Omid arrives at Hector's house after he promises to help with his situation, but Hector spikes his drink and starts making unwelcome advances – after telling Omid a story from his childhood. Later, Lizzie goes back to DS Lloyd and informs her about Omid – who won't speak to the police himself for fear of his permanent residence application being quashed. Although the secret room is now empty and Hector claims it is simply a panic room, DS Ella Lloyd (Franc Ashman) is unconvinced and arrests him (although he is later released when he calls up his friend and squash partner Superintendent William Roy.) [Netflix](http://www.radiotimes.com/netflix) from Wednesday 31st August 2022. Unsurprisingly, this revelation causes Omid to panic and he climbs out the window when Hector isn't looking. After a huge row with his mum, Toby decides to go back to Hector's house and break in again – and here's where things take a big turn. Naturally, Lizzie becomes worried when Toby doesn't return home for several days, and together with Jay she tries to get to the bottom of where her son has gone. I Came By movie review & film summary (2022) | Roger Ebert (Roger Ebert)

There are some fun performances and clever themes in I Came By, two things that elevate it above a lot of the product coming out of the Netflix Thriller ...

“I Came By” is undeniably well-composed and entertaining enough for its missteps to be overlooked most of the time. “I Came By” shifts protagonists here to Toby’s mother (Kelly Macdonald), who grows increasingly concerned that her 23-year-old son has disappeared off the face of the earth. There’s an element of “I Came By” that isn’t so much about what happens behind closed doors as it is about how often powerful people can get away with murder in plain sight. This leads him to the home of a former judge named Hector Blake ( With his buddy Jay ( [Percelle Ascott](/cast-and-crew/percelle-ascott)), Toby breaks into expensive homes and tags a wall with the phrase “I Came By.” Why? [Babak Anvari](/cast-and-crew/babak-anvari)’s “I Came By,” a mostly effective potboiler that has the opposite problem of so many mini-series on the streaming service in that it has a TV season worth of ideas crammed into its runtime.

It seems Hector wasted no time in continuing his dark hobby after his move, but this time, Jay is able to free the new prisoner. Luckily for Jay, his ex Naz (Varada Sethu) is having her dissertation read by Hector as a favour from her professor, who went to school with Hector. One summer, Hector attacked Ravi like a "savage beast" to the extent he thought he'd killed him. But why is Hector going after immigrants despite the fact he used to help them in his career? Hector tells him that their family used to have a young Parsi helper called Ravi who his father took under his wing. Worried about Toby's absence, Lizzie starts to investigate Hector and eventually sees Hector spending the evening with young Iranian masseur Omid (Yazdan Qafouri). Hector's mother took her own life after being "banished to the guest room", with Hector discovering her body. Hector returns mid-rescue and Toby's attempt to attack Hector ends up with him slipping on the floor. It turns out that Hector has a young man held captive in his secret room and Toby tries to help him escape. The first time that Toby breaks into Hector's home, he sees some compromising photos of a beaten-up young man and wrist ties in the basement. The new thriller sees [Hugh Bonneville](https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/a40940484/hugh-bonneville-i-came-by-netflix/) play Sir Hector Blake, a retired judge with a sinister secret. With a couple of major twists along the way, I Came By builds to a dramatic climax that could leave you wondering about one notable aspect.

He then plants it in Toby’s secret cabinet and nudges Lizzie to make the connection between Toby and Hector and report it to the police. However, he overpowers her and takes her to the basement. Netflix's new movie I Came By features Bake Off and Rick & Morty appearances, and they're more important than you might think.

I'm sort of more Family Guy, that's more my level," he told Digital Spy. "Rick and Morty, that specific episode, I'm so obsessed with that episode. Again, though, the choice of episode was important for Anvari. "It's funny because I used to watch Bake Off with my ex. Because of the themes in that episode because it overlaps with the themes that we explore in this film, so I was so happy that we managed to get that," Anvari noted. "I'm a little tamer than that.

I Came By (2022) – Review | Netflix Thriller | Heaven of Horror (Heaven of Horror)

I CAME BY on Netflix is a new thriller from the award-winning writer and director Babak Anvari. This one has many surprises. Full Review >

As his best friend, we see Percelle Ascott ( [The Innocents](https://www.heavenofhorror.com/reviews/the-innocents-netflix/)) who plays a huge part in his life. For a while, I Came By is mostly a visually stunning drama and social commentary with something sinister lurking in the background. [Under the Shadow](https://www.heavenofhorror.com/reviews/under-the-shadow-horror-movie/)). There is especially one moment in a scene with Hugh Bonneville that shook me to my core. A rebellious young graffiti artist targets the homes of London’s wealthy elite. [Marrowbone](https://www.heavenofhorror.com/reviews/marrowbone-2018/) when I see him on screen in these thriller or horror movies. Having the charming and kind-looking Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey, Paddington) play the role of a former judge, who is now accused of terrible things, is perfect. It will shock and surprise you again and again. Also, he did co-write the story for this one with Namsi Khan who only had TV series writing credits prior to this feature film. Especially due to the one constant which is a source of pure dread and terror. You’ll want to avoid all spoilers and just check it out for yourself as soon as you can. The focus simply switches from one to the next and it works remarkably well.

Would you like to see a sequel to I Came By? A sequel could see Jay on the run with Naz trying to escape from Detective Ella, who wants to bring him in for questioning. At the time of writing, there is no news of a sequel to I Came By. Not only that, but the cast would need to find time in their busy schedules to take on this project too. Hugh Bonneville’s character is a massive part of this universe though and he has a pretty packed scheduled, with the prolific actor at various stages for 4 separate movie projects. However, should Netflix decide to renew this one, it’s fair to say story, production and filming would all need to be commenced and booked in before we even look at a specific time for a sequel.

I Came By review: Is Downton Abbey and Line of Duty stars' Netflix ... (digitalspy.com)

I Came By, starring Downton Abbey's Hugh Bonneville and Line of Duty's Kelly Macdonald, is now available to watch on Netflix, but is the thriller any good?

The same could be said when it comes to the central idea of two graffiti artists breaking into homes to tag them. For all of I Came By's effective thriller elements that the movie ends up taking on more than it can chew. George MacKay's Toby ends up being too brash to be a totally likeable hero, but Percelle Ascott's Jay and Kelly Macdonald's Lizzie (mum to Toby) are more empathetic and relatable. With some pitch-black humour (including an unforgettable moment with a slippery floor), the filmmaker plays with your expectations to keep you on edge. It's the only way they know to hit back at the establishment, but when Toby goes it alone to break into the home of retired judge Sir Hector Blake ( You see, the judge known as "St Blake" is hiding a very sinister secret in his basement and Toby thinks he can do something about it.

I Came By: Netflix Horror's Ending Offers a Glimmer of Hope (Den of Geek)

Netflix's social thriller I Came By carries a bleak message, but the ending gives us hope, and that's important.

His last victim is alive, the evidence is overwhelming and Blake will finally go down. Our protagonist is killed in the first half of the movie (we don’t know this for sure until a bit later), his body is cremated and flushed down the toilet. With his basement shenanigans compromised, Blake has packed up and moved house, leaving no obvious evidence pointing to what happened to Liz. His mother can’t get justice despite mounting evidence that Blake is the one who has (or at least knows the whereabouts of) her son. His commitment has to be to his family. As with her son, when Liz attempts to help, Blake kills both her and Omid. It’s not clear if he’s had victims before the man that Toby finds, but it would appear that Blake’s MO is to capture and keep a prisoner to torture (and god knows what else, but there are very clear sexual undertones here – Bonneville playing against type is leeringly creepy, softly spoken and proper in a way that makes your skin crawl). Blake’s colonialist father (Toby references this earlier in the movie) hired a young Parsi man called Ravi as a ‘helper’ who he eventually took under his wing and then into his bed, usurping his wife and son, who he abandoned, eventually leading to his mother’s suicide – Blake was the first to find his dead mum. Omid wont go to the police because of his fear of how that will affect his application. When Toby breaks into Blake’s house he sees the guy beaten and half naked, and returns with the hope of rescuing him. He is the public face of fairness and equality for all. Possibly because of his memories of Ravi and his terrible racist father.
