Nottingham Forest 1-0 West Ham: Premier League – as it happened (The Guardian)

MBM report: Taiwo Awoniyi struck for Forest before Declan Rice had a penalty saved by Dean Henderson as Steve Cooper's men clung on for a win.

West Ham think it’s a handball, and they have a case. Henderson was motionless as it hit the underside of the bar and bounced back into his arms. West Ham must feel like they are destined not to score today: they’ve hit the underside of the bar twice, missed a penalty and had a goal dubiously disallowed. Rice’s imperfect penalty, dragged low to his left, is saved superbly by Dean Henderson. He clenches his fist and waves it triumphantly before getting to his feet. Forget the goal, which was lucky; he looks a proper handful for defenders. But enough about that shower, we’re watching Forest v West Ham! I know this sounds ridiculous at this precise moment in time, but I don’t. Excellent goalkeeper though he is, Henderson isn’t good enough for Man Utd IMO; he showed that in 2020-21. 83 min: Off the line by Williams! So much for being comfortable. 86 min Hi Rob,” says Tony Mason. “I think it’s wonderful how these teams have embraced the 30th anniversary of the Premier League by playing like it’s 1992. I’m so happy for this man [Worrall] as well, he’s waited so long for this opportunity. “It’s not the best we’ve played by any stretch of the imagination. We need to make sure this place is bouncing for every single fixture this season.

Nottingham Forest off the mark with victory over West Ham (Times Series)

The City Ground had not hosted a top-flight match since 1999 and Taiwo Awoniyi ensured it was a winning homecoming for Forest.

It was 100mph stuff and West Ham were again a lick of paint from an equaliser as Benrahma was denied by the woodwork, when his 20-yard free-kick hit the underside of the crossbar and into the grateful hands of Henderson. But Forest rediscovered their verve and soon suffered their own VAR misfortune as they had a goal disallowed. West Ham were millimetres from levelling within 25 seconds of the restart as Fornals sent a curling 20-yard effort crashing into the underside of the crossbar, with Tomas Soucek seeing his header from the rebound saved by Henderson. The Hammers were in danger of being overran, but were able to get a foothold in the game and thought they had taken the lead in the 42nd minute, only for VAR to intervene. Luckily Ben Johnson diverted it on to the knee of Awoniyi and the ball ended up in the bottom corner. The City Ground had not hosted a top-flight match since 1999 and Taiwo Awoniyi ensured it was a winning homecoming for Forest with his first-half goal.

Brian Clough's shadow looms large but Nottingham Forest writing ... (The Independent)

The two-time European champions recorded a first Premier League victory of the 21st century by beating West Ham 1-0 on Sunday.

All know about the two times Forest conquered Europe and the two decades they were shut out of England’s elite league. He did, and in a season that started with them seemingly plotting a course to League One. And then there are the long-suffering locals and the younger fans for whom a 23-year exile meant their football watching had been confined to the lower leagues, for whom the Championship lost its charm. The focus on Forest has been on the quantity of signings; more excellence and it may switch to the quality. And if Cloughisms abound, there may not be a club in English football as defined by one man as Forest. As the City Ground staged Premier League football for the first time since 1999, their greatest living manager was present. Now they have won a Premier League game this season before Manchester United or Liverpool, West Ham or Leicester. Forest supporters had a cardboard cutout of Cooper in the stands.

Report: Forest make £17m bid to sign 'destructive' European champion (HITC)

Nottingham Forest have made a £17m bid to sign Djibril Sow, with Steve Cooper looking to bring in a 15th senior player this summer.

Indeed, Forest have gone all out this summer upon their return to the Premier League, and signing a player like Sow could be huge in the club’s chances of remaining in the top-flight following their promotion back into the big time, and Cooper could do with sealing a deal for the midfielder soon. With their first points on the board, Cooper is now seemingly looking to make more signings to complete the squad ahead of Forest’s first Premier League season in 23 years, with Sow seemingly the club’s next target as a central midfielder looks set to be the next arrival in Nottingham. A regular for the European champions, Forest have identified Sow as a potential signing to add to the 14 other additions Cooper has made this summer, with the English coach this weekend securing his first Premier League win for the club in a 1-0 victory at the City Ground against West Ham.
