Laal Singh Chaddha: Lieutenant Dan's character has been ... (OpIndia)

Let us not even go into the implausibility of how a trained Indian Army soldier cannot differentiate between his own brothers in the Army and the enemies.

Sure, there are the usual Bollywood mouthpieces singing praises for the movie, but since the movie releases just ahead of a long weekend, it may even pick up the pace and get some commercial success. After the opening, it seems the movie has taken liberties with the storyline to peddle Aamir Khan’s usual anti-Hindu propaganda that he is known for. The good terrorist is shown doing Namaz, (Lt Dan was an atheist and he later made peace with God, that was one of the best sub narratives in Forrest Gump) and our Laal Singh declares that Puja Path is useless, they only spread ‘malaria’. And thus, Gary Sinise’s legendary, historic character from Forrest Gump becomes an Islamist terrorist, a ‘good’ person apparently because that is what Aamir Khan and Atul Kulkarni the writer wants Indians to swallow. India Today’s review of the movie has called out Aamir Khan’s bad acting performance. Aamir Khan’s comeback film Laal Singh Chaddha has been given a thumbs down by several critics.

Film trade analyst Sumit Kadel also weighed in and gave the film a two-star rating, calling it "a poor adaptation of Forrest Gump." Kadel wrote, "LSC is a poor adaptation of Forrest Gump, it lacks soul and emotions of the original classic... Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh gave the Aamir Khan film a two-star rating and said that the film disappoints on several fronts. Secondly, the market in the South for Hindi films is usually soft, even for an Aamir Khan movie." Users, however, had a mixed take on the film. It is not an original film like PK which people will rush to watch Aamir Khan in. Even if a small section of the potential audience who get affected by the trends don't show up it is a loss for the makers. Trade expert Ramesh Bala said the film does not have the originality factor going for it since it is a remake of the 1994 classic Tom Hanks. He said, "Firstly, it is a remake of a Hollywood movie, Forrest Gump, which most people have seen. The film has way too much riding on its shoulders -- hopes of reviving Bollywood coupled with Aamir Khan's superstardom. Talking of the first day first show, the film opened to mixed reviews at the box office. Aamir Khan-starrer Laal Singh Chaddha has released in theatres today. Also, the screen count has been reduced for the film, which further impacts the overall business." The film has released across 3,500 screens in India, which includes Tamil and Telugu markets.

After a spate of box office duds coming from Bollywood, a lot is riding on the fate of Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar's Raksha Bandhan.

While Bollywood’s performance has been dismal, four successive super-hits from the South—Pushpa: The Rise Part-1, RRR, KGF: Chapter 2 and Vikram (to a much smaller extent in Hindi as Vikram: Hitlist)—have grossed more than Rs 3,000 crore worldwide, including nearly Rs 800 crore in Hindi net collections. On the other hand, Raksha Bandhan is estimated to open with Rs 9 crore on day one and may end up reporting lifetime collection of Rs 80-90 crore. We maintain that Hindi Box Office is slated to decline 22 per cent (vs pre COVID levels) in Q2FY23, as content has been below par so far and we are already the end of first half of the quarter, with no film reporting a positive surprise,” he said. His only hit during this period has been Sooryavanshi (Nov 5, 2021), which was made on a production budget of about Rs 160 crore and earned a net lifetime collection of Rs 196 crore in India and Rs 295 crore gross worldwide collections, according to Bollywood Hungama. Elara Capital’s vice president Karan Taurani says expects Laal Singh to have a stronger opening with Rs 16 crore, and a lifetime collection of Rs 150-160 crore. Seven of the top 10 grossers in this span were from the South, pegs Ormax Media data. Trade analyst Komal Nahta says they are both costly, big-banner and well-mounted films, which are coming when Bollywood is reeling under the pressure of losses. Raksha Bandhan, on the other hand, saw advance booking of 35,000 tickets sold for Day 1 at the box office with a total collection of approx. The film is produced by Zee Studios and director Aanand L. Rai at an approximate budget of over Rs 70 crore. In terms of all India sales, the film, which is an official remake of the hit Hollywood film Forrest Gump, has sold approximately 57,000 tickets for the opening day. For last few weeks, the film was facing social media backlash and boycott calls because of old statements of Aamir Khan, who has also produced the film along with Viacom18 studios. Over the next eight days, there are four holidays owing to Raksha Bandhan, a long weekend including Independence Day, followed by Janmashtami and Parsi New Year which may be partial holidays.

The signature brilliance of Aamir Khan seems to be missing in the dialogue-led scenes, but he puts his strengths to test with the scenes where there are no dialogues. Lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya seems to be a little lost in the film. The film’s director Advait Chandan, who has been a long-time collaborator of Aamir in different capacities, has done justice to Kulkarni’s script. The script has been penned by actor Atul Kulkarni, who has worked with Aamir in ‘Rang De Basanti’, and is his dear friend. Much like its original, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ tells the story of a simple man and how he sails through life with his goodwill and values. His success ratio only adds to his massive credibility as the superstar who rarely fails, barring of course in few exceptions such ‘Mela’ and ‘Thugs of Hindostan’.

'Laal Singh Chaddha' Review: Forrest Gump in India (The New York Times)

This Indian adaptation of “Forrest Gump” doubles down on its Pollyanna hero, substituting different historical touchstones.

(Laal is Sikh but only barely grasps these violent events.) The famous box of chocolates is reimagined, sweetly so: life is now like a golgappa (a crisp fried treat). In the film’s framing device, Laal (Aamir Khan, the star of the 2001 crossover hit “Lagaan”) recounts his life story to passengers on a train.

Forrest Gump is one of those rare conservative films that I manage to like for its sentimental value. My political reservations against the touted classic ...

The star of the film is Atul Kulkarni, who has adapted the screenplay. The adaptation of Jenny in Rupa is evidence of the lack of understanding men have for women. Shahrukh also faced scrutiny for his performance in My Name is Khan, but it is still a better performance in a better film. The one element where it becomes criminal is the performance by the protagonist. Aamir is earnest in a couple of moments, but otherwise, he parodies disability and churns a mockery to mimic a bit and diverge a bit from Hanks’ performance. In this way, Laal Singh Chaddha is as inherently patronizing as Forrest Gump. When the war occurs in Forrest Gump, it becomes a matter of survival for the elite American forces against the guerilla force of the enemy. No. In the end, Laal also stands for the most rational choice for those involved, as did Forrest Gump. Laal is also made to be the optimum candidate for familial and professional responsibilities. When the war occurs in Laal Singh Chaddha, it becomes a matter of survival for all involved. The primary reason is the absence of a counterculture movement in India. India was never liberalized in any shape, despite all political turmoils. Laal Singh Chaddha is what Forrest Gump poses to be. The problem lies when the man, a protagonist, becomes a personified argument from the side of the filmmaker.

It is interesting to see how the original has been adapted to the Indian milieu. The making of ‘Tur Kalleyan’ from its music to the video was long and overtaxing at times. And Laal names the lingerie business after Rupa. Yes, the Rupa brand of underclothes is owned by Laal Singh Chaddha. So is Shah Rukh Khan’s signature step with his hands stretched out. Atul Kulkarni’s screenplay takes us through stretches of Indian history encountering milestones ranging from the 1974 Sikh Riots to Sushmita Sen being crowned Miss Universe. It is a clever engrossing adaptation and one that leaves the original behind. He believes if God has given you more money than you need, then you must pass it on to the needy. It just gets to you pretty much from the start when we meet the over-protected little Laal struggling with a leg disorder that doctors say, could leave him crippled. Except what his mother (played by Mona Singh who is no patch on Sally Field in the original) has taught him: to ingratiate himself to everyone he meets. Soon, the entire compartment is hooked to Laal’s narration. And I don’t mean just the panoramic sweep of Nature’s bounty that cinematographer Satyajit Pande brings to every frame. The makers of Forrest Gump should be more than happy with what writer Atul Kulkarni, director Advait Chandan and Aamir Khan have done to the original. But it is Rupa, played by the ethereal Kareena Kapoor Khan, for whom Laal’s pure-as-gold heart beats. But here is a remake, a re-creation if you will, that actually surpasses the original.

YouTuber and film enthusiast Dewansh Singh Rajput published a video review of the film on his YouTube channel in which he made some worrisome allegations against the film. According to Bollywood pundits, an Aamir Khan movie should have ideally had an opening of Rs 30 crores. Earlier, when PR agencies were doing on overdrive trying to show an uptick in advance booking, Taran Adarsh had tweeted sounding a warning that people should not believe the hype that has been created. The movie is said to be doing better in Delhi and Punjab but has failed miserably in the rest of the country. The movie’s opening and just how badly it did is evidenced by the fact that the opening was worse than the Kabir Khan directorial, 83, and the Farhad Samji film, Bachchhan Paandey. On the other hand, the movie did not even come close to opening days for movies that have been mega hits this year. It is reported to be the lowest opening that an Aamir Khan movie has seen in the past 13 years.

It’s only when Laal Singh Chaddha leaves the dull shackles of his mannerisms, and hits the road, passing by some of the most spectacular sights that India possesses– the intense blue Ladakh lake, the shimmering Himalayan night, a scenic Southern coastline– that he starts to grow on me. And Kareena Kapoor Khan, as Rupa, the love of Laal’s life, desperate to put her painful past behind, infuses real feeling into her part. When we first come upon Laal Singh Chaddha, he is in a train, holding on to a box of gol-gappa, or pani-puri, and a backpack full of memories. It is also, centrally and crucially, Sardar Laal Singh Chaddha himself. But it is the train which gathers speed, not Laal’s meandering tale, which only kicks in towards the last half hour. Soon, though, Laal succeeds in drawing in the disinterested woman across him, and then the entire compartment.

Unlike the majority of the people on social media, the former England spinner’s call for a boycott is not based on Khan’s old statement, but on the ‘disgraceful’ content of the movie. Taking to the micro-blogging site, the former left-arm spinner described the adaptation as a “total disgrace” to the Indian Armed Forces and Sikhs. So far, the majority of these boycott calls have been based on Khan’s old remarks but now, former England cricketer Monty Panesar has supported these boycott calls, but for a different reason.

'Laal Singh Chaddha' Ending, Explained: Did Laal And Rupa Get ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

It made our socio-political systems look absurd. After watching a film like “Forrest Gump,” you are bound to think how simple yet complicated it is to live ...

We have loved Amir Khan over the years and his body of work too, and that is why it feels strange to say that he probably misjudged the pitch of his character and the tonality of the same. Laal met Rupa and found out that she had a kid named Aman. He thought that she would have married some other guy, but Rupa told him he was the father of the kid. He told Laal that he was destined to die on the battlefield. The essence of the film is to see the man-made systems and their absurdities through the eyes of a man who had a pure soul and who took life as it is and kept it simple. The circle of life had completed one revolution, and it was time for a fresh chapter to begin. There was a lot of resentment, pain, and sadness that he was not able to deal with. Maybe he was running from his past, from his loneliness and from his regrets. He had lost both his legs and didn’t know whether to thank Laal for saving his life or curse him for subjecting him to living a life of such misery. It was 1999, and India was in a state of war with Pakistan. Laal and Bala were in the same battalion. Rupa told him that he couldn’t keep saving her throughout her life and that he would have to let her be. She prayed to her God to make her rich, so that one day she could make the violence stop and give her father all the money he needed. From that day onwards, wherever Laal had to go, he used to run and make it there.

Laal Singh Chaddha: A comfortable film for the obedient Indian (The Indian Express)

It's one among many love letters Aamir Khan has written to himself, seeking a utopia that only a few are comfortable with.

In both films, the neurodivergence of the protagonist is used to justify his apolitical nature. However, in the case of Gump, the film’s preoccupation with conflict is not something that is dealt with in isolation. The historical events that unfold in the backdrop of Gump’s life are not merely events, they are explanations for the choices characters like Jenny make. History, as we know it, is the memory of the collective. The NCERT, which dropped the 2002 Gujarat riots from its Class 12 Political Science syllabus earlier this year, explained its stance by stating that it wanted to “rationalise the course content, and avoid overlaps”. Perhaps the makers of Laal Singh Chaddha also underwent similar epiphanies, except that Kulkarni and Chandan’s carefully “curated” historical accuracy falls flat. This citizen could be Atul Kulkarni, Advait Chandan, or Aamir Khan — the writer, director and actor, respectively, of Laal Singh Chaddha, which hit the big screen on August 11.

Save a charming vignette in which young Laal (Ahmad Ibn Umar) teaches the actual Shah Rukh Khan his signature dance move, Chandan’s film doesn’t indulge too heavily in the protagonist-as-a-participant-in-the-tide-of-history gambit. Rather than a park bench, Laal spins his story in a crowded train carriage, the captive audience making more sense and generating more intensity than Zemeckis’ passing strangers. Starting in the ’70s rather than the ’50s, the story boasts some successful changes.
