The immediate political future of Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, one of former President Donald Trump's most powerful critics in the GOP, is at stake on Tuesday ...

Murkowski, Republican Kelly Tshibaka and Democrat Patricia Chesbro will advance to the November election, CNN projects, against a fourth candidate yet to be determined. When she was defeated in a 2010 Republican primary during the tea party wave, Murkowski launched a write-in campaign and defeated GOP nominee Joe Miller in the fall. Lisa Murkowski, a Republican who voted to convict Trump during his second impeachment trial, was also facing new competition this year fueled by her lack of fealty to the former President. Former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, whose ascent marked a precursor to the party's Trump era, returned to the ballot on Tuesday. The two survivors to date, in California and Washington, benefited from their states' nonpartisan primary system. "America will never be the same." His enduring popularity there, coupled with Cheney's role as vice chair of the January 6 committee, made the three-term congresswoman and daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney a top target of Trump allies. "Our republic relies upon the goodwill of all candidates for office to accept, honorably, the outcome of elections. Overnight, the Cheney campaign filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission creating a leadership PAC to be called "The Great Task." "No House seat, no office in this land is more important than the principles that we are all sworn to protect. The name of the PAC is a historic nod to Lincoln who spoke at Gettysburg of the "great task" facing the country. "This primary election is over," Cheney said in her speech.

The winning defiance of Liz Cheney (The Washington Post)

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) ran for re-election fulling realizing that winning isn't everything. That surely counts as a personal victory.

She was not one of the handful of Republicans who crossed the aisle to support the infrastructure bill; she was a no on that. Cheney has the calm detachment of a physician questioning a patient to confirm a diagnosis. She is admirable and maddening. She also has a way of delivering good news and making it sound like a prologue to the apocalypse. And then, when a hearing finishes, she gives generous hugs to the witnesses. 6 committee, one of only two Republicans on the panel, she has confronted Trump’s allies with facts and for that she has paid a tremendous political price, forced to wander in the political wilderness where she was befriended by Democrats aghast at right wing lies while also aghast at their sudden admiration for Cheney. She infuriated the new Republican Party, the one that has pledged its allegiance to former president Donald Trump, traffics in election lies and is laying waste to democratic traditions. She faced the cameras and the microphones. On recent bold face agenda items for the Biden administration, she has been a firm “nay.” To say that she’s been a splash of cold water would suggest that her votes have been out of character, a shock to the system. And so there she was on her fateful primary day dressed like an all-American Every Woman who was dutifully squeezing in a vote between grocery shopping and a video call with the office. She is exceptional and privileged. She was dressed in a manner that signifies regular folk, but of course, there’s nothing common about being part of a political dynasty.

During the 2020 campaign, Mr Trump won the largest margin in Wyoming. He added that it is a "wonderful result for America". Most of the candidates Mr Trump has backed this election season have triumphed in a sign, his supporters say, of his continued sway over the party. Ms Cheney, a three-term conservative congresswoman, used her campaign to keep attention on Mr Trump's actions around the riot, and his continued false claims about fraud in the 2020 election, in a bid to persuade fellow Republicans the former president is a threat to democracy. Ms Cheney, 56, has been one of the most outspoken Trump critics in the Republican Party and was one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Mr Trump in 2021 following the 6 January Capitol riots. Harriet Hageman beats Cheney after the congresswoman's continued criticism of the Republican Party and Donald Trump.

During her concession speech, Ms Cheney also criticised Republican attempts to defend Mr Trump after the FBI executed a search warrant on his home at Mar-a-Lago. So far, the only two Republicans who voted to impeach Mr Trump to win their primaries are Representative David Valadao of California, who faces a tough general election race, and Dan Newhouse of Washington. She was also one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Mr Trump for his role in the riot. In June, Representative Tom Rice of South Carolina lost his primary to the Trump-endorsed Russell Fry. Earlier this month, freshman Representative Peter Meijer of Michigan lost his primary to John Gibbs, as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee highlighted Mr Gibbs’s pro-Trump bona fides. The vice-chair of the House January 6 panel faced retribution from state voters for going against the former president.

Critics of the ex-president declared Cheney the moral victor. Trump wrote on his social media platform: “Liz Cheney should be ashamed of herself, the way she acted, and her spiteful, sanctimonious words and actions towards others. Now she can finally disappear into the depths of political oblivion where, I am sure, she will be much happier than she is right now. “Our republic relies upon the goodwill of all candidates for office to accept honorably the outcome of elections. She also warned that supporters of Trump’s “big lie” about voter fraud are currently running for state offices. I called her to concede the race. “It would have required that I enabled his ongoing efforts to unravel our democratic system and attack the foundations of our republic. And I well understood the potential political consequences of abiding by my duty. She was watched by family members including her parents Dick and Lynne. In the suburbs of the state capital of Cheyenne earlier, a group of Republicans were knocking on doors in a show of last-minute support for Ms Cheney - something they clearly accepted was an uphill battle. In her concession speech, Ms Cheney made clear she would not let up in her criticism of Mr Trump, who has been hinting he may run for the White House again in 2024. Elsewhere, Republican Sarah Palin - who is eyeing a political comeback - has advanced to November's election in Alaska in the race to represent the state in the House of Representatives. And on Wednesday morning, she told NBC's "Today" show that she is "thinking about" running for president and will make a decision in "the coming months." Cheney was by far the most prominent of the 10 House Republicans to vote in January 2021 for Trump's impeachment. And I well understood the potential political consequences of abiding by my duty," she said. Weeks after that speech, Cheney was elusive when asked about the possibility of running for president in 2024. This is a fight for all of us, together." Several people said they felt Cheney devoted far more time on national issues -- to the detriment of her focusing on energy and natural resource priorities of critical importance to the state. "It took a lot of courage to stand against the Republican Party and Donald Trump." Wyoming Republicans' reservations about Cheney were first evident in 2016, when she won her House seat after winning just 39% of the vote in the GOP primary against a fractured field. But she was right on the policies," he said. Cheney attempted to assemble a coalition of Democrats, independents and moderate and anti-Trump Republicans -- many of them ideological opponents of the neoconservative congresswoman before the last 19 months -- to save her seat. But the conservative faction has seized control of the state Republican Party and many of its local organizations. Cheney's ouster caps a summer in which Trump has purged the GOP of many of his critics, while elevating candidates -- including Hageman -- who have parroted his lies about widespread election fraud.

Speaking to CNN’s Jake Tapper recently, however, Ms Cheney confirmed that: “We anticipate talking to additional members of the president’s Cabinet. “Those of us who believe in Republican principles and ideals have a responsibility to try to lead the party back to what it can be.” Because Republicans cannot both be loyal to Donald Trump and loyal to the Constitution.” “And I’ll make a decision about ’24 down the road.” She serves as vice-chair of the panel. If she decides not to run, she will use her PAC money to support non-Trump candidates in 2022 and 2024.” The lie that the 2020 presidential election was stolen is insidious — it preys on those who love their country,” Ms Cheney said in the closing-argument clip. “America cannot remain free if we abandon the truth.

[Carol Adelman](https://www.hudson.org/experts/2-carol-adelman), 76, who hired a 22-year-old Cheney for the US Agency for International Development, said that “of course” she would like see Cheney run for the White House in 2024. It has proved a winning formula in primaries that reward the loudest voices but could yet backfire on the party in the midterm elections, where centrist voters are put off by extremism. But Adam Kinzinger, Cheney’s Republican colleague on the January 6 committee, is confident that she will not yield. She is one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach him: eight have lost their primary or retired, while only two stand a chance of surviving to the next Congress. For now, Trump will feel that Tuesday demonstrated that revenge is a dish best served Maga. But if the field is crowded and divided, for example between Trump, the Florida governor, Ron DeSantis, and former vice-president Mike Pence, she could make a symbolic impact in the “moderate” lane. The journeys of these two fiftysomething women neatly sum up where the Republican party is at. If Trump’s not seeking the nomination, he’ll still get to select the nominee. Liz Cheney vs Donald Trump: Why it's not over yet (BBC News)

Donald Trump says Republican voters sent Liz Cheney to "political oblivion" with her crushing election defeat at the hands of a candidate he endorsed.

Despite the adulation Cheney is getting today from Democrats, she is a conservative, anti-abortion Republican who voted with Donald Trump 93% of the time when he was in the White House. Wyoming may not be the template for the rest of the country. She says she hears from Republicans who were proud to vote for the former president but now say they are done with Trump because of all the drama. Clearly Liz Cheney isn't planning to retire quietly to the mountains of Jackson Hole. She wouldn't even need to be a candidate because she already has name recognition and cable news hosts are longing to book her. So I was a little taken aback by the vehemence of his email celebrating congresswoman Cheney's defeat to a Trump-backed candidate in her primary race on Tuesday. She's spoken about the bravery of the women who have testified in the 6 January hearings, contrasting them with the men who didn't speak up. And she could be part of it. But beating Trump herself is not what matters to Cheney. His cows had escaped and he needed help to get them back, I was the only person on horseback at the time. She has burned too many bridges with millions of Trump supporters. But not so fast - here's how one of the former president's biggest critics could still hurt him if he runs for re-election.

She’s evidence that people can be flawed in all sorts of ways, but still act with bravery and integrity when the time comes. That demonstrates the kind of integrity which most tribalists would struggle to understand, let alone replicate. And they knew they stood little chance of winning an election as an independent in the British system. And the answer to that is: yes. Hageman secured 66.3 per cent of the vote to Cheney’s 28.9 per cent. Unlike most of her Republican colleagues, Liz Cheney voted to impeach Donald Trump over the insurrection. In 2019, when Boris Johnson was trying to unlawfully suspend parliament so he could force through a no-deal Brexit, certain key figures in the Conservative Party stood up to him. Because they are, at the moment, two of the bravest figures in American politics. Summer trundles on, the lovely weather only marginally ruined by the knowledge that it is the result of imminent environmental and societal collapse. So, if you like to keep things simple, that should be the end of the story. He was a key figure behind the invasion of Iraq, the widespread use of wiretapping and the reintroduction of torture to American policy.

When Hannity sought to clarify that she was alleging Cheney had “just said ‘Hello, Harriet’ and then hung up,” Hageman reiterated: “That was the end of the call, yes.” She made the one effort and all she said was ‘Hello, Harriet.’ And then that was the end of it,” Hageman said. It includes only one message directly from Cheney, though they said Hageman’s team received other communications from elsewhere in the defeated incumbent’s campaign. Cheney added that she never heard back from Hageman. “It is about 8:13 on Tuesday the 16th, I’m calling to concede the election and congratulate you on the win. The message as played on-screen contains only Cheney’s two-word greeting before sound cuts off for more than 10 more seconds.

Mr Biden had called the Wyoming congresswoman and Trump critic as the 45th president wasted no time in taking a victory lap, Bloomberg reported.

What next for Liz Cheney? (Reaction)

The Republican veteran is the last true conservative in a wilderness of nativism, personality cults, and anti-government paranoia.

It’s not Cheney who has abandoned her party but, rather, the party that abandoned her. For Cheney, however, her challenge is to cut out a political career in a landscape where she’s now a pariah: too conservative to join the Democrats, too anti-Trump for the Republicans. Biden is notoriously bipartisan, believing in a politics based on concessions and cross-party agreements, and it might appeal to his vision of America if traditional conservative voices are not entirely frozen out. That left a path to the White House for Bill Clinton who won with just 43 per cent of the vote, the lowest since 1912 when the big beast Teddy Roosevelt shook things up with his Progressive Party (Wilson won with a 41.8 per cent share). As Speaker of the House in the 90s, Gingrich ensured that this nasty attitude became habitual, turning politics into a bloodsport, and although Cheney has thrived in the atmosphere that prevailed thereafter (there were few more bruising players than her father), Trump has now taken it to a place where she could not follow. It is also unlikely but not entirely unfeasible that Joe Biden might make room for her in his administration or offer her a role in wider government. She has really helped me to decode the ideological currents informing all the different sectors of the attack.” Though she clearly hopes that the Republican Party will eventually come around and cleanse itself of the Trump toxin, it’s hard at this stage to believe that’s an inevitability. To that end, she still has work to do on the 6th January Committee. There was no surprise that Cheney lost her primary in Wyoming, winning just 28.9 per cent of the vote she’d previously won by a whopping 73 per cent in 2020. Wyoming is home to Crook County, a fairly flat stretch of land with a very peculiar feature: a spire of solid rock that erupts out of the ground to a height of more than 1,000 feet. Liz Cheney came face-to-face with the alien host that has wholly taken over her Republican Party.

Liz Cheney vs Donald Trump: Why it's not over yet (BBC News)

Liz Cheney just got trounced by a Trump-backed candidate - but the ex-president's critic isn't going away.
