But Diego Simeone’s Atletico have the experience and collective intelligence to finish on top - the battle for second will be enticing. War-affected Shakhtar will be hoping to finish above Dinamo and secure themselves a Europa League spot. And with six British teams entering this year, the chances of having two in the same group are higher than usual.

Before the draw the 32 teams will be placed in one of four pots, and each group will be drawn with one team from each pot. Group winners and runner's up progress to the Round of 16. The other pots are determined by UEFA Club Coefficient rankings. That means they will not face any of Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Porto or Ajax. BT Sport will broadcast the draw on TV and on their YouTube channel. [City](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/manchester-city-fc) suffered a gut-wrenching semi-final exit in a thrilling tie with Real Madrid, losing 6-5 on aggregate despite winning the first leg 4-3 at the Etihad Stadium.

Best and worst-case scenarios for the British teams in the ... (Daily Mail)

As Premier League champions, Manchester City are in Pot 1 and therefore avoid many of Europe's biggest teams such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and PSG. But ...

Sporting Lisbon from Pot 3 would complete a group that would be the easiest to get out of. Spurs themselves will want Eintracht Frankfurt from Pot 1, but may also fancy a first meeting with Ajax since their dramatic Champions League semi-final against Dutch side in 2019. Celtic earned an automatic spot as domestic champions and Rangers progressed past Union Saint-Gilloise and PSV in the qualifying rounds. Former Tottenham prospect Marcus Edwards now plays for Sporting but is unlikely to cause Antonio Conte's side too many problems if they are pulled out from Pot 3. They also have a point to prove after being knocked out of the Champions League group stages last season. Jurgen Klopp's former charges Dortmund are one to avoid in Pot 3, along with an Inter Milan side who won at Anfield last season. City will fancy their chances against any team in Pot 4, although Marseille are perhaps the most challenging opponent. The Reds have failed to win any of their last seven games against Los Blancos, so will not be too keen on facing them again. A short trip to Lisbon or Leverkusen would suit the Blues fine. As always, the clubs will be split into four pots of eight and one team from each pot will go into groups labelled A to H. Pots 2, 3 and 4 contain the remaining teams, ranked by order of their UEFA ranking. but it's not plain sailing for Man City in Pot 1 either

Champions League draw comes as Super League court case hangs ... (The Independent)

European football is more imbalanced and fractured than ever as the giants of the game meet in Istanbul for the group stage draw.

The first is that the court takes a purely political interpretation and judges that a Uefa “monopoly” is justified. The second is the complete opposite, and Uefa is broken up. It is why the Super League’s next step is to try to seduce these mid-tier clubs. It is clubs such as Juve and the Clasico two that bullied Uefa into this position in the first place, always dangling the Super League, only now to point out the flaws in a landscape they shaped more than anyone. A widespread opinion in football’s legal circles is that Uefa displays “poor governance” and a lack of foresight. For all that the governing body has made “populist” arguments about the ills of the Super League amid widespread state backing, the case is solely about whether Uefa represents a monopoly in competition formation. That feeds into a growing dissatisfaction with Aleksander Ceferin from across the game, and that isn’t just from the Super League forces. Is Uefa really fit for purpose if it has allowed so much of football’s wealth to have accumulated in so few areas? That is because of a discussion that is now beyond old-fashioned, which is that the competition’s group stage is boring and predictable. That’s lobbying for the interests of the biggest clubs, which have historically involved arguing for a greater share of revenue and against more redistribution – although there is now pushback from a rump of smaller clubs in the organisation to change funding. Those countries’ specific issues are also connected to the fact that PSG and Bayern are now the two leading forces in the European Club Association. So that would be two micro-nations and four small leagues, with two of them having undergone the ructions of post-communism.

Premier League's elite find out their Champions League fate today ... (The Sun)

PREMIER LEAGUE clubs have never seen a season like it.And Thursday's Champions League group-stage draw in Istanbul will only bring home to fans just h.

It is probably a good job Prem sides cannot meet a home rival until the last eight in the spring. But for Guardiola, that lack of a Champions League crown on the Etihad sideboard is more than an itch for the Spaniard to scratch - it is a gaping wound. [Liverpool](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/team/1196659/liverpool/), City and Spurs there will, rightly, be little sympathy - only expectations. [Chelsea](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/team/1196660/chelsea/) - there will be 12 Big Six Prem clashes. 2021-22 saw the Bhoys take part in three different European competitions. They caused a scare for Bayern Munich in their last 16 tie, after they drew the first leg 1-1. They did claim a creditable 0-0 draw in the return leg at the Etihad but the damage had already been done. They then lost two of the their last three to end up in the familiar surrounds of the Europa League. The prodigal son is back from a torrid time in the Premier League and will hope to remind everyone of his class. Will he be the catalyst to restore past glories to Juve? That has also translated into the disappointing Champions League performances since they were runners-up in 2017. Ultimately, a lapse by Trent Alexander-Arnold allowed Vinicius to score the winner. Having won the first leg 1-0 thanks to Mbappe's stoppage time goal, they added to their advantage in the Bernabeu. Their return to the top European competition is long overdue. However, they always seem to achieve it and be competitive. The Germans enter the top seeds by virtue of winning last season's UEFA Europa League.

Should Dortmund land Dest from Barcelona, as has been rumored this week, that would take Barça out of the running here and make a Chelsea/Juventus-Dortmund-Rangers trio in any group even more of a lure from a U.S. So any combination that features one of Chelsea, Barcelona and Juventus out of Pot 2 and then Dortmund and Rangers will surely catch the eye of USMNT staff, players and supporters alike in the coming weeks (since Frankfurt and Dortmund can’t be drawn together given they are both Bundesliga clubs, there’s no scenario in which all four clubs in a group features U.S. Sadio Mané has gotten off to a brilliant start with Bayern Munich, and two of his former clubs are involved in the competition. With Russian clubs barred from competition due to its nation’s invasion of Ukraine, the past stipulation that kept Russian clubs and Ukrainian clubs apart in the group stage is no longer in play. A Bayern-Liverpool-Inter/Napoli-Marseille group also offers a similar effect—four clubs in Europe’s top five leagues all with the talent to reach the knockout stage. The remaining pots are set in club coefficient order (a formula that takes into account the results of each club in UEFA competitions based on performances over the last five seasons), which limits the potential for true groups of death but does offer some intriguing possibilities.

Who can Chelsea get in the Champions League draw? (Chelsea FC)

We take a closer look at the teams Chelsea could be drawn against in this evening's Champions League draw in Turkey…

The draw begins at 5pm (UK time) today and will be shown live on BT Sport and via a stream on UEFA’s website. All six group fixtures will be played over an eight-week period this autumn due to the mid-season scheduling of the FIFA World Cup. That is usually only required for teams who have not been regular participants in European competition in recent years. Clubs earn points towards their coefficient based on how well they perform in the Champions League, Europa League and, from last season, the UEFA Conference League. For example, in the Champions League, clubs are awarded four points each for reaching the group stage and last 16, as well as two points for a win and one for a draw in the knockout stages. Pots 2, 3 and 4 are seeded based on individual teams’ standings within the UEFA club coefficient standing.

Champions League group stage draw: Pot 2 (UEFA.com)

Last season's runners-up Liverpool are alongside Chelsea, Barcelona, Juventus, Atlético, Sevilla, Leipzig and Tottenham in Pot 2 for the 25 August draw.

There were some inconsistent results initially as the team adapted to the new man in charge, including defeats by Mura and Rennes in the Europa Conference League as Tottenham's continental campaign ended at the group stage. More success appeared likely as they reached the Champions League knockout stage with ease thanks to five Group H victories, but a surprise last-16 defeat by dark horses Villarreal brought their European journey to an unexpectedly early end. 2021/22: Last term was undoubtedly a frustrating one for the Blaugrana given their success in recent years. 2021/22: The 2020/21 winners eased into the Champions League knockout rounds with four wins and a draw in Group H, and earned a 4-1 aggregate success over LOSC Lille in the last 16 as their tilt at defending their crown gathered steam.
