A second-string Albion side crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the second hurdle to lower-ranked Derby County.

But even Albion's star attackers struggled to provide a much-needed spark for the visitors going forward. A derby injury took the sting out of the visitors' play but Cleary might have done better from a tight angle having proven too strong for his Rams defender. Dobbin was bright for Derby and flashed an effort just wide across goal after a surging run. The Rams were relegated to League One last season after heavy financial and ownership problems and Liam Rosenior's side have opened up with two wins, two draws and a defeat from their opening five games in the third tier. Albion created their fair share of presentable chances in an even and competitive first half but found the second period a struggle against a gutsy and busy Rams side. Louie Sibley's 15th-minute strike was the difference between the two sides - who made 17 changes from league action between them - on a low-key evening to forget for the visitors.

West Brom bowed out of the EFL Cup on Tuesday at the hands of League One side Derby County.

Struggled to make any kind of impact in the midfield in the first half. There were, like in the first round, aspects of Cleary's game to like. Ashworth lost out in the build up to Derby's opening goal and didn't recover as Sibley found the corner. Was quieter in the second half. Seemed to labour through the later stages of the game after picking up a knock. It was a struggle for Ingram on only his second senior start for the club - and his first since the lambs were sent for their Arsenal slaughter last year. They survived early pressure, and eventually began to get a foothold in the game. Not as eye catching here as he was in the first round. Reyes Cleary, leading the line again, popped up at times in the first half but often it wasn't in front of goal, as he'd peeled wide. Callum Robinson twisted and turned inside the area and got his shot away but the effort was saved by the legs of Wildsmith. The wily David McGoldrick showed his experience against novice Ethan Ingram to nick the ball and eventually win a corner after a recovering slide from Dara O'Shea. A ball over the top from Bartley was expertly collected by Reach and, with goalkeeper Wildsmith off his line, he attempted a lob with his weaker foot.
