Rampant Emma Raducanu races past Victoria Azarenka in Cincinnati (The Guardian)

Emma Raducanu followed up her win against Serena Williams with a 6-0, 6-2 thrashing of Victoria Azarenka in Cincinnati.

At 33 years old and with her stagnant ranking of 22, Azarenka is even further removed from her days as a top player than Williams, her run to the 2020 US Open final an anomaly in the six years since she was a top–10 player. She sprayed unforced errors and moved sluggishly, and finished the first set with just four winners to 16 errors in the first set alone. You know how difficult the wins are to come by,” she said. When Azarenka contested the US Open final in 2020, Raducanu was studying for her exams, dreaming of one day joining her on those stages. “I think I have tried a lot of things, and this year I think some matches, I have lost a lot of matches from leading situations and probably just played too tense,” she said. It became immediately clear that there would be no hangover as she broke Azarenka’s serve in the opening game and ran with the lead, hugging the baseline and robbing time from the Belarusian with her early ball-striking while offering few errors.

Emma Raducanu says 'people will talk regardless' after hammering ... (Eurosport.co.uk)

Emma Raducanu thrashed Victoria Azarenka for the loss of two games at the Cincinnati Open as the Briton looks in-form ahead of her US Open title defence.

Raducanu was looking composed in the face of her opponent's obvious difficulties, although it was hard to gauge how much of the remarkably one-sided match was down to her quality or the paucity of Azarenka's play. "I was playing a great match for sure. The Belarussian took a lengthy bathroom break at the end of the set but it was more one-way traffic when she re-emerged, with Raducanu's wide serve on the deuce side - as it had been against Williams - winning her a slew of free points. By the ninth game Azarenka had won just six points on serve in total, and it was painful viewing as a double fault saw the 33-year-old go 3-0 down in the second set. And Azarenka was broken every time she stepped up to the line, looking uncertain on her serve in the face of Raducanu's fearsome returning, with the 19-year-old sealing the opener 6-0 in just 27 minutes. Azarenka bellowed to herself that she just wanted to get "one ball in court" as a mistake-laden display - containing 16 unforced errors - gave her no chance against Raducanu's efficiency, especially on serve where the Brit won 16 points to her opponent's paltry five.
