Ten Hag used another academy graduate, Zidane Iqbal, with great regularity during pre-season and there is a sense that the Iraqi could also be set to jump ahead of Garner in the pecking order. An injury at the start of pre-season meant that Garner had little opportunity to impress Ten Hag on the tour and this could be one of the factors that has led to the decision to let him go. “Erik ten Hag has decided that Garner should be allowed to leave if a suitable bid arrives for the 21-year-old midfielder.

England's top clubs regularly sell talented young players, but Manchester United should be retaining Garner's services.

In comparison, Brewster moved to Liverpool for a reported fee of close to £23m. Last summer, Chelsea sold protegees Marc Guehi, Kurt Zouma, Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham for an estimated combined figure of around £115m, which was reinvested back into the squad. Garner played 40 league games last term and developed his game immensely. The 21-year-old has already demonstrated an ability to control the pace and flow of a game, has an excellent range of passing and isn’t afraid to put in a challenge. Fellow journalist James Robson claimed via Twitter that the decision to sell Garner is due to a lack of money received from departures of other players, who they had hoped to sell in order to ‘boost funds’ this summer. Reports on Monday indicated United are willing to sell one of their best young assets in order to strengthen their first-team squad after a disastrous opening to the new campaign.

Man United are prepared to let midfielder James Garner leave the club on a permanent deal before the transfer window closes.

His performances at Forest last season demonstrated how big a talent he is and just how much potential he has. He has spent the last two seasons out on loan, spending time at both Watford and Forest, meaning he has played regularly. But regardless of what happens, United's supporters are unlikely to forgive the club anytime soon. Instead, United have made the decision to cash in on him. He excelled on loan at Nottingham Forest last season and produced a catalogue of polished performances. Garner, however, has not been so lucky, failing to step off the bench in either of United's opening two Premier League outings.

At Spurs, we aren’t in such a desperate need to sign him temporarily. But we can still do with adding a youngster in Garner’s ilk to future-proof that area. Man United are making wrong decision with James Garner before ... (Manchester Evening News)

James Garner is up for sale for all the wrong reasons at Man United, where there is a void when there is supposed to be a midfield.

Keita, Henderson and Milner lined up in the 5-0 evisceration of United at Old Trafford last season and two are likely to start with Fabinho next week, especially with Darwin Nunez suspended and Diogo Jota also sidelined. To no one's surprise, Garner was still named on the bench at Brentford as United have a gaping void in their team where a midfield is supposed to be. Fred has merit in the right structure but United are as stable as a Jenga tower. The manager who signed him was Erik ten Hag, a man United now blindly back in the transfer market. There is not a market for United duds, who are almost exclusively unsellable. Ten Hag's judgement is so questionable United are prepared to sell James Garner, a 21-year-old untried midfielder who is a victim of his own success.

With Leicester City only making the one solitary signing during this summer transfer window, many Foxes fans have become understandably frustrated.

The Manchester United man would provide brilliant back up to Wilfred Ndidi, while also providing some attributes that the Nigerian cannot. But with rumours circling that Leicester are one of the clubs interested in Manchester United midfielder James Garner, it may just soften the blow of an underwhelming summer. Foxes of Leicester were also told by Konur that the Red Devils’ asking price is around $15M. That equates to roughly £12.6m.
