Alfie Chang replaces Ryan Woods in the midfield for his first Championship start. The Head Coach made one change to the side that took to the field against the Terriers in the last league game. John Eustace's men are back in league action as they take on the Bluebirds at the Cardiff City Stadium, looking to continue their unbeaten start to the 46-game campaign after drawing at Luton Town and beating Huddersfield Town at St. Andrew's.
Cardiff City move up to third place in the EFL Championship, handing Birmingham City their first league defeat of the season.
O'Dowda was physical in his game and looks to be a dependable figure going forward for Steve Morison's side. Ruddy was certainly responsible for keeping his side in the contest, with Birmingham having a strong penalty appeal turned down minutes later, as Hogan was clipped from behind by a chasing Cédric Kipré, but referee Darren Bond seemed to not spot the contact and booked Hogan for his protests. Cardiff came agonizingly close to a second goal, as Birmingham midfielder Juninho Bacuna was robbed of possession by O'Dowda who spotted Watters baring down on goal, but the striker was denied by a brave stop from Ruddy who ventured off his line to deny Watters his first league goal of the season.

Scott Hogan, Birmingham’s foil for Troy Deeney up front, was sent clean through but dithered horribly to allow Bluebirds defender Jamilu Collins to prod the ball away from his feet before Hogan could even shoot. The loss to Cardiff was Birmingham manager John Eustace's first since taking over at the club Aston Villa loanee Jaden Philogene scored the winning goal for Cardiff against Birmingham

It’s getting the players to stay in the mindset that if you’re not in the team, you’re going to come on, especially in attacking areas. We don’t have to sit there and put out the same team every week.” I thought he was excellent. He said: “I think with the depth, we’ve got players who aren’t quite where they need to be physically, like Jack Simpson - he’s not played any pre-season games. But on the whole, it was a really promising performance. “I thought we were excellent,” Steve began.
The Bluebirds host the Blues in the day's early Championship kick-off.
Substitute Williams is sent down the wing and hits a low cross. Anything, just to get him going, but nothing was coming and he was hauled off at the break. He finds Etete, but his close-range header is wide of the post! He just needed a goal, one to bounce off his thigh and into the net. But then came a particularly hairy moment for the hosts when Hogan was sprinting through on goal. He is hauled down and Jordan James is booked. Cardiff, though, forged another gaping chance to put the game to bed courtesy of some brilliant work by Mark Harris down the left. But the miss of the half came by virtue of Max Watters. It was that man O'Dowda again who architected the chance, slotting through the striker clean on goal. Pinging off passes like bullets out of a machine gun and making all the right decisions with the ball at their feet. It was O'Dowda, though, who made the goal. It whizzed past Watters but Philogene was there to tap in the easiest of chances. He let off a tame, side-footed strike and John Ruddy saved well.
Aston Villa loanee Jaden Philogene scored the opening goal on 17 minutes, following Callum O'Dowda's cross into the Blues' box. The visitors struggled to deal ...
Was in front of goal with a chance to score the equaliser but a crucial block from defence denied him. Could have done better in taking Blues' first corner kick of the game but linked up play more often in the second-half. Always in position to mark his man, though could have done better to stop Cardiff's attack in the build-up to goal. Got his team further forward in the second-half but will be gutted to not have had a greater impact. His man-marking could have been better in the first-half after he let both Callum O'Dowda and Max Watters run with the ball. Given his experience, he could have reacted better on some key occasions but struggled to keep up with the danger.

Similar to Colin, Roberts is a solid Championship player but only in a certain system. He was constantly exposed against Cardiff and his positioning was a major worry as he was the central figure in a back three. It was a poor performance from the Blues in a game where they struggled to find their stride as the Bluebirds dominated possession against John Eustace’s side.
