Bristol City vs Cardiff City live: Updates from Ashton Gate (Bristol Live)

Allt he build-up, live match action and reaction as the Robins take on Cardiff in the Severnside derby.

The striker whips it in with his left-foot and Conway glances a superb header into the corner. He catches it sweetly but it takes a wicked deflection and flies wide of the right post. The corner comes in and Bentley's then caught off guard... It's too easy as a ball over the top feeds Mark Watters. City head into the tunnel ahead thanks to Conway's superb header... Huge cries for a handball but the referee isn't interested. He glances in his header from close range and Ashton Gate is rocking! I actually think the official has been really good today. We’re not saying that we’ve brought a player in so he's here to replace you, we’ll play the best player. He’s a brilliant athlete, you’ll have seen him more than me over the years and he’s doing brilliantly but we don’t get too carried away.” It's also three undefeated for Pearson's side following the cup victory over Coventry and the draw at Wigan. But as I said to him at the end of the game there, fantastic, but again it’s consistency.

Bristol City v Cardiff City - Live updates (WalesOnline)

Cardiff City head to Ashton Gate to take on Bristol City in the Severnside derby this lunchtime.

Rubin Colwill and Jaden Philogene at least tried to inject a bit of potency into the Bluebirds' attack. Kal Naismith floated in a lovely free-kick and Rob Atkinson always looked the most likely to win it - and he did just that. And Cardiff were lucky not to go into the break two goals behind. The Robins were hitting Cardiff with diagonal balls all afternoon and it soon proved telling. Joe Williams sent one stinging, low effort careering towards the bottom corner before a deflection took it just wide of the mark. It meant a little reshuffle and as a result, the visitors struggled to find their feet. The hosts burst up the other end of the field and took the lead shortly before half-time. The best chance came by virtue of a beautiful, arced ball over the top from Cedric Kipre, straight into the path of Max Watters. The striker only had the goalkeeper to beat, but his one-v-one chance was saved by Dan Bentley and tipped over the bar. The second time in as many matches that has happened to a Bluebirds left-back. Celebrations were muted, though, as the referee rightly awarded Cardiff a free-kick. They just didn't look themselves and the Robins didn't really allow them to play.

Bristol City team news as Callum O'Dowda returns to Ashton Gate ... (BristolWorld)

Birthday-boy Nigel Pearson makes the decision to play Alex Scott in defence to combat O'Dowda.

Former Crawley Town striker Max Watters is on the bench. Cedric Kipre returns to their starting XI after missing the draw with West Bromwich Albion due to them being his parent club. Alex Scott, who partnered Han-Noah Massengo in the middle against the Hatters, is expected to move into the right wing-back spot, as Williams comes into the centre.

BRISTOL CITY 1-1 CARDIFF CITY - NATHAN SALT AT ASHTON GATE: Conway gave Nigel Pearson's side the lead before Atkinson nodded home a header inside the ...

No team has conceded more goals in the second half of games in the Championship than Bristol City this season. On the stroke of half-time Cardiff were convinced they were level when Callum O’Dowda, booed with every touch on his return to these parts, fizzed a cross in and Sheyi Ojo bundled in. That was about as good as it got for those in blue. The clean sheet never really looked in doubt. Andi Weimann got his follow-up effort all wrong and send it careering into the away fans behind the goal. How Morrison would have wished to have had 20-year-old Bristol City striker Tommy Conway in his team. Pearson will just hope those sniffing around Conway were watching another channel with the TV cameras in town. Here was yet another limp, anaemic attacking performance as Cardiff were roundly beaten in the Severnside derby. No arm round the shoulder here. There's no one else there at the minute. Bristol City 2-0 Cardiff City: Tommy Conway and Robert Atkinson strike to seal all three points for Nigel Pearson's side... The most damning thing of all?

Tommy Conway and Rob Atkinson fire Bristol City to derby win ... (The Guardian)

Goals from Tommy Conway and Rob Atkinson gave Bristol City a 2-0 Championship victory against Cardiff City in the Severnside derby at Ashton Gate.

“They are getting in there, but have to put the ball in the back of the net. Dasilva risked conceding a penalty when bundling into the back of Romeo, but the referee Thomas Bramall saw nothing wrong. Han-Noah Massengo had the ball in the visitors’ net five minutes later, but his header from an Andreas Weimann cross was ruled out for a foul on Allsop. Cardiff thought they had equalised in first-half injury time, but Sheyi Ojo’s close-range finish from a cross by former Bristol winger Callum O’Dowda was disallowed for offside. Seconds later, Cedric Kipre shot wide at the end of a penetrating Cardiff move before the balance shifted again with Conway’s goal. “It was a good way to spend my birthday, a really hard-fought game,” Pearson said afterwards.

Posted: Sunday, August 21st 2022 • Rugby Kal Naismith did just that went he blocked O’Dowda’s effort, before Sawyers’s follow up was off-target. The Robins almost doubled their lead in some style when Weimann pulled away at the back post to be met from a well-worked free kick. The ball was spread wide to Wells and he crossed for Conway, who did superbly well to get ahead of his man and steer his header into the far corner. It was then time for Conway to capture the headlines as he bagged his fourth goal of the season in all competitions. Posted: Sunday, August 21st 2022

'It's nothing more than you want to see in a derby' - Bristol City ... (BristolWorld)

Nigel Pearson's right-hand man had his say on Bristol City's Severnside Derby win over Cardiff City.

“I think with the environment in what we’re trying to get with young players is where it’s led by the oldler players. He’s a leader, there is a lot more to him. They played some good stuff and cut us up a few times today and making those wrong decisions.
