The first two nights of the pop superstar's residency at Madison Square Garden was a triumphant example of his pure devotion to Too Much All The Time.
Never Josh!” At the end of the show, he told the crowd, “Make some noise for Josh, whatever kind of noise you want to make.” “Grapejuice” isn’t in the set, probably because of its tonsil-trashing high notes, but maybe it’ll be the “To Be So Lonely” of this tour—the fan fave that sneaks into the show by popular demand. Some spent “Matilda” having a meditative moment to themselves. Harry slowed it down for his two most soulful ballads: “Sign of the Times” and the new “Matilda.” They feel spiritually linked—two poetic songs about trauma, grief, and rebirth. And he does, from the tubular-bells synth groove of “As It Was” to the destructo-punk headbang of “Kiwi.” He ended with the rock & roll mosh-pit raunch of “Kiwi,” a song that never fails to make strong buildings quiver in terror—both nights, it turned the floor of Madison Square Garden into Jell-O. “We’re gonna find the golf dads. (No “Falling,” “Cherry,” “Fine Line,” not even “Lights Up.”) It’s a super-emotional show, even without the sad songs, because the will to uplift never quits. (At his very first NYC show, in 2017, it was “Kiwi” he did twice.) As he says in the Rolling Stone cover story, that moment was startling even for him. He’s back to performing in the round, or as he elegantly put it, “I’m gonna be in the middle of you all night!” This stage set means he has to cover more space, but nobody loves covering space like he does. Which leads me to the introduction to this very sad song.” (Who else could get away with using an ass-to-face disclaimer as a lead-in to a ballad as heart-wrenching as [“Matilda”](https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-admin/blank)? As he sings in the show opener “Daydreaming,” he wants to give you something to dream about.
The first two nights of a 15-concert run at Madison Square Garden were heavy on charisma, banter and nods to the past.
[“Fine Line.”](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/12/arts/music/harry-styles-camila-cabello-review.html) When the songs were … ZOLADZ I sometimes detect a divide between the music Styles wants to make — the big, bold, if somewhat generic-sounding ’70s-style rock of his first album — and the more pop-oriented fare that better suits his personality. CARAMANICA That was one of the musical high points, if not the peak. [stan army](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/25/arts/music/pop-music-superfans-stans.html) — and after catching Styles’s show on Sunday night, I’m ready to declare him the defining solo artist of that era, too. But I would describe the look he was going for, in a red-and-white-striped jumpsuit, as “sexy candy cane.” The fashion, the fans, the force of personality — it feels like we’re talking about everything but the music here, which is perhaps telling. And [“Sign of the Times,”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qN4ooNx77u0) the first Styles solo hit, was ponderous, a karaoke take on mid-1970s power-mope. But that approach wears thin in a solo act, and time and again during the Harry Styles show at the Garden on Saturday night, I found myself vexed. Despite all of the construction around Madison Square Garden, I had no difficulty finding the venue’s entrance: I just followed the trail of rainbow feathers shed from the signature Styles neckwear that at least half of the audience seemed to be sporting. Two New York Times critics attended the first two nights of his Love on Tour run in New York to see how he wielded his gravitational pull. Or maybe I liked what the group represented: a rejection of the hyperprocessed boy band, and by extension an acknowledgment that doing the least can still earn you the most. Over the weekend, Harry Styles began a 15-night stand at Madison Square Garden, an impressive feat befitting one of the most popular musicians in the world. (He’ll begin a similar stretch in October at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif.

Harry Styles surprised James Corden with Happy Birthday sing-a-long at his Madison Square Garden, New York, tour date.
I’m thrilled to be extending [for a year]. All I want is H to know he saved me and know my story and see my tattoos, 🤣,’ one other remarked. In a statement, he said: ‘It’s been a really hard decision to leave because I’m so immensely proud of the show. It was the best part of my birthday. Excitedly sharing a clip of the crowd bursting into song on Instagram, the presenter wrote: ‘I can’t believe you did this H! We love you so much.
The singer, 28, got the 18000-strong crowd to sing Happy Birthday to the talk show host, 44, who was celebrating his big day on Monday.
Corden then asked him to come in and he danced with the group while holding all of the pizzas. Say a proper hi and keep it together.' Grateful: Sharing the footage to Instagram, James wrote: 'I can’t believe you did this H! Corden then ran in and shouted, 'Stop! Then the girls' friends started arriving. They then set up for a slow motion shot. Sharing the footage to Instagram, James wrote: 'I can’t believe you did this H! His name is James. He then added, before breaking into song, 'If you don't want to, we can move on. Is that okay?' Are you ready? It was the best part of my birthday.
And in related news: Grindr has at long last been cancelled for homophobia.
Continuing the most insufferable bit of discourse on the internet, some people accused him of “queer-baiting” (essentially, pretending to be queer for profit when you’re not) – the implication being that Styles is really just a straight guy. [Sauvage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByNspjR-_AI) contains a harrowing depiction of sexual violence, but that hardly seems like the kind of thing to which Styles is referring, and what I remember most about [120 BPM ](/film-tv/article/39973/1/120-bpm-cast-interviews-aids-crisis-activism) is a heartbreaking scene where a character dying of AIDS-related illnesses receives a handjob from his lover in a hospital bed. “So much of gay sex in film is two guys going at it, and it kind of removes the tenderness from it,” he said. So unless Styles has access to a secret canon of raunchy queer cinema that the rest of us don’t know about, it seems safe to dismiss his comment as ill-informed. It was the suggestion that cinema suffers from an abundance of “two guys going at it” which provoked the most backlash, which is understandable – the claim doesn’t bear any scrutiny whatsoever. Based on a novel of the same, My Policeman is set in Brighton in the 1950s.
DAN WOOTTON: I'm increasingly uncomfortable with his attempts to insert himself in the so-called LGBT+ community with incessant references to the 'journey' ...
He answered curiously: ‘Being in a creative field, it’s important to be progressive. It’s weird for me — everyone should just be who they want to be. Would he like to elaborate? He told Rolling Stone: ‘I’ve never talked about my life away from work publicly and found that it’s benefited me positively. If someone takes a picture of you with someone, it doesn’t mean you’re choosing to have a public relationship or something.’ But that’s the problem with the new breed of celebrities who think that sexuality is just the latest field in which to express their creativity and progressiveness. Pull the other one! There’s always going to be a version of a narrative, and I think I just decided I wasn’t going to spend the time trying to correct it or redirect it in some way.’ We’d all move on. For Harry to act as if it’s a fun little part of his life that he might tap into one day when he pleases deeply undermines those who have struggled to accept their sexuality The bizarre thing is that Harry spends more time pretending to be gay than I do talking about actually being gay – and it’s becoming tiresome and borderline offensive. However, I’m becoming increasingly uncomfortable with his constant and insincere attempts to insert himself in the so-called LGBT+ community with incessant references to the ‘journey’ of his sexuality, which actually involves dating a parade of beautiful women and no men.

Then I listened to "Harry's House" the whole way home. "This show is in 360 degrees, we're in the round," he told the crowd.
