Marvel Studios navigates the tricky landscape of a half-hour live-action comedy series featuring CGI characters in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, ...
But hey, perhaps viewers who love network-style sitcoms and procedural shows will get more of a kick out of the whole thing, and perhaps She-Hulk: Attorney at Law will markedly improve after episode four. [Marvel](https://www.denofgeek.com/marvel/) MCU shows, the end credits shine brightly yet again, with the art giving us some good-humored context for Jen’s new life as She-Hulk. The later procedural stuff is also kinda interminable, with a succession of There are plenty of MCU connections in the first episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and most of them are weaved in via Bruce filling in some Phase 3 gaps for us. She is able to control her Hulk situation a lot more easily, she is still basically herself when in Hulk form, and she has no intention of being a superhero. Episode one is different to the rest, and sticks to Jen’s origin story before the series becomes its true procedural self. Bruce references his origin story as Edward Norton and several moments in The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron while discussing how he was historically able to transition from Banner to the Hulk and back again. It’s not just that this vibe feels dated as all hell, it also speaks to how far behind the MCU is with female superhero representation that it feels the need to catch up in such a lazy and clichéd way. Not for nothing, that famous image of Oscar Isaac eating Cheetos with chopsticks also sprung to mind when Jen was praising the virtues of the technique with Bruce. The bulk of the premiere then focuses on Jen first learning to cope with her powers, and Bruce testing her limits. Some of the messaging in this show is as subtle as a boulder being thrown your way. [Jennifer Walters](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/she-hulk-comics-history-mcu/) (Tatiana Maslany) as she is practicing a terrific closing argument for an upcoming case.

"Captain America FU—" And the scene cuts to black, because while Jen may break the fourth wall like Deadpool, this is still the MCU and nobody is allowed to actually swear. The episode winds up as Jen goes back to her life as a lawyer, her hopes of keeping her new alter ego a secret swiftly dashed in a superpowered courtroom incident. With this being a She-Hulk show, this extra tag decides to avoid those usual Marvel trappings to answer the most important question of our times: did Captain America actually get some? "Why do people think he's a virgin? "Yessss I knew it!" But then we cut to a post-credits scene, which will undoubtedly introduce some shocking new cameo or twist to the story, right? In short, Shulkie agrees with Chris Evans, believing him to be a virgin. and again when he grew out his beard for Infinity War... and again when he pulled down that helicopter with his arm...
Marvel's latest show on Disney+ introduces Bruce Banner's cousin (and comedy) to the MCU. Here's what to read after you've turned green with laughter.
(Slott teases something called the Reckoning War in his She-Hulk comics; that wouldn’t come to fruition until the very end of his Fantastic Four run, earlier this year. The idea that She-Hulk would work in an office that specializes in superhuman legal cases comes from this mid-2000s series written by Dan Slott, who’d go on to make his name with an extensive run as Marvel’s primary Spider-Man writer. If there’s a breakthrough project for She-Hulk, it’s Sensational She-Hulk, a stealth reboot of the entire character that established her as a comedy hero.

For Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany), that query comes quite literally as she's gifted with the powers of a Hulk. To be a Hulk — like her cousin, Bruce Banner ...
Her new powers have made clear how unfairly she’s been treated, and now she has the ability to do something about it. Good for She-Hulk for being the first MCU superhero to use her powers for horniness. But her new success brings to light the way Jen has been continually overlooked and taught to undercut herself. One is about recognizing what you owe other people; the other is about recognizing what we owe ourselves. If given the choice to live a superhero’s life, she would ask if it offered health care (the Avengers famously do not). Perhaps I’m naive, but I’d hope that someone tuning into She-Hulk and wanting to enjoy it would know that cat-calling a woman on the street is not good behavior. In the first four episodes critics were given, there are plots in which Jen has to figure out the legal ramifications of supervillain parole or how to serve a cease and desist to unlicensed magic users. We’ll see how far Marvel wants to go in examining the sexist world She-Hulk pushes back against. She-Hulk's Disney+ show hinted that Jennifer Walters could be stronger than her cousin, Bruce Banner, in the MCU.
That means Hulk could end up with the edge still, even though it looks like She-Hulk is actually stronger than him onscreen. Based off this first episode of She-Hulk, it seems safe to say that Jen would probably win a de-Hulked fight with her cousin in the MCU too. Jen can also do the same, of course, but she does lack the scientific know-how that could come in handy. On top of that, Jen's already Bruce's match in training as well, which is pretty impressive considering that he has 15 years of experience on her. He-Hulk has long been considered as one of the strongest there is when it comes to the MCU. In fact, many fans would assume that his Hulk is actually the strongest because he's the original. In later movies, Hulk lost a fight against Tony Stark's Hulkbuster, which probably wouldn't happen in the comics, plus Thor and Thanos have both beaten him since too. She-Hulk's ability to control that rage for the most part is also what might hold her back in an all-out brawl between the two cousins. [She-Hulk's](https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a40871050/she-hulk-review-disney-plus/) origin story in the [MCU](https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/a28084501/mcu-release-order-marvel-movies/) shares a lot of parallels with the source material. Naturally, this makes Hulk green in more ways than one, and after it becomes obvious that Jen's not the novice he expected her to be, Bruce even admits his own jealousy. In the comics, she once defeated a Thanos copy which had all the same powers and strength as the original one. In the end, there's no clear winner, and the pair make up by fixing their broken bar to get drunk again.

She-Hulk has a 90% critic score with 255 reviews in and 77% audience score, which isn’t great (it’s the lowest among MCU shows at the moment), but it’s not as intensive of a bombing run as what’s being shown on IMDB. So yes, as ever, this kind of review bombing is incredibly childish and stupid. I also thought the comedy and fourth wall-breaking worked, but I’m certainly curious to see more and how the show develops now that Jennifer is back in lawyer mode. And as I posted last time, here’s what this curve looks like for a “just okay” series like Falcon and the Winter Soldier that no one is bombing: Yes, more than a third of all reviews for She-Hulk are 1 star, which makes its current IMDB score 5.4 out of 10, the lowest of all the MCU series. Marvel is still at a 6.2 with 19.9% 1 star reviews, so it’s not like IMDB every really goes and tries to sort through these kinds of bombing campaigns. All I have to do is consult the last article I wrote about this, which shows what review bombing actually looks like, where it’s taking place on Marvel, and what has not happened to the same extent with other MCU series. In fact, this is actually worse than what happened with Ms. - Hawkeye – 1.5% - She-Hulk – 35.8% - Loki – 1.5%

So, the fun for me was in finding how she physically moves through space differently. The duality of the two bodies the character inhabits is a compelling facet of the series as well, says Maslany.
She-Hulk: Attorney At Law director and executive producer Kat Coiro sits down with STARBURST to discuss all things big and green.
We’ve talked a lot about the representation of women and women’s bodies and how She-Hulk breaks a lot of new ground. Watching her come into her own and accept that this has happened to her and that it’s okay to take it to great heights and use her powers for good, that’s a journey I find fascinating. We talked a lot about the idea of imposter syndrome and how many women struggle with this idea that they don’t deserve the power they have or are not worthy of this power. We also had on our set a woman who is six-foot-seven, who was our body double and reference. We wanted her to be sexy and fun and to start to enjoy this liberty and this ability to live life differently. What can you tell us about creating the show’s tone and how it differs from the rest of the MCU?

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law premiered on Disney+ earlier today and introduced Titania, a supervillain who often clashed with Jennifer Walters in the comics.
Titania has already popped up in animated series like Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. Titania is the new villain introduced in the MCU in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Episode 1. Best known for portraying Tahani Al-Jamil in The Good Place, Jamil has recently voiced Wonder Woman in 2022’s DC League of Super-Pets. English artist Jameela Jamil portrays Titania in the character’s first-live action adaptation. She appeared in the story when she attacked Jennifer during a court case. In the comics, Titania’s real name is Mary MacPherran.
In the new MCU show, Bruce Banner's cousin Jennifer Walters becomes a Hulk, but rather than be a superhero, she wants to keep being a lawyer.
The IRL actor and fictional Jen share a love of eating • Jen’s origin story is a bit different here than it is in the comics. This makes sense to me, and not in a #girlboss or “girls mature faster” or “backward and in heels” kind of way. In the post-credits scene, Jen fakes being drunk so she can get Bruce plastered and finally learn the dirty deets about Captain Rogers — who Bruce confirms hooked up with a girl on the USO tour back in the 1940s. “The beauty of television is we have the time and the space to spend time with the character,” the Emmy-winning EP adds of the [Tatiana Maslany](https://deadline.com/tag/tatiana-maslany/) starring superhero series. Also in the well-paced mix is Good Place vet Jameela Jamil as a costumed influencer (to put it mildly), plus Ginger Gonzaga as Walters/She-Hulk’s BFF and paralegal and fellow superhuman division lawyer Augustus Pugliese, played by Josh Segarra. The EP also gives us a sense where She-Hulk could end up next in potential future seasons and those dual Avengers flicks announced at Comic-Con last month. In that context, the show sees appearances from Mark Ruffalo as the Bruce Banner cousin of Maslany’s Los Angeles lawyer Jennifer Walters, Tim Roth back in his Abomination role from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk movie, and more of Dr. Take a listen to our convo with Jessica this morning here — and yes, there’s more on that Steve Rogers sex talk. Sure, it felt a bit fast and that lends to the ‘Mary Sue’ analysis, but I think it was more about expediency than anything. But I remain irritated that modern TV writers seem to think that creating a “strong female character” requires her to be constantly contrasted favorably against the men around her, instead of just existing as an interesting character in her own right. I’m not sold on the show yet but I’m not turned off, either. Some of the stuff that happens to the female characters in this show likely has happened to real women in the real world. I incorporated this into a story I was working on and my creative writing instructor told me it was too unbelievable to work in the context of my story. It just comes atop a pile of unnecessary baggage the show would be better off without. The CGI is fine and as the story progresses we get some interesting new conflicts and cameos. Instead of making us question inequality in the workplace or the dangers of misogyny, we’re given such outrageous examples that in the end we just feel detached from them. And while it may seem, at first blush, like Walters is a bit of a ‘Mary Sue’ in the series premiere—where she can do everything the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) had to spend over a decade learning in a day—we quickly learn that her troubles are far from over, and that her super-powers will lead to some setbacks as well. She may have put up with more annoying men but he’s a superhero almost definitionally angry all the time, whose rage is both his power and his curse. But it’s like that woman in the park telling her toddler she doesn’t love him. When I was younger, we were at zoo and I overheard a frustrated mother say to her young, misbehaving child, “I don’t love you anymore!” It was shocking and terrible, though almost certainly just a reaction from an exhausted and frazzled parent who (one hopes) regretted ever saying it (even if she meant it in that moment).

The fight between Hulk and She-Hulk towards the end of She-Hulk episode one isn’t just bad because of hurried CGI. But whereas traditional pre-streaming TV would find ways to adapt to the medium’s budgetary limitations – namely by scaling back set-pieces, reusing sets and locations, eschewing big-name actors, and settling for cheaper practical effects when required – She-Hulk instead tries to approximate the production value of Marvel’s blockbuster movies. You get the impression it’s a miracle the special effects end up remotely usable at all. “They’re a horrible client, and I’ve seen way too many colleagues break down after being overworked, while Marvel tightens the purse strings.” Many have rushed to defend the VFX houses that Marvel employs to implement its many special effects; they have argued that the blame falls squarely at Marvel’s feet. Is Captain America a virgin? Episode one of Marvel series She-Hulk addresses Marvel mystery in hysterical post-credits scene on Disney Plus.
which many [Marvel](https://metro.co.uk/tag/marvel/) fans were likely wondering for years. Having mastered all of her cousin’s training activities, from dialectical behaviour therapy to cliff punches, Jennifer decides she’s going to go back to her life in the real world as a lawyer – but a fight with Bruce ensues when he tries to make her stay. However, while in court, about to deliver her closing argument in a case, she’s forced to reveal her She-Hulk self to the world when a superpowered influencer called Titania (Jameela Jamil) smashes into the courtroom, causing havoc and destruction. When Bruce first takes Jennifer to Mexico, he’s under the impression that she’ll be in the same boat as he was when he first became Hulk – unable to control her transformations and battling with an alter ego for years. Bruce – now in the Smart Hulk form fans first met in Endgame – takes his cousin to a hideaway in Mexico, a facility built for him by Tony, boasting an impressive underground lab. After Jennifer’s first transformation into She-Hulk, she winds up at a bar, where a group of women enthusiastically help fix her up in the bathroom when they find her in a state of disarray. She explained to her cousin that given how busy he was as Captain America – going from a war to being frozen in ice, dealing with multiple world-ending disasters and being on the run as a fugitive – she reckons he must have been a virgin (assuming no one knows that Steve reunited with his love Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter at the end of Avengers: Endgame). While Bruce is initially reluctant to divulge any intimate details about his friend, in the post-credits scene for She-Hulk episode one, he finally relents when Jennifer goes on a drunken spiel about how sad it is that Cap – with ‘that ass’ – never got to have sex. Given that Bruce's arms device was blinking after the car crash, it appears that it was either partially or completely damaged, thus explaining why he reverted to Hulk form. The origin story portion of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’s premiere episode, “A Normal Amount of Rage,” began with showing Bruce Banner on a road trip with his cousin, Jennifer Walters, played by Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany. During the five-year gap between Thanos’ snap and the Mad Titan’s genocide being undone, Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce found a way to combine his intelligence and personality with Hulk’s physique, and Smart Hulk was born! How Jennifer Walters can go from feeble to Hulk in the blink of an eye—which barely helps her when she's faced with the law? In her comics catalog, Jennifer Walters never wanted to be a superhero, but she still wanted to spend her career helping people. As a superhero lawyer, is there not an obvious story here about how difficult it is to help people in this world when you are so defenseless yourself? The comic book origin story of Jennifer Walters, the She-Hulk, now starring in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law on Disney Plus. From Stan Lee and The Incredible ...
And the confluence of these two modes has made Jennifer Walters into an extremely rare sight in pop culture: a highly feminine character who still gets to be incredibly smart, incredibly strong, incredibly confident, and incredibly funny. Slott’s series wasn’t exactly about the different ways women move through the world based on physical appearance or fame, but it was about Jen learning to feel proud of herself even when she wasn’t 7 feet tall and bench pressing a truck. And it’s the mixture of these two modes that the creators of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law chose for their series. Jennifer Walters, the slight, mild-mannered criminal defense attorney who transformed into the Amazonian-proportioned (and scantily clad) She-Hulk when she got angry, would be the last new Marvel Comics superhero Lee would create for over a decade. Her origin — and first solo book, The Savage She-Hulk (issue 1 by Stan Lee and John Buscema, all other issues by David Anthony Kraft and Mike Vosburg) — was classic Marvel. Shows like Wonder Woman and The Six Million Dollar Man climbed ratings charts to cultural saturation, and Marvel was not left out of the glut.
