Farewell Scott Mills: the Cristiano Ronaldo of pop radio (The Guardian)

After 24 years of endless creativity, the BBC Radio 1 DJ's final show on the flagship station airs today. He changed the face of the station as we know it ...

Or, as he put it, “accepted as a normal bloke who is gay and is on the radio”. Unusually for a DJ, he is a great listener – immediately picking up on what his team or listeners are saying with a quick remark or a sharp question. [We wrote that](https://www.theguardian.com/media/2001/apr/07/uknews1) it was “better to manage it than be forced by tabloid hounding” and Mills suggested “the climate has changed, even in the past five years” so he felt listeners wouldn’t be too fazed, but promised not to be too noisy about his sexuality by wearing “pink shirts”. The show they created together is an endless well of creativity in a genre of entertainment that is known for lack of imagination (how many shows on the air basically boil down to a pop quiz, guess the year or requests?). Stark couldn’t be more different from Mills – a jack-the-lad who loved UK garage nights, most of whose family were in the army. But all those hosts hogged the limelight, using a supporting cast of sidekicks mostly to reinforce that they were the star of the show.

I’ve known Roman a long time and often joked over a beer it’d be great to work together on something big one day – and now here we are.’ ‘I really cannot believe I’m going to be calling Radio 2 my new home! Scott said: ‘I have had to do a lot of deep breaths today, even the sky is crying. You are an amazing husband and daddy, we couldn’t be prouder of you.’ I’m beyond excited to be joining the team and working alongside my radio idols and friends at the legendary Wogan House,’ Scott said of his new job. Scott also reflected on how much his time at Radio 1 has meant to him, describing it as a ‘dream job’, and recalling how he called his mum the moment he found out he’d got the gig.

"The various teams I’ve been lucky enough to work with over 24 years work HARD. "We also did similar events before the Big Weekends began in 2003, called One Big Sunday," he said. After hearing the messages, Scott said: "I have had to do a lot of deep breaths today, even the sky is crying. And they deserve as much (I actually think more) credit than me. "But behind the scenes there are so many immensely talented and creative people who love radio as much as I do. That is the radio I’ve always wanted to create," he said. When Chris' daughter appeared to say goodbye, Encanto's We Don't Talk About Bruno played. It’s personal. I love you both," he said. "Hello Scott, hello Chris, it's Lewis Capaldi here. Who is replacing Scott Mills and Chris Stark on BBC Radio 1 and ... (Birmingham Live)

Scott and Chris will present their final BBC Radio 1 show on Thursday (August 25) afternoon - but who is taking over?

They’re a testament to the success of our Christmas Takeover initiative and I’m thrilled it will enable them to bring a smile to the nation on daytime. I feel extremely honoured to be in this position, Scott and Chris are the best that radio has to offer, a phenomenal team that have kept me laughing and smiling over the years and it’s a privilege to follow after them.” Scott Mills and Chris Stark's afternoon slot on BBC Radio 1 will be filled by Dean McCullough and Vicky Hawkesworth. I’m really going to miss them on Radio 1 and hope that their brilliant listeners join us for this new chapter in September. It is also a very special moment for Radio 1 as it means we’ll be broadcasting from Salford seven days a week which is great.” Northern Ireland’s Dean joined Radio 1 on a permanent basis last September to become one of the weekend presenters. Scott will be making the move to Radio 2, where he will replace Steve Wright on the equivalent weekday afternoon show. I am quite literally about to live my dream and I can’t wait to get going. I’m so grateful that this is happening, thank you Radio 1 for believing in me." Chris also has a number of podcasting projects in the pipeline, including That Peter Crouch Podcast for the Speaking ahead of his debut, Dean said: “I literally don’t know what to say, this is wild. The duo's final show will air on Thursday (August 25) from 1pm.

And while he may no longer be a Hampshire resident, the county is behind him in wishing him the best in his new show, which he is more than likely to excel at. The presenter shared on his social media a variety of photos of the team who have helped him make his radio show what it is today. To all of the truly brilliant people who have worked on this show over the last 24 years, Thankyou SO much. With his voice being one that Radio 1 listeners are familiar listening to, fans of the presenter will be disappointed as soon his iconic radio show will be no more, with the famous face moving along to Radio 2 instead. A lot of people have said this is why they always wanted to work on our show, and (hopefully) loved it when they did. The presenter continued: " If you were to walk through our studio anytime over the last 24 years I would hope you feel a positive vibe, with people smiling and laughing, saying yes instead of no, little if any conflict, with amazing team spirit.

Radio 1 presenter Scott Mills and Chris Stark got emotional towards the end of their last-ever show on the station.

And the truth is everything we've meant to you, you've meant to me." I'm so proud of you in so many ways that people know in so many ways that people won't know," he began. I love you mate." And that was the plan. "It's all there this show is, I would like to think, one of the best shows it's ever been on radio and we're proud enough to say that. But I'd like to think we did it right. We didn't want to leave anything behind. It's been more than half my life sitting here talking to you," Scott said. He explained how he did nearly 6,000 shows across early breakfast drive time, afternoons, and more. "It's the last show and I know so many millions of people are listening to this right now so just feels like if I can shout out certain people this is the moment to do it, but I just want to quickly shout my family who've always supported me," he said with a shaky voice. "...And over the last month, people have sent immensely kind messages about what the show has meant to them. "And in that time, I've publicly come out and I met some my best friends like the ones sitting opposite me and had breakups and found love and lost it again sometimes, and said hello and goodbye to family and every low this show has got me through and every high I've been lucky enough to celebrate has been here

A BBC spokesperson said: 'It was Paul's decision to leave his Sunday afternoon show on Radio 2. It has been an honour to share the early hours with you.'
