The Toffees fell to a 1-0 opening day defeat against Chelsea at Goodison Park last weekend, with a penalty from Jorginho settling the contest, but Frank Lampard has strengthened his side in two key areas since then. Salomon Rondon has served his suspension and is likely to start on Saturday, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Yerry Mina, Andre Gomes, Ben Godfrey and Andros Townsend still missing through injury. Gerrard had managed Patterson during his time as Rangers boss, moving to Aston Villa in November of last year. The Premier League halts for the World Cup in mid-November, with Everton's last game before the break against Bournemouth on November 12. On this occasion, the French full-back will be shaping up against the Toffees. The defender has begun his rehabilitation work at Finch Farm having had surgery earlier this week.

Villama Preview: Aston Villa v Everton (7500 To Holte)

Aston Villa, rising like a phoenix from a dumpster fire, welcome Everton to Villa Park. There's plenty of questions to be addressed following the cavern of ...

It’s wishful, but not unrealistic thinking and with that it’s a 2-1 win for Aston Villa. The back four will likely be the same as last week, though there’s a chance Mings comes on for Konsa. In the midfield, we’ll see Kamara holding with Douglas Luiz and John McGinn. The number 10 position will go to Coutinho, though I’d love to see Emi, and Ollie Watkins partnering with Danny Ings in attack. Bournemouth weren’t supposed to be good, they, in fact, are not good, and Villa have no business losing to them.

Both teams will want to come out fighting after such a poor start, but Villa’s superior quality in attacking areas combined with the backing of the home crowd should see through to a hard-fought win. A hard game to predict. Tyrone Mings and Emi Buendia are available for Villa but Kortney Hause remains sidelined.

Similarly, the back four almost names itself, with Matty Cash and Lucas Digne nailed on to start. Their opening day result may reflect in his team selection to face the toffees. Jacob Ramsey will therefore continue just in front of them and will be given the majority of the transitional burden, as he looks to convert safe play in midfield to chances up front.

Blues travel to Villa Park in first away game of the season.

The last time the two sides played was in late January while caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson was still in charge and Frank Lampard was under consideration for taking over. The Toffees have added four players so far this summer transfer window, but it’s the one spot they’re to make a signing at that could be all the difference early this season. Everton take on Aston Villa in the early game that gets Matchday 2 underway this weekend. Overhit and Patterson heads away and then sets off on a counter, tripped by Coutinho who goes into the book. Iwobi beaten by Villa new boy Diego Carlos in the air but it’s well over. Not surprisingly, Villa have been focusing on the Everton right early on. 49’ - A Coady cross finds Patterson, he beats Digne and is fouled, right on the edge of the box and the former Blue is booked too. That causes more chaos in the box and lots of flying heads and boots before Villa can clear. Freekick is not cleared by the hosts, Myko gets it back into the box, Coady header, Tarky gets a boot on it, and it goes wide. 45+1’ - Good move from the Blues, Iwobi’s cross into the box from the left falls for Gray but he tries to control and it’s hooked away for a corner. Iwobi loses the ball and gives up a freekick. 51’ - Now Gray with the ball in the box, but can’t get a cross off.

Aston Villa vs Everton, Premier League live: score and latest ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

I don't know what Gerrard's got against wingers but Villa are way too narrow against a team playing with wing-backs.

All Villa so far. Not at all sure about Frank Lampard's decision to persist with Anthony Gordon up top when he has Salomon Rondon who might not be prolific but certainly is a presence and brought his Newcastle team-mates into the game well under Rafael Benitez a few years back. Big chance for Villa. McGinn's inswinging corner from the right with his left is arrowed on to Diego Carlos's head. Everton look exceptionally vulnerable when they lose the ball in midfield, lacking the legs to recover quickly. He traps it, faces up Tarkowski and tries to thread a pass through to Ings that Coady cuts out. McNeil tacks towards the left, Gray peels off into space to shoot but McNeil's pass is too heavy and Villa work it out for a corner. When Villa manipulate one of Iwobi and Davies/Doucoure out of position, their otherwise well-organised defence looks vulnerable. Davies is penalised for a foul just inside the Villa half. He recycles it infield but Everton and Iwobi in particular stop the probing. Iwobi floors McGinn 15 yards outside the Villa box. Davies slides in to win the ball and take down Watkins with his followthrough. Gordon feeds off the scraps and clouts a fizzing shot straight at Martinez who slaps it away with his palms.

Gameweek 2 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) gets underway at Villa Park, where Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard square off for the first time as managers.

New signing Conor Coady and Mason Holgate come in at centre-half as the Everton boss persists with the striker-less set-up of Gameweek 1 despite Salomon Rondon‘s availability. The Villa manager’s other change comes at centre-half as deposed captain Tyrone Mings returns to the starting XI at the expense of Ezri Konsa. “Ollie Watkins is ready, he has had his strongest week since we have been back.

Aston Villa v Everton: Premier League – live! (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: It's Gerrard v Lampard as both teams look to record their first points of the season. Join Scott Murray.

8 min: Coady puts his foot on the ball and slows things down for Everton. He nearly sends McNeil away with a raking pass. Mykolenko had a bit of his shirt, but not much, and he was outside the box anyway. Villa come again, Cash bursting into the box from the right and falling over, claiming a penalty. The pass is woefully overhit, and Gray does well just to keep the ball in play, then wins a corner. Tarkowski wins a header, and Gordon bundles the loose ball home from a couple of yards. 13 min: Mings sends a long pass down the inside-right channel for Watkins, who takes the ball down neatly, but fails to find Ings in the middle. The ball drops to Gray, six yards out, but before he can poke home, Kamara arrives to deny him and concede a corner. The ball drops to Patterson on the edge of the box. 48 min: Gray flicks a header down the left to cleverly send Mykolenko into space. 46 min: Iwobi miscontrols then brings down McGinn as he prepares to scoot towards the Everton box. 49 min: Patterson takes on Digne down the right and wins. 50 min: Villa predictably struggle to clear the set piece.

Aston Villa vs Everton: Gerrard gets better of Lampard in tense clash (NBC Sports)

Aston Villa beat Everton 2-1 at Villa Park as Steven Gerrard got the better of Frank Lampard in their first-ever managerial duel.

Everton stayed compact in what essentially became a 5-3-1-1 formation and Lampard was keen to stay solid defensively and try to hurt Villa with direct play down the wings and from set-piece situations. Gerrard got the better of Lampard this time and his Villa side did just deserve the win. In and around the box they struggled to carve out big chances but they did look very good on the break and when they got the ball forward quickly and with purpose. It was only Week 2 but the passion on the sidelines showed us just how big of a season this is for the former England teammates and friends. They had a real go late on and almost snatched a point and you can’t fault the effort of this Everton side. From the first whistle Villa came flying out of the traps but they couldn’t quite find the cutting edge.

Former England teammates Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard face off at Villa Park this weekend as Everton head to the West Midlands.

Frank Lampard! A match between two struggling sides desperate to improve and lay down a marker for the season, with tedious arguments over England's best midfielders rumbling on in the background... Villa have looked shaky from corners and they didn't deal with this one, with Gordon turning the ball in from close range. Ings and Philippe Coutinho seemed to get in each other's way from the cut-back, but the striker turns and rifles a shot past the helpless Pickford with his weaker left foot. 24th min: And just like that, Everton have the ball in the net... 41st min: Everton are trying to be a bit more assertive in possession, but Emiliano Martinez remains untroubled in the Villa goal. 1 hr 20 minutes to KO: Both these teams started the season with defeats: Everton were edged out at home by Chelsea, while Villa were beaten at Bournemouth. Gerrard's men attempted 13 shots from open play on the south coast, a figure bettered only by Tottenham Hotspur (15) and Newcastle United (17) last week. Ramsey teases a low ball across the six-yard box and Coutinho just can't reach it on the slide. It was a frantic finish, but Everton just couldn't find an equaliser, and Villa get their first points of the season. It was straight at the Villa keeper but he dealt with it well. This time, it's Onana who is dispossessed in the centre circle, and Buendia takes over: he slides in Watkins and races onto the return pass across the box to slot home, with Pickford out of position. Onana was a lively player off the bench for his Premier League debut and it was his marauding run and cross that saw Digne turn the ball into his own net. 85th min: GOAL! 2-0 TO VILLA! Once again, it comes from Everton losing the ball up the pitch.
