Tony Mowbray might not be the glamorous choice as Sunderland ... (Roker Report)

The former Hibernian, West Brom and Blackburn boss looks set to take over at the Stadium of Light following Alex Neil's departure.

The top and bottom of this situation is that Sunderland simply must be playing Championship football at the bare minimum in 2023/2024. Neil arrived after a public and ultimately-doomed flirtation with Roy Keane, and was not universally acclaimed, but ultimately succeeded in his brief. One thing that is absolutely clear is that the mistakes of January’s managerial search cannot be repeated. At the time, we were riding a wave of momentum, but this was another big test, and one we needed to pass. In addition, he worked with head of recruitment Stuart Harvey, and also coached potential new signing Jean Paul van Hecke (Rovers’ player of the season in 2021/2022), as well as current Sunderland skipper Corry Evans. In the aftermath of a defeat that dented Albion’s promotion hopes, their boss famously uncorked his frustration in his post-match interview.

Tony Mowbray looks certain to be confirmed as Sunderland manager after Alex Neil's shock departure.

It would be remiss of me to start delving into that when the process is still on-going in terms of getting to a conclusion. "We will be able to be really really clear about our approach at the present and then be really really clear about how our processes work and what the process was." The former Middlesbrough and Blackburn boss is believed to be Sunderland’s first choice for the Stadium of Light hot seat after Neil quit to take over at Championship rivals Stoke City.

Sunderland started the post-Neil era with a 1-0 defeat against Norwich City this lunchtime, with assistant head coach Martin Canning overseeing the team but he is expected to leave to join Neil at Stoke. Mowbray began his managerial career as caretaker boss at Ipswich Town, and later had spells in charge of Hibernian, West Bromwich Albion, Middlesbrough, and Coventry City, before taking over at Blackburn in 2017. Mowbray may ultimately be installed as Neil's successor but ChronicleLive understands that, as yet, nothing has been agreed between Sunderland and the former Middlesbrough defender. Former Blackburn coach to replace Alex Neil who is on the verge of moving to Stoke.

"It was hard work getting to grips with Sunderland but the subs changed things and we showed a little bit of quality with the goal." "It's frustrating because on another day we score two or three goals," Corry Evans, the Sunderland skipper, said. On yesterday's news, naturally for us wanting to retain that coach we've made a further move to offer another set of terms but unfortunately it doesn't appear that's going to be enough for him to stay. Neil is set to be named as the manager of Stoke City after saying his goodbyes to the squad on Friday. We had a really well-structured contract from when we moved into the Championship with the appropriate uplifts. The Wearsiders have moved quickly to replace Alex Neil with the well-respected 58-year-old, who left Blackburn Rovers in May.

Whoever the new man in charge is, it’s going to be a difficult job to replicate what Neil did for Sunderland in such a short period of time, only losing two league matches during his stint in the North East. Manning led MK Dons to third position in League One last season, before losing out in the play-off semi-finals to Wycombe Wanderers, whilst 36-year-old Barry, who is a former EFL and National League midfielder for the likes of Yeovil, Fleetwood and Wrexham, is also being considered.
