The parliament’s no-confidence vote in April that ousted Khan capped months of political turmoil and a constitutional crisis that required the Supreme Court to step in. In his latest speech Sunday night at a rally in the city of Rawalpindi outside of Islamabad, Khan said so-called “neutrals” were behind the recent crackdown against his party. In seeking Khan’s ouster earlier this year, the opposition had accused him of economic mismanagement as inflation soars and the Pakistani rupee plummets in value. The report against Khan includes testimony from Magistrate Judge Ali Javed, who described being at the Islamabad rally on Saturday and hearing Khan criticize the inspector-general of Pakistan’s police and another judge. Khan could face several years in prison from the new charges, which accuse him of threatening police officers and the judge. Khan himself appeared to still be free and had not immediately addressed the police charge sheet being lodged against him.

Khan is reportedly accused of making threats to the country's judiciary and police force.

In the week before his departure he violated the constitution in an attempt to stop the vote going ahead. A police report of the rally cited Khan’s comments that he “would not spare” Islamabad’s police chief and a female judge for the arrest of his aide. PTI went to court on Monday to challenge the charges against Khan. “Once he is arrested, I don’t think his party leadership can protest for more than three days. “We need to understand that Khan is the only face of his party and he is a charismatic leader and crowd puller,” he said. But when a political party strays from that path, the situation inside Pakistan, who will stop the public? “A plan has been made to place our party against the wall. I assure you, that the Sri Lankan situation is going to happen here,” Khan threatened, referencing the recent economic protests that toppled that island nation’s government. Chaudhry denied claims that Khan had left his house to avoid arrest. Typically, police then arrest and question the accused. Khan was elected as prime minister in 2018 as the “modern” face of Pakistan, who had the backing of the military and promised economic prosperity and an end to corruption. “The purpose of the speech was to spread terror amongst the police and the judiciary and prevent them from doing their duty,” police said in the report.

Pakistan's Imran Khan charged: What happens next? (Aljazeera.com)

Removed leader must appear before an anti-terrorism court to face charges after allegedly 'threatening' officials.

He has to appear before court, submit his bail bond, and it is quite likely he will be given an additional bail of few more days,” he said. But we must keep in mind that anti-terrorism cases in Pakistan are usually not on merit and it is used as a political tool,” added Niazi. Politically, however, any such step could result in fanning the flames further. Police then arrest and question the accused. All of you must be ashamed,” Khan reportedly said. Simply saying ‘we will take action against you’ does not amount to terrorism. We got a boot from behind [to follow orders]’,” Khan said in his address. “It is perfect case of quashment before the high court. Such acts of brazen thuggery are responsible for instigating extremism in society. Police have denied the torture allegations. Imran Niazi will have to face the law for threatening and hurling abuses at the Magistrate and Police officers. He accused police of torturing Gill in custody and said the charges against his ally were part of “a conspiracy” to pit his party against the military.

The streets of Islamabad, and especially around Imran Khan's residence, were today taken over by hundreds of followers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf political formation who sought to prevent the arrest of the charismatic leader of populist tendencies while clamouring against the government of the new prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif. During his speech - in a rally that was also broadcast in real time - on Saturday night, Imran Khan called for the support of the army after denouncing the "torture" and abuses to which, according to former Prime Minister Shahbaz Gill, another Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader, accused of sedition and arrested on 9 August, is being held in police custody. Less than three days after his arrest, and a few months after the massive demonstrations in which thousands of supporters of the former prime minister -now dismissed- marched to Islamabad to demand the calling of new general elections, Imran Khan has once again aroused indignation among his followers.

Imran Khan: Pakistan police charge ex-PM under terrorism act (BBC News)

Police investigators say the former leader made threats against state officials following a political rally.

It's one of a handful of times the new government has been divided over their stance on Mr Khan, government insiders have told the BBC. The so-called Imran Khan versus the government fight is coming to a head. There has been no proof of this political witch hunt, but that hasn't stopped party loyalists from believing it. Hundreds of the former prime minister's supporters gathered outside his home in Islamabad after news of the investigation broke. After a series of defections, he lost his majority in parliament. Some within the government worry this is too high a price to pay.
