeon moon.

The Aquarius full Moon reminds you of your value to others, and how you can make a difference to people's lives when you shift your priorities. "Your ruling planet, Neptune, is retrograde in your sign during the Aquarius full Moon, putting your own desires on the back burner. "During the period of this full Moon, your ruling planet, communicative Mercury is in your own sign, Virgo, which means plans made today will be carried out easily. The full Moon is a little space just for you. She says: "You're always on the go, Aries, and so you sometimes miss the opportunity to look around you and check if someone is in distress or if someone is reaching out. This Aquarius full Moon will see you needing alone time, to reflect and plan ahead." The full Moon in your sign reminds you that your own space deserves to be honoured too. Interestingly, it is the fourth Supermoon in a row, following July's Buck moon, June's Strawberry moon, and May's Flower Moon. The Sturgeon Moon is also the final Supermoon of 2022." The message of the Sturgeon Moon is to carry on. The enormous fish can live to over 100 years old and can grow to over a ton in weight. It will peak after midnight in the UK, so the official full Moon date is the 12th. This effect is amplified further when the Moon is still low on the horizon, thanks to the Moon illusion.

But that's only when the moon isn't in a phase dominating the sky. The full moon also lasts the entire night, leaving no hours of complete darkness, which is preferred." In previous years, they were most visible in nearly moon-free skies. "It's just a natural point of the moon's orbit. . That's why a supermoon also appears slightly brighter than a regular full moon. "At certain times of the year, the moon is at its closest point to Earth and these are called supermoons," said Mike Hankey, operations manager for the American Meteor Society, via email.

Supermoon alert: The last supermoon of the year rises tonight! (Space.com)

August's full moon will occur tonight (Aug. 11) and is the last supermoon of the year. The dazzling Sturgeon supermoon will outshine many Perseid meteors.

We recommend the Celestron Astro Fi 102 (opens in new tab) as the top pick in our best beginner's telescope guide. According to NASA (opens in new tab) this lunar deception may be caused by the brain comparing the moon to nearby buildings or objects, or perhaps it is just wired to process things on the horizon as bigger than things in the sky. As such, it can be tricky to make out particular features on the lunar surface in detail due to the lack of shadows. Usually, observers in North America could expect to see between 50 and 60 meteors per hour however the full moon will reduce the visibility of meteors to about 10-20 per hour at most according to a statement from NASA (opens in new tab). A supermoon will appear as much as 30% brighter and 14% larger than usual, and while this may sound like a lot, it's very hard to spot such a difference with the naked eye. We have already witnessed three supermoons this year in May, June and July with August's supermoon wrapping things up with the last supermoon of the year.

Keenan advises that it’s critical to get some natural sunshine on the day of the full moon, too, so be prepared to swap some scroll-time for an IRL stroll in the sunshine. Aside from its beauty, the full moon can actually affect our bodies too. According to National World, a supermoon appears around 7% larger and 15% brighter than a standard full moon. However, the moon itself isn’t actually any bigger. If you’ve taken a moment to stare into the sky over the past few nights, you may have noticed that the moon has seemed bigger and brighter. For anyone unfamiliar, supermoons are categorised as lunar events when the moon is at 360,000km or less away from Earth in its orbital path.

Two full moons in one month is not as rare as many people think and happens every two to three years. A supermoon is defined as a full moon which occurs closer to the Earth, appearing around seven percent bigger to the naked eye and producing some impressive photographs. This repeats on average once a month but the cycle is around 29.5 days so some months will have two full moons.

How the Last Supermoon of 2022 on August 11 Will Impact You ... (Allure Magazine)

Tonight, August 11, not only will there be a full moon in Aquarius, it will actually be the last supermoon of the year. Here, astrologer Emily Newhouse ...

When Saturn is conjunct to the moon, we can feel the weight of the world on our shoulders. We are in the middle of the lunar cycle that started with the Leo new moon, because Aquarius is opposite Leo. At the focal point of the T-square, we have the North Node (a celestial point relating to our soul’s purpose), Uranus (planet of inspiration and rebellion), and Mars (the planet of will and action). Uranus and Mars are both in Taurus, asking us to take inspired, slow action around our need for security and stability, and even more concretely, our finances. When the moon is in Aquarius, we can feel somewhat detached from emotions and have a desire to retreat from them. "Super" is closer to an astronomical prefix and pertains to the size of the full moon in the sky. As I covered before in my last Supermoon article, the words "super" and "sturgeon" (and similar phrases) are not astrological terms. When we see that darkness, the parts of ourselves we don’t want to see, we can release it.
