Tributes to Middlesbrough FC 'legend' David Armstrong (The Northern Echo)

Tributes have been paid to former Middlesbrough midfielder David Armstrong who has died at the age of 67.

"The thoughts of everyone at SaintsFC go out to his loved ones." A tweet from the official Southampton FC twitter page said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the great David Armstrong, one of our finest ever midfielders. Hartlepool-born Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling tweeted: "David Armstrong was a warm and welcoming figure to me when I was a cub reporter in the North East, a fine footballer too. A spokesman for Middlesbrough FC said: "The thoughts of everyone connected with MFC are with his family and friends at this time." "Always took time out to speak to me back in the 80s when at Saints. Armstrong, who was born in Durham, featured almost 300 times for the Saints before a final season at Bournemouth from 1987-88.

FORMER Saints midfielder David Armstrong has died at the age of 67, the club have announced.

In total, he made 358 consecutive appearances for Boro during that time and scored 77 goals before moving to Saints for a fee of £600,000. He was an ever-present in the promotion-winning side of 1973-74 managed by Jack Charlton and holds the club record for the most consecutive league appearances with 305 between March 1973 and August 1980. Armstrong, widely regarded as one of the club's greatest ever players, made 272 appearances for Saints between 1981 and 1987, scoring 71 goals in that time.

That became one of the stronger points of my game and I definitely have David to thank a bit for that.” I certainly looked up to him as a footballer and as a mentor in the changing room. I definitely wasn’t a shouter and a screamer and an organiser of people. “I noticed that David was pretty laid back, he was pretty relaxed about everything,” Le Tissier explains. So as a young boy, it was really difficult to tell when he was being serious and when he was pulling your leg. "I was given the job of cleaning his and Joe Jordan’s boots - who was at the club as well. And with David still living in the area, I’ve managed to keep him in touch with him all these years as well.
