Aston Villa travel to Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday night looking to secure progress in the Carabao Cup (ko 7.45pm). Steven Gerrard's side face the League One ...
Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as Steven Gerrard's side prepare to face Bolton in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
In the wing-back roles, Evatt could start Kieran Sadlier and Declan John on the right and left respectively. [BirminghamLive's Villa reporter Ashley Preece writes](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/aston-villa-team-news-bolton-24821279) : "One player who could feature is young goal ace Cameron Archer who, last season, bagged four goals in two Carabao Cup games against Barrow and Chelsea. Evatt could name the same back three which started the loss to Sheffield Wednesday in the form of Gethin Jones, Ricardo Santos and George Johnston. Dion Charles could start the encounter upfront alongside Dapo Afolayan." [Villa](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/all-about/aston-villa-fc) are one of the 13 Premier League teams entering the competition at this stage. Ashley Young could also come in at right-back with Calum Chambers and Tyrone Mings the pairing at centre-back and, at left-back, Ludwig Augustinsson will be pushing for his debut. "Into midfield and Gerrard could well look for a big reaction from John McGinn. Boubacar Kamara could also retain his place - ahead of Marvelous Nakamba and Tim Iroegbunam - given his importance while, next to him, Douglas Luiz will be a favourite to come back into the starting XI. Here's how we rated Ian Evatt's side in the Carabao Cup clash against the Villans.
Got forward at tiimes down the left flank to support attacks and deliver crosses. Teed up Charles for opening goal in great performance from veteran midfielder. Booked in opening stages for foul on Ollie Watkins. A good performance from the skipper. Caught out of position for third goal but generally defensively solid. Made great stop from Ollie Watkins and had looked good inbetween the sticks early on, but should have done better for Douglas Luiz's equaliser.
The Whites suffered a 4-1 loss at the hands of the Villans.
We showed lots of good things, we showed lots of things that make us a really good team in our level, in our division and I think now we have to focus on the league.” “Of course but we’re playing against some of the Premier League’s best players - Coutinho has been at Barcelona and we’re talking about League One here, so we have to give them a break. “We’ve got to prepare for Plymouth and that’s it. “We wanted to go toe-to-toe and I thought for 60 minutes we did. “It’s a bit naive from us because we’re still pushing and wanting to try and get something out of the game and it could have ended up extremely harsh, but I think the scoreline does make it extremely harsh really. I think it’s easy for lower league teams coming against Premier League opposition to sacrifice, back off, try and block up and hang on but that’s not we do or the way we play.
WANDERERS bowed out of the Carabao Cup to Aston Villa… but with heads held high.
And Wanderers deserved the applause they were afforded as they walked off the pitch at the end. And with Coutinho still omnipresent in the final third of the pitch, it wasn’t long before the Premier League men started to break through with regularity. With 25 minutes left to play it could have been a procession from there – but to their credit, they continued to work until there was nothing left to give. Ings then did the same, only to be felled by Dixon, prompting referee Andrew Kitchen to point to the spot. The second half was more anchored in cold, hard reality. The effort told, eventually. They finished the half strong, Kachunga heading straight at Sanchez after more good work from Bradley and Afolayan. One save at the feet of Watkins shortly before Ings’ offside finish was especially smart. The reaction from both the home crowd and Evatt’s side was positive. His response was encouraging, helped, no doubt, by an early crunching challenge on Coutinho which brought a guttural roar from the Bolton support. Kachunga drove a low shot agonisingly wide, with Emiliano Martinez beaten, and John stung the keeper’s palms after another neat move down the left. All eyes, however, were on the household names starting for Gerrard.
Wanderers boss Ian Evatt saw his side run out of steam against Premier League Aston Villa but had no qualms with the performance.
For 60 minutes we were right in the game.” We have enjoyed tonight, a great learning curve.” We have got to prepare for Plymouth. It was a bit naïve from us because we were still pushing and wanting to get something out of the game and it could have been extremely harsh. “We started great with a high press. It gave them some belief back.
